The Stripper (1963) is a drama film about a struggling, aging actress turned stripper
and the people she knows, played by Joanne Woodward. It is based on the play A Loss of
Roses by William Inge. This was the feature film debut of director Franklin J. Schaffner, and
co-starred Carol Lynley, Robert Webber, and Richard Beymer. Also appearing as Madame Olga
was real-life stripper Gypsy Rose Lee. It was the first Schaffner film to feature a score by prolific
composer Jerry Goldsmith, who would later work with Schaffner on such films as Planet
of the Apes, Patton, Papillon, and The Boys from Brazil.
The Travel(l)ing Executioner is a 1970 American film starring Stacy Keach, Bud Cort, Stefan
Gierasch and Marianna Hill and directed by Jack Smight. Jonas Candide, a former carnival showman,
travels around the South in 1918 with his own portable electric chair, going from prison to prison
with his young assistant, Jimmy, charging one hundred dollars per execution. Two of Jonas'
potential victims are siblings Willy and Gundred Herzallerliebst. While Jonas successfully executes
Willy, he falls for Gundred, hoping to fake her execution. The musical The Fields of Ambrosia is
based on the film.
