Highly recommended. One of the greatest arranged videogame collections in history, no kidding.
Despite only coming on a single CD (most Perfect Collections consist of two - one Special Arrange and another with various music styles), Ys IV Perfect Collection Vol. 1 delivers big-time...I can't call it my favorite of the trilogy: Instead, it'll just have to settle for being my third favorite arranged album of all-time, behind the other two volumes.
Even though I'd never heard the redbook audio from Ys IV, I didn't need to in order to fully appreciate this album. The first five tracks are wonderful versions of previously used songs in the series.
Of course, this is Ys IV - and being so we are treated to the obligatory (and excellent) megamix. What we've come to expect is a non-stop powered up medley of familiar themes from the album. This particular mix is no different. Not as fun as Volume 1's mix nor as jaw-dropping as 3's, but equally interesting in it's own sonically darker way.
Ryo Yonemitsu is a master at arranging, and he demonstrates his talents sufficiently here. Taking the original compositions, he incorporates different instruments and styles masterfully, raising the music to a whole new level. Combined with the excellent sound quality (which really makes the album), he is able bring out the heart of these pieces. Of all the arranged albums out there both old and new, the sound quality on this CD has to be one of the best. With crisp, clear synths, you'd be hard-pressed to find better samples.

In a way, this trilogy of the Ys IV Perfect Collections makes me a little sad. These were Ryo Yonemitsu's last Falcom arrangements and they were the last ones to have the Perfect Collection name...While the Ys IV Perfect Collection trilogy should have been the "Dawn of Ys", they were more of a sunset for Falcom. As such, if you can find these, try to enjoy them with the thought that they are the pinnacle of the "Falcom Sound".
At the time of writing, this was true...however, the recent Falcom renaissance has seen a fantastic growth in interest and they've found a foothold with Kiseki.
I'm probably super biased but whatever. I fucking love this trilogy of Perfect Collection arrangements.
