This game.
Is GENIUS.
I seriously can't think of a game that has challenged me this much for a long time, and yet kept me interested and loving it, even though my ass is raped by each beat. I've reached the 8th stage, and I'm kinda sorta stuck. Well, not so much stuck, but I'm still working up my technique.
The story is fun too. The characters are hilarious, from the amazingly camp Gregorio the 3rd, to the guards, to the Woofer-mazing robot you have to fight.
The style of the game is really hard to describe. It's partly done with the guitar, where you curve the analog stick to meet the guitar riffs, and then there's the DDR-ish defense section where you tap out the buttons in order to block attacks. This at first seems easy, but come the third level, soon enters a new level of pain. When I say you tap out your defense, I mean you have to tap out to the exact beat - and I mean exact exact. As in, the beginning of the sambone trio level will have you (eventually, after losing a few times) tapping out a constant beat perfectly, or you lose. While this can be frustrating, it's also really, really rewarding when you get it right.
The genre of music changes each level - from soft rock, to techno, to jazz, to drum and bass, to reggae, to acoustic, to samba-meets-mexican-acoustic, to (as far as I've got) orchestral prog-rock stylings. Some of the opening sections to certain levels are really, really cool. Like when you have to dodge the evil maraca-music of the sambone trio, until you trick them into freeing your dog. Who's also your amp.
Yeah. That sorta game.
I'm a music purist, and a general nazi on this sort of genre, but I really, really, really enjoy this game. It's a challenge.
For those of you interested in the UK/Europe, you can find it for sale at amazon (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000065U8W/ref=sr_aps_videogames_1_1/026-6649498-7523669) for 20. I like it more than I like disgaea, mostly because disgaea is so stupidly unhelpful.
So, in other words, really, do not pick this up unless you think you want a challenge. It isn't an easy game, nor does it have any easy level bar the first one or maybe two - this isn't samba de amigo, nor is it donkey konga in the ease of it. The tunes are stupidly catchy though. Download Born to be Bone and Tainted Lovers to get a taste of the 7th and 8th levels.
Finally, don't even think about it unless you have a sense of rhythm. I'm not being condescending. I'm saying you will reach the 7th level and burst into tears.
