Radio dramatizations of the Star Wars trilogy.
Thread closed.
Notice: as pjmontana observed, the files of the first archive, corresponding to "A New Hope" lacked the Stereo sound of the other two episodes. You can't download that 128 kbps set anymore but a high quality MP3 and FLAC version of a complete 15 CDs set is available in
Thread 139214
Produced by National Public Radio, these serials were made with the full co-operation of George Lucas, who for one dollar each sold the rights to KUSC-FM, the public radio affiliate at his alma mater, the University of Southern California. Lucas also allowed the use of original sound effects and music from the films.
Many of the actors involved in the movie were unavailable to reprise their roles (Harrison Ford, for instance, was committed to the first Indiana Jones movie), but Mark Hamill and Anthony Daniels returned to reprise Luke Skywalker and C-3PO respectively.
When this series was first broadcast on National Public Radio in 1981, it generated the largest response in the network's history: 50,000 letters and phone calls in a single week, an audience of 750,000 per episode, and a subsequent 40-percent jump in NPR listenership.
Amazon.com review:
At first glance, it seems difficult to imagine Star Wars presented as a radio serial. Wouldn't the story be weakened by the loss of visuals? This remarkable production, broadcast on National Public Radio in 1981, proves that sounds convey pictures quite well on their own. John Williams's original score and sound effects from the film add drama and depth to the story, and the characters are brought to life by a talented cast including Mark Hamill and Anthony Daniels reprising their roles as Luke Skywalker and C-3PO. Though Brock Peters's Darth Vader is a bit of a disappointment (James Earl Jones left some pretty big boots to fill), Perry King does a fine turn as Han Solo, and Ann Sachs makes a believable Princess Leia. The story itself has been greatly expanded, and listeners are treated to several new scenes, including conversations between Princess Leia and her father on Alderaan and Biggs Darklighter's confession to Luke that he had decided to join the Rebel Alliance after leaving the Imperial Space Academy. Presented in 13 episodes, this excellent radio drama is enjoyable even for those whom audiobooks usually leave cold. As series director John Madden noted during the production, "You may think you've seen the movie; wait till you hear it." (Running time: 6 hours, 6 cassettes) --C.B. Delaney

As I didn't actually listen to the tracks (need improved skills for that), I can't tell much about them, nor whether they are all correct. But in case any file had a problem, some of you could provide a new copy for us. So, don't lose sight of those venerable cassettes. :)
Sometimes I remember the sound quality of cassette tapes... the cleaning of the magnetic heads with alcohol, the astounding gain in quality afterwards... and then I see myself nowadays rejecting often "not-100%-perfect" tracks whose clean sound would have brought tears to my eyes back then. And I reject them because of differences in the sound that I would never be able to tell by listening, even if my life was at stake. I can't help laughing at that, honestly.
In relation to this, I've just realized that track #04 of the third set has one sample clipped. Just one; the other 44099 during that second of time are rightly below maximum. Normally I would have lowered the volume of the whole album (mp3 allows you to do that and "recover" the peaks lost because excessive gain) or renamed the clipped file, in the case of flac; but in this case, as an homage to the good old analogic technology, I'll let it be. Amplitude doesn't matter so much.
Now, to the third upload.

I wasn't aware of the different edits. The review of amazon mentions the cassetes, although that's something I copied just for info; it didn't came along with the files.
If you know for sure this version is the edited one, I'll add a remark about it. Can anybody confirm it?

I'm glad you all found it. For me to enjoy it, I would need the transcriptions, and while looking for them I saw there are some torrents of these radio dramas with 40% bigger file sizes (being the whole set more than 1 GiB), which indicates they are encoded at 192 kbps. Some of you may want to check that, for example in kickass.to

@lindaxak and cassette owners:
If these mp3 @128 kbps are correct and the same thing as in the cassettes, I think there's no big need of a cassette rip for the moment, moreover if I am able to offer you what follows below. Though, possibly some of us would like having scans or photos of them (inserts, cassette and cases). You may even go creative, compositing them with an 80's background, shooting them against it or including yourself dressed in bell-bottoms. For our friend Soundtracker2010 I envisioned an image of the cases from below, falling on a waterfall towards the viewer's point of view.
@atomicmaniac:
Yes, that's what I intended. ;) The image is from the first CD of the Collector's Limited Edition, what The Valeyard mentioned previously. It seems that [at least some of] the previous editions had a few small parts edited out, and the Limited Edition includes them and also some Bonus tracks: comments of actors, advertisements and a message to the ailing Brian Dailey from the staff.
The thing "is moving" because a very kind user who got that through a torrent is allowing me to download from him whenever he goes online. This will take days because it is "big": 15 CDs with audio in flac format which mean 4 GiB.
I found, however, some quirks that need to be sort out before going further and claiming I got the Collector's Limited Edition: each disc folder has a scan of the CD that is simpler, different from the CLE beautifully printed ones. Comparing the printed durations reveals that two of them are different by half a minute or so. This would be expected if someone had gotten non-CLE CD scans and had put them there as a substitute. What's weird is that the non-CLE durations are the longer ones!
Good news: just got the individual CD scans of the last episode and they don't show the bonus tracks, while the acompanying .cue files, do. So this is the real thing and those few differences in duration don't matter. See a comparison of both types of CD scans here (

).
I'd like your comments about your preferred format and bitrate. Surely you prefer mp3 to ogg-vorbis for portability reasons (though ogg is superior a low bitrates), but which bitrate? 192 VBR would be OK? 320? Remember, without Bonus tracks, the share of this thread at 128kbps is some 700 MiB, so 320 would mean 2 GiB. Or is there anyone who will stop breathing until having the flac version?

You are welcome, friends.
I compared the sound of the set posted here with that Collector's Edition that is on the way (3of15) and yes, there are two fragments of 23'' that the MP3 version posted above lacks.
In Star Wars (radio) - Wookieepedia, the Star Wars Wiki (
http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Star_Wars_(radio)) we read:
NPR's reruns of the first series had some small timing cuts. Perhaps the most telling of these involves some dialogue in which Leia tells her father about a walk she took in the countryside on Alderaan, which makes the planet's eventual fate seem more of a personal tragedy to her.
That is one of them. The other is from the conversation between Luke and Kenobit in the latter's home. For those curious, I uploaded the fragments here (3.5 MiB) (
http://ulozto.net/xCuDa7Ks/star-wars-radio-dramas-lost-cuts-7z).
I tried also to transcript the dialogues but can't understand some words. Perhaps you can help me? Then enter in the collabedit.com site and just edit the text that you'll find. You can also say hello in the chat they provide. The page for this edit is //Obsolete: transcriptions corrected by Calidoran, in the next page//.
Thank you.

Thank you, Calidoran, and sorry, I wasn't putting attention to the page when you entered. Now it's almost perfect and can be shown here. The only unknown word, marked as @@@, should be a kind of plant, obviously.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Track: 02 - Points Of Origin
23 extra seconds at 12:58. Leia and her father.
After she says "I couldn't come straight on, father. I had some thinking to do."
- Well, how did you get here from the Space Port?
- Walked.
- Walked! ─Laughs.
- I took the old road through the hills.
- The entire way?
- It's only a day's walk. The @@@ are in bloom all through the uplands!
- I... I wish you wouldn't go unescorted like that.
- I needed to.
- You weren't recognized?
- Well... I suppose I was. But at least noone fuzzed over me.
- I can only imagine how pleasant that must have been.
And continues with "And may a father ask why his daughter...".
--------------------------------------------------------------
Track: 05 - Jedi That Was Jedi To Be
23 extra seconds at 13:47. Luke and Ben in his home.
After Ben says "Oh, I quite understand."
- But you shouldn't assume that solitude necessarily begets ignorance, Luke.
- Yeah, right. Boy, it's a... Nice home you've got here. Pretty well hidden, too.
- It has all that I require: shelter and comfort without a lot of clutter. I prefer to live simply and to keep around me only those things I prize highly.
And continues with "That is part of the Jedi's creed."

i've searched and tried to make this complete, but there are alternate openings and closings of certain episodes and also some original director's cuts that i'm missing (not many)
are those included in what you have or in what you're downloading?

I didn't know there were so many differences but they don't seem important if it's just openings and closings, I guess. What I have is just what's posted here; but I saw some Limited Editions with only the first and second episodes (without ROTJ, 12 CDs) and that ones had some extra track that doesn't appear in the 3-episodes version I'm downloading. I think it was something about the actors of the movie and Lucas. I just ignored everything about those. On the other hand, most [or all] of the bonus track of the 3-version didn't appear in the 2-version.
The Bonus tracks I will get are these:

Those two "Director's cut" lines match nicely the fragments I uploaded, don't they?. I would think that the "Director's cut" was a label someone used to express "the pristine episodes, not when we aired commercials halfway and forgot stopping the tape!" (I swear, that's how I visualize it; just notice the duration and position of those missing parts... :D)
Concerning the rest... you've spent some 'minutes' with that, uh? How are the differences of the openings/closings like? Different versions, just shorter... ? Are those tracks cut by you or you found them that way? I would be interested in all that once you have completed it.
By the way... how do one tell if one opening is alternate or not? Should I assume that the ones posted at the top of this thread are the "normal" ones?

kooke, first I want to thank you for posting this wonderful Star Wars radio series to the forum and for all the detailed work you and Calidoran have done so far. But I did want to point out that your first post (306.8 MB) which includes the first episode A NEW HOPE in 13 parts, contains MP3 audio files that are in MONO instead of the original STEREO which the series was broadcast in and also sold as cassettes and CDs. Hopefully someone here at the forum will be able to upload the 13 part episode A NEW HOPE in glorious STEREO in the near future. Thanks again for all your hard work.

Those alternate openings/closings are just different introductions by the narrator, differently presented. They don't add anything storywise. However, the original director's cuts do, so it would be interesting to have at least those (missing one).
The big question is: Completionist or not? :-P I CAN live without the different openings/endings, but it would nice to have it all just the same ;)

Then it sounds interesting, Calidoran; I had thought just about trimmed versions. And those Bonus look interesting, particularly the Making-of. Well check it when you finish. :)
@pjmontana: thank you very much for pointing that out. I've done a quick check with a couple of programs and didn't find anything wrong in the files. Usually I scan/fix the MP3 files with MP3Diags and it shows "MPEG-1 Layer III, Joint stereo, 44100Hz, 128000bps CBR". The stereo mode of encoding the information is Joint-stereo (different from normal stereo in that instead of storing "raw" every channel, they kind of join both, computing the difference between them to save space) but that's very common in MP3 files and the players take care of it without problems. If you import the file into a wave editor, like Audacity, you can see that it has two channels. The archive with the fragments I uploaded earlier contains some screenshots of that: the upper file is the .flac and the lower, the mp3, both showing stereo structure (though in the two detailed views I reduced the height of one of the channels to make the point more clear).
Something that can trouble some players are the ID3 tags, which in these MP3 are the newer 2.4 version instead of the more widespread 2.3 version. If that was the case, you could try using a tag editor (I remember Tag&Rename years ago), converting from v2.4 to v2.3, and checking if that makes the player happy. I could do that for you and upload one of the troublesome files with v2.3 tags and without any tags. Which ones you see as mono?
But maybe you just felt "in your ears" that the sound has poor or null separation ("staging" as taught by SoAd ;) ), like the result of converting a mono soundfile to 2-channels. If that's the case, and since it was not my encoding but files I found somewhere, we may just forget this and you can count on a good stereo encoding from the lossless files I'll have in a few days.

kooke, thank you for your response. I was a little confused with your technical explanations above so I won't comment on them. I listened to sections of all 13 parts of A NEW HOPE (with headphones and through stereo speakers) and the sound is MONO. I have been an audio-video hobbyist for over 40 years and know the difference between MONO and STEREO sound. Your downloads of THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK and RETURN OF THE JEDI are both in beautiful full-range STEREO sound. Hopefully yours and Calidoran's new sources for this material, especially A NEW HOPE, will be in STEREO and can be made available to the forum. I also think 320K MP3 files would be more than sufficient with FLAC probably not being worth it because of the large file size but the sound would be CD-quality with FLAC. Thanks again to you and Calidoran for your insightful work on this project.

I could make whatever is missing here available. The alternate openings/endings are... expendables, so i wouldn't worry about those. But whatever else extra i have is readily available for upload. Be warned though that this is mostly 128 kbps mp3-files.
The files would be:
CD1
Original Director's Cut from Episode Two Leia's Return to Alderaan (3:33)
CD7
'The Making of Star Wars for Radio' (28:01)
A Suite of Additional Music Recorded for "Star Wars: The Radio Drama" (4:57)
A Suite of Additional Music Recorded for "Star Wars: The Radio Drama" (4:57)

"Star Wars" Promotional Spot No. 2 (Ann Sachs) (0:37)
"Star Wars" Promotional Spot No. 3 (Mark Hamill) (1:01)
Still missing this one:
CD3
Original Director's Cut from Episode 5, In Ben's House
The episode-files i have from A New Hope are indeed in stereo. The two channels are definitely not the same when i look at them in Audition. I would however love a flac upload of what you are getting kooke :) but that choice is up to you

@pjmontana:
I rechecked that more calmly and you were indeed right: the first episode, while being in legit stereo files, is spatially dead, and not only by comparison with the other two already shared; when I opened the flac counterparts I've got so far (first episode to be completed in hours), the difference is out-of-this-world. Well spotted.
In relation to the bitrate for the Limited Edition, I suppose that preferring 320 kbps is natural, like in most shares here, despite the sound of this dramas is much simpler than music albums. I'll do that, but was also thinking about doing a very light version that took less space in phones and other devices. We'll see. :)
@Calidoran: as the "Director's cut"s are included in what I'll share, I don't mind there's one missing in your list, and will get those files whenever you upload them. Thank you. And of course, if you are interested in the flacs, I'll be happy to upload them too. No hurries with that, right?
@tuzzati: you are welcome; stay 'tuned'.
@anyone: I'd like to send the files to mega because its web file manager allows you to drop a bunch of them and forget it, being able to resume the upload between broken connections, even on reconnections with the internet provider. The problem is that some Mac users can't access the files there with their browsers, and so I did alternate uploads. I suppose I could suggest them to install the powerful jdownloader, which is multiplataform and works perfecty with mega. Or, if anyone usually reuploads files to his/her own online account elsewhere and is willing to share a link, it would be much appreciated. In the worst case I'd do the alternate upload.

I've uploaded to a separate archive everything non-audio of that Limited Edition for you to check out, and maybe help me solving a puzzle. It contains images of the neat Limited Collector's Edition (
http://tinyurl.com/kymrgd5), of a simpler 15 CD Edition (
http://tinyurl.com/n2bta8l), ripping logs and .cue files, as I got them (the only change, renaming of the three main folders):
Artwork, cue, logs - Star Wars - National Public Radio Dramatizations [Limited Edition, 15 CDs].7z (172.1 MB)
// link deleted, not needed anymore //
This will be included in the flac upload without modification; and also in the mp3 upload, this time with different filenames and folder locations. So, you don't need it now unless you feel curious.
My doubt comes from this:
- The audio files are the version we really want, as proved by the Bonus tracks and the 23'' extended tracks that other versions lack.
- The scans of the Collector's Edition nice CDs don't match the duration of those "23-seconds-extended" tracks: they correspond to the shorter edited versions. But they do list the bonus tracks.
- The scans of that simpler looking Limited Edition CDs, in every folder "cd X", match the extended tracks but don't list any of the bonus tracks.
So, what's the explanation? Maybe none of the scans really belongs to this audio and someone simply added them? The possibility of the ripper having mixed tracks from both editions is mindboggling to me, though it would make this edition the best bootleg of the dramas in the galaxy. If we don't clarify this point, I'd just name it "Limited Edition", without "Collector's", and would include a note.
I made this list to compare durations. From left to right, Collector's ed., "simpler" ed. and the flac files I got so far:

Kooke, thank you so much for the Artwork and all the other hard work you have done on this project. I await with bated breath your upload of the FLAC and or MP3 audio (hopefully with A NEW HOPE in gorgeous STEREO sound) versions of this wonderful radio adaptation of the STAR WARS trilogy and thank you again for all your studied and meticulous labor on this set.

Thanks for your patience, pjmontana. I can assure you that I will share it, and that I've never let down anyone from Montana, as far as I know. But I realize that so much anxiety is not good. Let me try to alleviate it a little with a *very reduced* encoding of the first 7 discs, which correspond to A New Hope.
It's mp3 at half the sample frequency (22050) and less than half the previous bitrate: not even 64 kbps, but 48! Even so, the archive size is 175 Mb for 6 hours of playtime.
I could have tried to convince you that all the stereo is there, but this way you can hear it by yourself. Besides, Calidoran and anyone else can also check out intros, durations or whatever, if the players like the bitrate.
Here it is, with the prescriptive typo (in the frequency):
// deleted, not needed anymore //
In case you wonder how is going my download, at this moment, stopped in the middle of TESB.

@Calidoran: as the "Director's cut"s are included in what I'll share, I don't mind there's one missing in your list, and will get those files whenever you upload them. Thank you. And of course, if you are interested in the flacs, I'll be happy to upload them too. No hurries with that, right?
I'm in absolutely no hurry :) now that i know i can get them in FLAC. It might sound greedy, but as you pointed out, this gives me the opportunity to transcode them to whatever need i might have myself. Thanks again :)

It might sound greedy, but as you pointed out, this gives me the opportunity to transcode them to whatever need i might have myself. Not at all, not greedy. I would have liked having the flac option, and surely the same for some of the silent users, although probably if we did listening tests, most of us wouldn't be able to distinguish easily the flac from, let's say, 160 VBR.

kooke, thank you for the "Preview" packet at 48kbps. Obviously at that bit rate the audio is not first rate with that whooshing sound and other anomalies, but I can confirm that all 13 parts are in magnificent STEREO sound. And I will wait with the "patience of Job" for a FLAC or 320kbps version (now that I have the "preview" back-up in hand) of the series when you find the time to transcode and upload. Again I want to thank you for all your hard work on this project. Also, I find downloading from MEGA no problem as long as I use Google's Chrome browser. And thank you Calidoran for the materials you uploaded especially "The Making Of" special.

Edited the message above with the spoiler of durations of the tracks, now discarding the data of the mp3-128 and showing instead the duration of the flacs already downloaded (nothing new in the last 24 h). I'll be updating that as files arrive.
With regard to the identification of the precise release/package, no advances either. I would like to know it before opening a new thread, because you can't edit the thread's title afterwards, but a generic title would do. Then you have the issue of which images you use embedded. Despite those differences in duration, miniatures of the Collector's Edition CDs will be cool.
I'll fix also some details in the LE artwork, like "eyelash galaxies" and borders. Mmm... pjmontana, you don't need 3D covers, do you? (Just kidding...)
Maybe it would have been better to be quiet and only raise the subject when I had everything; lately the advertisement of the first Star Wars movie comes often to my head:
"A million years in the making and coming to your theater this summer."Best regards to Job.

You are welcome. Updated the list of durations of the spoiler above (

My idea is to send a cool mp3 version with custom tagging, embed artwork, edited CD scans, and things like that, keeping also everything of the original set except the flacs. And would do the opposite for flac: I'd upload the set as I found it, and provide separately an archive with additional files. Any comments on this? The flacs have already ReplayGain information, and the tasks of embedding coverart, making playlists and those things are not difficult... but some may prefer having it alread done.

Warning: as pjmontana observed, the files of the first archive, corresponding to "A New Hope" lack the Stereo sound of the other two episodes. You may still download this if you are curious about it, but a high quality MP3 and FLAC version of the 15 CDs Limited Edition is planned and will be announced here.
Sorry for the inconveniences.
As requested:
Radio dramatizations of the Star Wars trilogy.

(
http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/41/fpa5.jpg/)
Delaney

I went to the mediafire site and you need to register to be able to upload. Unless the files remained undeleted for a longer time there, I'd rather use a service that allows anonymous uploads. I'll investigate more, but as mega is more and more used, anyone having problems with it should try the powerful jdownloader.
Here is a tutorial of installation, from their site:
Tutorial: JDownloader 0.9.581 Installation and First Use - JD Community (
http://board.jdownloader.org/showthread.php?t=34873)
The installer offers a toolbar and an extension for Firefox that are not needed.
Once installed and the clipboard icon active, you just copy any download link normally (control-C or right button menu) and jdownloader detects it and checks whether the file is online. If it is, you press the Play button and after typing the capcha the download usually begins. No need to go to the web page.
You can use it to download or store normal files/links too, and is great to grab videos and mp3 from youtube addresses. It's really worth a try. Let us know if you have any problem.

Yes, thank you, I wasn't sure what people use today.
What I know, after looking at the logs, is that our hero used 2 DVD drives to do the rip, in 3 sessions along 3 days, having finished the first disc of Star Wars (was Disc 2, not 1) on "2. December 2010, 20:23" and the last disc of Return Of The Jedi on "4. December 2010, 8:23". The two DVD drives, HL-DT-STDVD-RAM GSA-H60L and LITE-ON COMBO SOHC-4832K, were used alternatively along those days. I wish this shed any light over whether he mixed tracks from two releases or not, but I only am guessing he's a somewhat methodical and relaxed person. Wherever you may be: you rock.
Got another couple of files from my friend, now offline, and I'm confident the download will complete today.

Ok, download completed here. Still it will take time to organize and upload all (we're talking about 6 GiB and my connection is not specially fast). And some fog seems to be vanishing as one deals with the data:
The alternate introductions and endings mentioned by Calidoran are due to being different performances (not sure if by different narrators). Initially, the voice of the narrator for the first "movie" (A New Hope), was different from the next two, introduced/outtroduced by Ken Hiller, according to wikipedia.
The four fragments you sent me, Calidoran, are Ken Hiller intros/outros made later to replace the first ones, that is, for the episodes corresponding to A New Hope. Such a change makes ~some sense if you are packing the three works altogether and want to hide the inconsistence of different narrators/voices. So we'd have a reworked, special or Limited edition.
What leads us to a fantastic second discovery: that our hero, whom I'll petname HappyRipper, was so bright to do what I've been suspecting: give us the best mix, replacing the first 7 discs of the Collector's Limited Edition with the earlier set that includes the "old" voice and the two 23'' missing cuts. Oh, my, wwwhat a neat move! A few hints in a little .txt file would have saved us troubles but, anyway, to HappyRipper, friendly:
NoW PLaYiNg... :: Joy Enriquez :: * How Can I Not Love You * [Anna And The King [Original Motion Picture Soundtrack] (1999)] [922 kbps]
If that's correct, then we can't label this as Collector's Limited Edition; but it isn't a bootleg either. It would be... just a masterwork. :D

Uploaded the unmodified FLAC version to mega (3.9 GiB in 500 MiB chunks) and the upload of the MP3 (2.1 GiB) should start soon (a few little details remain).
I'll open a new thread for these, trying not to expose the links, but in the mean time anyone eager to have the FLAC version can PM for the links.
Any suggestion about hosting sites is welcome; we need something fast that allows resuming. The maximun file size is also important (right now I couldn't send the 500 MiB files to any service), but I'll do 200 MiB chunks for the MP3 archive.

If I might suggest Uloz.to (

They accept file sizes up to 2GB (I usually keep them to 500MB chunks, though).
Plus, the retention is great - I have files hosted there that are well over a year old and haven't been deleted yet :)

MP3 upload complete, but it contains an error -surely more than one, yep...- in the About.txt file that I don't like, to the point of having decided to replace the whole thing to have that correct. But it's a simple thing, easy to fix, so, whoever wants the links for this, ask by PM and I'll send them with instructions for the correction.

Would the audio book series by uploaded on Here, Too? I really would like to have "Dark Empire", "Dark Empire 2" & "Empire's End". :)

I don't have those, sorry. Also the forum rules state that you should open a separate thread for each different work, to make it easier for users to search. But you may try asking for it in the requests subforum. Nothing to lose.

But.... The Dark Empire audio Book series is done AS a Star wars Radio Drama. With a full cast & everything.

I didn't know about those, and will drop here a line if I ever find them. And you are right: this could be a correct thread for them if they were published between 1981 and 1996 and we had them in MP3 format, to be consistent with the title "Star Wars radio dramatizations (1981-1996) [MP3]".

Wow!! [jawdrop] That's impressive. I had to close it immediately (kidding).
I don't think my friend has any of those; or at least I didn't see them in his files, which were on a few Star Wars folders under one of George Lucas. Do you have any of those? Maybe some folks are interested in them.
