There are several titles I have seen out which I am interested in purchasing. However, being an indecisive sort of guy, I'm not really too sure exactly which one to spend my hard earned student loan on. So, I'm gonna open up the opinions to people here.
The games I have in mind are .hack//infection for the PS2, Arc: Twilight of the Spirits for the PS2, Unlimited Saga for the PS2 and Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter for the PS2.
I'm more interested in the first two than the last two. But I'm willing to listen to opinions. The things I'm looking for are storyline and a decent battle system that won't send me to sleep.

I can recommend both Unlimited Saga and BoF: Dragon Quarter. I have both games and I like them alot. Especially Saga for the different style of the game.

I've played Arc and Dragon Quarter, was interested in .hack but not in SaGa...
So, considering this, I'd recommend Arc.

out of the 4 you mentioned i would go for arc or BoF, then again i haven't actually played the other 2.
if you don't already have it, i would definately recommend dark chronicle-it seems pretty overlookes, in my opinion it is one of the best ps2 rpg's.
P.S.-anyone know when the xenosaga game are released in europe?

Xenosaga doesn't have a firm release date - considering Xenogears was never released over here, I wouldn't hold your breath.
Frankly, i'm surprised we got .hack//infection over here.
Besides, if you want a really good RPG, just get Knights of the Old Republic for the computer, BZ...
BEST RPG EVER.

Unlimited Saga killed me. I'm just a teen with no job! It takes a long time to save 50 dollars! Well I bought it without reading one reveiw because I thought it was be great because it was made by sqenix. Well I played it for ten minutes. I turned it off. I put it on the PS2 stack and wanted to shoot myself for wasting 50 bucks... stupid EB would only take 20 for it back. It their it still sits on my PS2 rack. So... Unlimited Saga is horid. At least the game play. I didn't play it to much though so this is only my optinion, but i enjoy games where you can walk around.

Personally I loved .hack... And I LOVED the gameplay. It was quite addictive to say the least... the only thing is the games are pretty short. As you know their are four .hack games... putting them all together their about the lenght of Final Fantasy X. They could have probably put all the games into 1 or 2 disks, but probably didn't in order to make more money. Although some of the side quests can be pretty deep. The only other thing wrong with it is that by the third one then engine starts to get old... I mean I love it, but i dread going into another dungeon... But I think its a really good series... I never beat it thought because the moment i bought the 4th one, my memory card was stolen.
:-/ That card had all my PS2 RPG files on it...

I know its old and has crappy graphics, but get Xenogears. Simply the best story and characters in any game.

Unlimited SaGa is the worst game I've ever played. Don't get it if someone pays you to take it off their hands.
Arc rocked.
Also, the new Star Ocean looks like it's going to be amazing when it finally does get released.

Ooh Ooh! I've got Star Ocean on pre-order, so nyeh!
That's deffinately one to pick up, or Star Ocean: The Second Story.
Or you could try the Might and Magic series on the comp, I recomend number 7 (stay away from 9 at all costs!). The graphics are very dated, but the gameplay stands the test of time. Might be a tad hard finding these games though.

I ended up buying Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and I must say that I'm addicted.
So it might be a while until I take your recommendations, but thanks for telling me about them. :)

For Unlimited SaGa, I heard it was horrible, and I didn't like Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter much, but that's just me.
The game I recomend is Shadow Hearts, which I think is the best RPG series on PS2 right now (but that's just my opinion). It has a very good story, with good characters (except for the heroine, who is a bit generic) and the battle system is alot more interesting then most RPGs. It uses something called: The Judgement Ring when you fight.
What happens is say you select the basic attack, a ring appears and a bar spins around the circle. There are three areas to hit, if you get all three you'd do 3 attacks, if you miss one, you miss for the whole attack. Same for items or something, there will be one big area to hit, and if you get it, you use the item.
If you want to find out about the story, just google search it or something.... If you were going to buy it, I'd suggest preordering the second game: Shadow Hearts: Covenant, because when you preorder it, you get the first game with it free.
Now here's a picture of the main hero and heroine, Yuri and Alice:
