What is your setup?
Do you prefer headphones w/DAC?
Receiver w/speakers?

Post up what your setup is. Share ideas on creating the best sound for given area/setup.

I run PC to Onkyo TX-SR804 digital coax.
Paired up to the Onkyo is a pair of Bowers & Wilkins 686 Bookshelf speakers.
Not the greatest sound stage. But work with what I have.

I have always preferred speakers over headphones. However a quality set of headphones are awesome also!

old creative 7.1 speakers for me, or sennheiser 280p for more exclusions listening.
i know not enough for more expensive things, or which to get for better performance. most online reviews or recommendings are full with fanboys.

I know it's not much, but it's home.

I have a pair of Energy RC-10 speakers and a S10.3 subwoofer (both discontinued) hooked up to my Denon AVR with Audyssey MultEQ XT. I also have a pair of AKG Q701 hooked up to an inexpensive DAC/amp for night usage. Both sound good and work well.

But a lot of times, I just use my tinny Macbook speakers. They work just as well for delivering enjoyment. :)

Live in a council property with thin walls, so headphones all the way for me, although I do have a pair of cheapy Acoustic Solutions bookshelf speakers for ambient room music when I'm doing something. For main listening, pair of Sennheiser HDR170's (shortly to be upgraded but very good - lossless wireless) fed from an Acoustic Solutions amp. Sounds pretty good but the amp is dying so am shortly to replace it with an all-digital chain.

Additional playback equipment; Rega and Sony turntables, and a Sony pro-grade Cassette deck for transfers and making real old-school mixtapes for my girlfriend. ;)

5x PMC AML2 Active Speakers and Bryston Surround Processor. I used to have an SB100 subwoofer but had to ditch that as the system's in a smaller room. The processor doesn't have an EQ facility but luckily the speakers do.
Roksan Xerxes .20 for Vinyl playback.

I'm currently living in an apartment and can't quite fully enjoy my sound system. But here is what I have.
Receiver:
Denon AVR-3310ci running all 7 channels with Audyssey calibration

Sources:
Sony BDP-470 Blu Ray/SACD player. (Which I scored at the Goodwill for a mere $14.99!!)
Denon DVD-758 DVD/DVD-A/SACD player

Loudspeakers:
Definitive Technology BP-10b's for Front Left and Right
Definitive Technology CLR-2002 for Center Channel
Definitive Technology Studio Monitor 350's at Left Surround, Right Surround, Left Back Surround and Right Back Surround
Definitive Technology PF-15 for the subwoofer

I enjoy listening through headphones and speakers equally.

Hey guys new here, can anyone recommend the AKG550/551's? Someone is selling them locally for fairly cheap but I was wondering if I should hold the cash and add some more later to get better headphones? Right now I use Sony Earphones, which are actually pretty good but lacking in depth.

It's a bit cumbersome, but it does have a good sound...

Wow, this thread is way old. But since it's bumped anyway, for the past few years I've used the Logitech Z-5500 system (http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-THX-Certified-Digital-Surround-Speaker/dp/B0002WPSBC), and I think I'll be using these for many more years to come! Luckily, I grabbed these for waaaay cheaper than even the used prices on Amazon. Gotta love price mistakes ;)
