I'm happy the maestro is coming back, but on the other hand i'm worried as to the toll this may take on Mr. Williams considering his age right now. Nevertheless, JW is Star Wars music and glad to see him soar once again!

I think it will be interesting to see where he goes with it. 7 is set after the original trilogy? If so, I expect to hear the more traditional thematic material, but progressed. Certainly the style of the prequel trilogy should be less apparent? Hmm. Anyone know what sort of direction the plot is gonna take?

if it is anything like recent books, i will be happy. in star wars universe, i have to say that prequel movies are some of worst pieces...

John Williams is the logical choice, he own this music in many ways.
Still, I'm curious...I expect the style of these movies will change a bit with the Bad Robot Guys at the helm, so what if someone else would compose? I know a blasphemic remark for many and you can't go around JW...but still just curious..

I completely agree with you, in fact I will go further and say that I don't like too much Return as well, since Empire, that is an absolute master piece, all the others are crap.
But I'm excited about the music, not very enthusiatic about the movies that most likely will turn out to be trash as well...

Thing is musically, this has to harken back to the original trilogy. Assuming they even kind of follow the books, you'd have the return of Luke's theme, the force theme, Han and Leia's theme, the droids, etc. I just don't think that for the films, these themes can just be tossed or ignored. Likewise, the prequel themes will be gone or diminished. If they do anything along the lines of killing off Chewie, those scenes will be ripe for great and moving musical material. If the Solo kids appear, they'll all need themes. I just don't see anyone but Williams really appropriate for this job. Although, if the style of filming changes drastically, that could change. I really look for a maturing of the heroe's themes. Oh, and again if they take anything from the books, the Imperial fleet is still a threat. Without Vader or the Emperor's themes, perhaps a return to the Imperial themes of the first movie? Anda new Villain theme....so many possibilities. I look forward to this.

These news are not unexpected. He is Star Wars when it comes to the music, so it was kind of an obvious choice.

As long as a person is physically and mentally able to do its job then age is not really an issue. Morricone is even older than Williams and still continues to compose 2-3 scores per year and doing concerts worldwide!

I'm not surprised he returned. There is no other composer for Star Wars (Except maybe Jerry Goldsmith if he were still alive)

Hope they (the editors, sound engineers and sound effects people) don't butcher the score the maestro comes up with this time. I have nothing but admiration for Ben Burtt, but his sound effects should not drown John Williams amazing score cues, no matter what.
Does J.J. Abrams do that with Giacchino's scores? I know he changes stuff at the last moment (2009's Star Trek has some last minute changes regarding its main titles music), but I have a feeling Abrams has a lot of respect for the material, and he's probably in awe of working with Williams. All the prequel scores are all butchered and all over the place.
In any case, we're all looking forward to listening to new versions of some Star Wars classics...

Just need to devolve your style to the late 70's and we'll have another classic on our hands!

Haha, agreed. The music will go a long way to extending the feel of continuity to VII. The soundtracks of the prequel trilogy might be the only thing I can really appeciate about them.

That is good news. A composer of his calibre who brought the cinematic score back into vogue in 1977 after a decade or so of song orientated music for movies. Lets hope he comes up with something wonderful.
