I think you're confused about what fascism is, but yeah, I agree that the trend of technology getting more and more invasive is disturbing. It hasn't gotten disturbing enough yet for me to give up the advantages of my smartphone or my preference for Chrome, though.

Google collects data it tells you it's going to collect, gives you the opportunity for it to be not collected, and uses it more-or-less for your benefit... meanwhile, foreign governments are storing every single byte of data you ever passed over the internet; every email you type, every dirty letter you send your girlfriend, every bit of porn you look at, every bank transaction you make, every conversation you have with your boss, every Skype call, every messenger chat, every streamed video, every everything in order "to protect your freedom"... But don't worry... they promise they won't look at any of it... they just like to keep it just in case...
In comparison, what Google gets up to doesn't seem so bad. Not saying I approve of it... but we've got bigger problems. Google collect insignificant data about me and in exchange, provide me with free services which make my life easier. That's a transaction I can happily live with. If they abuse my data, then we have a problem... but for the moment, the worst that they do is stick ads in your face. Your TV does that to you every seven minutes - but Google's ads have at least a vague chance of interesting you personally...
If I am thus disturbed by that, I can turn off the TV, just as I can choose not to use Google.
Swings and roundabouts, folks...
My smartphone knows where in the world I am down to the nearest ten feet... which is bothersome from a privacy perspective but if somebody STEALS my smartphone, the police know exactly where to go looking for it. The lord giveth, and the lord taketh away.

Yes, I agree with both of you, and find Google very useful ( I say I put it in my bed, and it's true NOW, I'm not in the Forum posting or downloading but in my BED...I will use Google...for find a Movie to stream...
Both of you have understand a bit what I mean with "afraid"...
HeadphonesGirl, I have appreciated each time ( not enough ) you give us your way of thinking about a subject, so I'm finally like you also, and wan to enjoy a maximum of Tech...and get of when I will be obligated to "sell my soul"...
But it's lots of forms of fascism, the Politic one is the most dangerous, but other forms exist too, and can be dangerous ALSO...We don't have to think just about us...and have a large vision of the case...( my parents - more than 80 years old, without no idea of tech, are "Obligated to have an email" for get their $$ from Belgium )...for me that's a "form of fascism' !!!...you cannot exclude a part of population because their age, you could by "the knowledge or the level" but then it's fascist too :)...
Just, because it's not impossible, you can't deny...imagine that Google goes in "BAD HAND" ( without you to know it, of course...because if that happen, we won't know it )...it's a possibility to don't eliminated...by the pass many time in the History a "media" ( it's a medium but OK ;) ) has take part actively to a "cause"...

True...but who buy Skype ??? :), Microsoft "the enemy", they wan to control us too, Microsoft...but I have understand your way of thinking too, tangotreats... and I agree in many points !!! [ For the Moment we use them too, and I enjoy posting and have fun, I like that also, I will find a "New Movie to see" ;) ]
Also, if that not happen already: "under a cover of civism" a Government close to Google, could ask you to help for something true or fake that happen.... [ That's happen already, and Many times !!! ] !!!
You will tell me, "and then, go to yahoo for find what you wan" ...yes, but you see yahoo or Bing ( another crap ) ??? I even left my email ( old than around 20 years ) there, it start to ask me for KAPTCHA for send MY emails !!! ( tragic, soon Yahoo will close, I make a bet with anyone ???!!! )
Yes, I say it, I'm a bit afraid !!!

Can't disagree with that, although...

Well, every day I go to a big miserable building full of people I hate and do stuff I don't like doing, because if I don't I'll die of starvation. In order to get my money from my employer, I have to have a bank account. No bank account, no money. No money, no food, and nowhere to live. No food, no life - I'm dead.
Bank accounts are freely available, and they're useful things to have, and even if I didn't know how to use one I'd damn well learn because I'd want the benefits. We have to learn to speak a language to communicate. We have to go to work in order to make money. We have to get a bank account in order to function in society. We have to pass a test in order to drive a car. We have to do a lot of things. They're not forms of fascism; they're a fact of life.
Your parents needing an email address in order to get money... it's not exclusive, it's inclusive. It's a government institution standardising on a requirement it has decided is reasonable. This is the year 2013. Everybody has the ability to receive email and if they don't, they have no excuse not to learn. Being old and not being interested in modern technology is no excuse. When cavemen hunted for food, and a smart caveman invented a rifle so he could go and shoot his dinner from a distance rather than go strangle it, guess what happened to the other cavemen who said "Bah, modern techology! Why should I have to use that in order to live my life?!" (Answer to rhetorical question: They all died because the guy with the rifle shot every mammoth within range and the other guys had nothing left to eat.)
When the world evolves, you evolve with it or you become extinct.
It's a requirement of modern society - it's not expensive, and it's not difficult. We as humans have a duty to ourselves and our fellows.
About ten years ago, I worked at a job which maintained a stack of fax machines all with dedicated phone lines. That was all the rage in the 80s but when I was working there they were getting about three sensible faxes a week and about a 200-300 fax spam adverts that swallowed up the fax paper and used up ink. I used to spend half an hour to an hour every morning plowing through almighty reels of paper looking for anything that was vaguely legitimate and feeding the rest of the crap straight into the shredder.
Eventually we decided to get rid of the fax machines. The three people a week who sent faxes (the same three every time) complained, and funnily enough, I think they said we were being fascist by preventing them from communicating with us in the way they wanted. They protested that they were perfectly happy with the fax and resented us for forcing them into another system. It was nothing more than a simple fact of life; email is easier, email is cheaper, email is ubiquitous enough that expecting it is not unreasonable. The fax machines went in the bin, the phone lines were cancelled, and we saved enough money within a year to put on a free community festival. And those guys with the fax machines? They grumbled and complained, but THEY STARTED EMAILING US because they wanted to transact their business and that was the way they had to do it. One of them (a woman of 75 years) had no idea so her grandson helped her out until she knew what she was doing. ;)
So, yeah... you gotta do what you gotta do...
Just, because it's not impossible, you can't deny...imagine that Google goes in "BAD HAND" ( without you to know it, of course...because if that happen, we won't know it )...it's a possibility to don't eliminated...by the pass many time in the History a "media" ( it's a medium but OK ) has take part actively to a "cause"...
Well, that's possible, of course... although I still believe that even Google in a parallel universe of pure unadulterated evil... when compared to what our governments are doing to us on a daily basis... is not so much of a problem. So, Google go evil. What are they going to do? They've got my email, they know where I live. They know about me about the same as my girlfriend does. I'm more scared of my girlfriend getting pissed off with me than I am of Google doing nasty things with the contents of my Inbox... ;)

“Big Brother is Watching You.”
― George Orwell, 1984
“Now I will tell you the answer to my question. It is this. The Party seeks power entirely for its own sake. We are not interested in the good of others; we are interested solely in power, pure power. What pure power means you will understand presently. We are different from the oligarchies of the past in that we know what we are doing. All the others, even those who resembled ourselves, were cowards and hypocrites. The German Nazis and the Russian Communists came very close to us in their methods, but they never had the courage to recognize their own motives. They pretended, perhaps they even believed, that they had seized power unwillingly and for a limited time, and that just around the corner there lay a paradise where human beings would be free and equal. We are not like that. We know what no one ever seizes power with the intention of relinquishing it. Power is not a means; it is an end. One does not establish a dictatorship in order to safeguard a revolution; one makes the revolution in order to establish the dictatorship. The object of persecution is persecution. The object of torture is torture. The object of power is power. Now you begin to understand me.”
― George Orwell, 1984
“It was curious to think that the sky was the same for everybody, in Eurasia or Eastasia as well as here. And the people under the sky were also very much the same--everywhere, all over the world, hundreds or thousands of millions of people just like this, people ignorant of one another's existence, held apart by walls of hatred and lies, and yet almost exactly the same--people who had never learned to think but were storing up in their hearts and bellies and muscles the power that would one day overturn the world.”
― George Orwell, 1984

Google is a huge company, but if they start doing things that make people mistrust them, they can disappear fast just like any other company that loses all its customers and goes out of business. They exist because they provide a good service. If they stop doing that, they stop existing. It's the government you have to worry about. :P

The WP did a great article in June when the SHTF. Regarding "participating providers" to PRISM, Microsoft was the first to export user data from 9.11.2007 onwards. Followed by Yahoo, Google, Facebook, PalTalk, YouTube, Skype, AOL, and Apple over the next few years.
So watch what you say about the beloved leader, and refrain from illegal activity on the net. Pfff.

Nice piercing Yannis :D :D
guys, you should watch this show:
"Person of Interest"
"You are being watched. The government has a secret system: a machine that spies on you every hour of every day. I know, because I built it. I designed the machine to detect acts of terror, but it sees everything. Violent crimes involving ordinary people; people like you. Crimes the government considered 'irrelevant'. They wouldn't act, so I decided I would. But I needed a partner, someone with the skills to intervene. Hunted by the authorities, we work in secret. You'll never find us, but victim or perpetrator, if your number's up... we'll find you".
"The Machine is a mass surveillance computer system programmed to monitor and analyze data from surveillance cameras, electronic communications, and audio input throughout the world built in two unoccupied floors at Ingram's company IFT. From this data, the Machine accurately predicts violent acts. Under control of the U.S. Government, its stated purpose is to foresee terrorist attacks, allowing the government to forestall terrorist activity. However, the Machine detects future violent acts of all kinds, not just terrorism. Unknown to Finch, his partner, Nathan Ingram, created a routine, called "Contingency", on the eve of the government handover to access the non-relevant data. Ingram and Finch are seen accessing this program in the episode, "Zero Day". In the episode, Finch is appalled that Ingram has the data sent directly to him. At some point, Finch presumably has updated the Contingency routine, as it began to pass on the "irrelevant" non-terrorism data to him in the form of social security numbers, via coded messages over a public telephone."
