Original score by Dominic Frontiere
Original Broadcast 09/30/1963
"Scarecrows and magic and other fatal fears do not bring people closer together.
There is no magic substitute for soft caring and hard work, for self-respect and mutual love. If we can learn this from the mistake these frightened men made, then their mistake will not have been merely grotesque; it will have been at least a lesson - a lesson, at last, to be learned. "

SYNOPSIS
A group of scientists decide the best way to avert a global holocaust is to get countries of the world to unite against a common enemy. Allen Leighton (Culp) draws the short straw and is selected to be transformed into a Thetan.
The misguidedly heroic Allen's role as potential savior of humanity—which necessarily will destroy his private role as a loving husband/provider, is derailed emotionally for him (and for us, the helplessly captivated observers of this drama), once his wife unexpectedly reveals that she can, at last, bear his children, and thus make their private, personal dreams a reality.
But by then, it is too late— for, unbeknownst to her, Allen has already begun to undergo the unthinkable, horrific process that will erase his humanity and transform him into the doomed "scarecrow from another world".
The shared psychic bond between Culp and Brooks (and the "mark against evil") is another great element in the script, used sparingly and to great emotional effect. The only scene in the entire show that has a remote sense of calm or repose is the final evening at home between the lovers, just prior to Culp's departure and his faked death.
It's dark, moody, somber... and Brooks plays it with the exact right mix of resignation and ominous premonition.

THE SOUNDTRACK
The Architect's score was one of Domenic Frontiere's personal favorites.
It incorporated eight different versions of a love theme, "Allen and Yvette" with a strong reliance on strings and especially a harp.
The marchlike music that rolls in full-blast as the Thetan crashes through the woods was titled "The Bug Bugs Out" by Fontiere's copyist, Roger Faris; the man responsible for translating the master score into individual sheets of music for each member of the orchestra (courtesy David Schow).
For all of you Outer Limits fans, this is another of my re-created soundtracks.
Source material is again from a CDs, a DVDrip and a number of re-mixes to recreate the exact sound of the TV soundtrack, bar by bar.
