The music of Derek Bourgeois has been staple part of the brass band repertoire for well over 20 years. This survey by Dr King and Yorkshire Building Society coincides with the world premire of Apocalypse at the gala concert following the European Championships in 2003. This is virtuoso music for a virtuoso band but, since Dr Bourgeois is basically a tonal composer, everything on this disc would be immediately comprehensible to the non specialist listener.

I used to correspond with Derek about ten years ago, when he was still living out in Spain.

A true genius, a great man, and one of the most prolific - if not THE most prolific - contemporary composers. When we spoke he was up to about twenty symphonies, and now he's written EIGHTY symphonies...! Scary stuff...

Thanks for sharing Kevin. I didn't like the aggressive parts of Apocalypse and Blitz, but the other gentler sections I found really enjoyable.
