Thing is with this and the twin, Patriot Games, (and even Red October for that matter), is that though Clancy stories have no shortage of action, there is a lot of just standing around talking going on too. The film adaptations try to diminish that, but cannot cut it totally. They are not action films, they are suspense/spy films. A lot of the music has to be more mood than anything. That can often be a hard stand alone listen. All of the Clancy film scores seem to be that way for me. But, I saw this in the theater when it opened. Had no advance knowledge of any details. When the titles came on, within seconds, I knew we had a new Horner. I miss those days...

I totally agree. Those first few seconds of recovering from an attack of goosebumps was always the best as the logos arrived :) Giacchino's STAR TREK did it for me in 2009...

However, I cannot use the m4a formatg, how do I convert it to FLAC? Foobar2000 won't do it, Free Audio Converter does convert the files, but the result is not ok. Any suggestions?

This was not a lossless sourced share anyway? You can convert to flac all you want, it won't improve the quality of what is already there. That is why it sounds poor. It is not lossless to begin with. You would be better off asking wayward Goddesses for flac links.

The size of the m4a archives (270+233 MB) suggests it's lossless (m4a can be lossy OR lossless).

ALAC is natively supported by foobar. plug-ins are no longer needed.
it's true that foobar spits out error messages but also says that the source file is the problem.
the flac output can be read and played by audacity and foobar.

m4a part 1 and 2 are 270 and 235 mb. 505mb together. for my experience, alac cd, i have 6-12 mb more than for same files for flac encode, so this correctly sounds. also dbpoweramp shows for "Lossless (ALAC)" codec as mediainfo.

dbpoweramp worked very much for me. i have not played more than some bits, so cannot report complete correct conversion, but what i have works.

Ok, ALAC can be converted using VLC's stream/convert system, but you have to configure your audio codec or assign one if it is not already preset, as for me with uncompressed 44100 .wav (My fave conversion from from lossless encodes). Other pain in the ass is that I still cannot batch convert, so I do it track by track by directory. Yawn....
