I'm curious: why did it take so long for this movie to get a US DVD/Blu-ray release?

Because Warner Bros didn't make any money on it. It bombed in the box office. Critics said it was a mess. Critics said it was too complicated to follow. Critics thought the actors playing multiple roles was silly. Because we, the audience, are stupid sheep (like critics) that can't handle DIFFERENT or something that just might make you THINK.
Critics destroyed Blade Runner in 1982. Thirty years later guess what film is heralded as a masterpiece?
SO BUY THE DVD- order it from Amazon if you have to- and tell the critics to take a flying leap. Some of us enjoy watching a film multiple times, like reading a book multiple times only to discover more and more with each experience.
Timothy Cavendish says right at the beginning of the film TWO VERY IMPORTANT THINGS:
While my extensive experience as an editor has led me to a disdain for flashbacks and flash forwards and all such tricksy gimmicks, I believe that if you, dear reader, can extend your patience for just a moment, you will find there is a method to this tale of madness.
and
What is a critic but one who reads quickly, arrogantly, but never wisely.

Unfortunately the movie wasn't very well received by critics and wasn't even nominated for any Oscars even though many agree that it deserved at least a nomination for editing, make up and maybe music(which is amazing btw). Apparently it didn't make a lot of money either. Reasons for this are said to be bad marketing and a bad time of release. Most viewers liked it though. Metacritic score by critics: 55%, by viewers: 82%. I loved the movie and it's a shame what happened to it, it deserved much better. It won a few german film awards, though.

THIS you will find helpful: Cloud Atlas Movie Quotes-
Cloud Atlas Movie Quotes - 'Our lives are not our own.' (
http://www.moviequotesandmore.com/cloud-atlas-movie-quotes.html#.UZ0009h2G41)
Cloud Atlas is a tour-de-force that spans six different stories in six different time period that are intertwined to create a mental workout. The time lines and genres are split as follows; 1849 - historical narrative, 1936: drama/romance, 1973: mystery/action, 2012: dark comedy, 2144: sci-fi and 2321 and 2346: post-apocalyptic. In each of these stories we meet various characters, played by the same ensemble cast whose lives and experiences ripple throughout past and future and are somehow connected. This is a movie made on a truly lavish scope and despite its multiple parallel storylines manages to flow seamlessly blending strong storytelling with brain teasing plots and characters providing a beautiful mess. This movie will not be for everyone due to its length and complexity, but the multiple narratives are so engaging it should be viewed at least once if not several times. Cloud Atlas movie quotes requires a certain amount of brain work, but the pay off at the end is worth it.

I now find it ironic that Phideas1 has played a part in my watching this movie far earlier than anticipated...at the very least you've hastened the inevitable, but in the long term I can only hope that your actions will help Cloud Atlas attain the recognition it truly deserves.

Even as I was watching "Cloud Atlas" the first time, I knew I would need to see it again. Now that I've seen it the second time, I know I'd like to see it a third time — but I no longer believe repeated viewings will solve anything. To borrow Churchill's description of Russia, "it is a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma." It fascinates in the moment. It's getting from one moment to the next that is tricky.
Surely this is one of the most ambitious films ever made. The little world of film criticism has been alive with interpretations of it, which propose to explain something that lies outside explanation. Any explanation of a work of art must be found in it, not taken to it. As a film teacher, I was always being told by students that a film by David Lynch, say, or Warner Herzog, was "a retelling of the life of Christ, say, or 'Moby Dick.' " My standard reply was: Maybe it's simply the telling of itself.
Yet "Cloud Atlas" cries out for an explanation, and surely you've noticed that I've been tap-dancing around one. I could tell you that it relates six stories taking place between the years 1849 and 2346. I could tell you that the same actors appear in different roles, playing characters of different races, genders and ages. Some are not even human, but fabricants. I could tell you that the acting and makeup are so effective that often I had no idea if I was looking at Tom Hanks, Halle Berry or Jim Broadbent. I could tell you that, and what help is it?
I could tell you that each segment is a refashioning of the story contained in the previous one. That the same birthmark turns up in every period of time. That a repeated motif is that all lives are connected by a thirst for freedom. That the movie was inspired by the much-loved novel of the same name by David Mitchell. That in the novel, the stories were told in chronological order, and then circled back again from end to beginning. That the movie finds its connections through the reappearances of the same actors in different roles and deliberately refers to one story from within another.
Now are you wiser? I'm treading water. And now could follow a very long paragraph introducing and describing the different characters played by the actors. But you would lose your way all the same, because many of the performances and disguises are so cunningly effective. I could tell you that Halle Berry's work as a mid-1970s investigative reporter works well for me, and the gnarly wisdom of Tom Hanks as an old man telling tales is the most impenetrable.
I despair. I think you will want to see this daring and visionary film, directed by Lana Wachowski, Tom Tykwer and Andy Wachowski. Anywhere you go where movie people gather, it will be discussed. Deep theories will be proposed. Someone will say, "I don't know what in the hell I saw." The names of Freud and Jung will come up. And now you expect me to unwrap the mystery from the enigma and present you with a nice shiny riddle?
I was never, ever bored by "Cloud Atlas." On my second viewing, I gave up any attempt to work out the logical connections between the segments, stories and characters. What was important was that I set my mind free to play. Clouds do not really look like camels or sailing ships or castles in the sky. They are simply a natural process at work. So too, perhaps, are our lives. Because we have minds and clouds do not, we desire freedom. That is the shape the characters in "Cloud Atlas" take, and how they attempt to direct our thoughts. Any concrete, factual attempt to nail the film down to cold fact, to tell you what it "means," is as pointless as trying to build a clockwork orange.
But, oh, what a film this is! And what a demonstration of the magical, dreamlike qualities of the cinema. And what an opportunity for the actors. And what a leap by the directors, who free themselves from the chains of narrative continuity. And then the wisdom of the old man staring into the flames makes perfect sense.

Because Warner Bros didn't make any money on it.
While true, that's not the reason. In fact, usually bombs come out quicker.
Warner paid about $15-20M of the film's $100M budget. The rest was financed independently by foreign investors. Warner handled (mishandled?) the US release while each individual investment company handled its own theatrical release in each country. So the Germans who invested controlled when it got released in Germany, etc. Warner could have stepped in and coordinated a worldwide release strategy. They chose not to. The result was that the film got a staggered worldwide release covering many months. It has only recently been released in some territories.
That's the real reason we're only now getting the video release. Part of their distribution deal was that it not be released on video until the worldwide theatrical rollout was complete.
But I agree that it is an amazing film that everyone should at least try. I've watched at least pieces of it everyday since it was first available as an iTunes early release back in April.

Fans of large, expansive science fiction movies with an A-list cast will be disappointed with today's box office reports. “Cloud Atlas” flopped at the box office and may cause movie producers to shy away from more challenging big-budgeted movies in the future.
“Cloud Atlas” faced plenty of obstacles ahead of the disappointing $9.8 million opening weekend gross. The film, starring Tom Hanks and Halle Berry, spans generations and features six interconnected stories. Hanks and Berry both play multiple roles throughout "Cloud Atlas" and the movie was directed by the Wachowski siblings, directors of the Matrix trilogy, and Tom Tykwer, director of “Run Lola Run.” The film is an adaptation of the novel by David Mitchell.
According to Box Office Mojo, one reason why “Cloud Atlas” flopped was due to the marketing. Because of the expansive and complicated story, the studio could not develop a compelling advertising campaign to promote the film and sell it to audiences. The film also had a long runtime, topping out at 164 minutes, naturally deterring some moviegoers.
“Cloud Atlas” also face challenges when it came to critics as well. There was no consensus among critics, although “Cloud Atlas” received mostly positive reviews. According to Rotten Tomatoes, “Cloud Atlas” was 63 percent fresh among critics, including 108 positive reviews and 64 negative reviews.
“Cloud Atlas” features a complicated plot, multiple story lines that intersect, and is epic in scope and size. This could be a joy to behold for some, or a confused mess for others and as such, audiences were unsure if “Cloud Atlas” was worth the time, money or effort to watch.

Cloud Atlas was originally slated for DVD in Feb. but Warners Bros. pushed it back. The film opened to big numbers in Russia. I have friends who say they do not want to see the film because they do not wish to THINK. Another friend said the critics didn't like it so they would not go see it. One more friend said her daughter stated it was a complicated movie so go see something else.
How many characters were in Godsford Park? How many different story lines took place in that film? How did they all connect?
