Reviews
by Blair Sanderson ~ Allmusic
Conductor and arranger John Wilson has carved out a niche in the area of film music, reviving the scores from classic films and reconstructing lost material where possible. This 2012 recording of selections from the movie musicals of Rodgers and Hammerstein is a sincere tribute to the legendary team that wrote Oklahoma!, Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I, and The Sound of Music. The program offers popular numbers that Wilson has in most instances edited, and in the case of The Carousel Waltz, If I Loved You, Bali Ha'i, the Overture to The King and I, and the Main Title and Preludium from The Sound of Music, reconstructed, usually in league with Andrew Cottee. Because these films are still readily available, it's shocking to learn that the scores and parts that were used in recording the soundtracks seldom exist any longer, and that performing versions must be painstakingly reconstructed, sometimes from conductors' short scores or even from extant recordings. Wilson and his eponymous orchestra play the music with a buoyant energy and vitality that go beyond mere preservation or slavish re-creation, and the spontaneous performances by seasoned stars Julian Ovenden, Sierra Boggess, Joyce DiDonato, Anna-Jane Casey, Marla Ewing, and the Maida Vale Singers give the music striking personalities that are distinct from the originals. EMI's reproduction is bright and vivid, so there is a feeling of living presence that makes the album a joy to hear.

Rodgers & Hammerstein: At The Movies, is the new album from world renowned conductor and arranger John Wilson and his hand-picked orchestra The John Wilson Orchestra. Showcasing music from Rodgers & Hammersteins big five; their best loved musicals, including Youll Never Walk Alone (Carousel), Oh, What A Beautiful Mornin! (Oklahoma) and Im Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair (South Pacific), brought to life by soloists Sierra Boggess, Anna-Jane Casey, Joyce DiDonato, Maria Ewing, Julian Ovenden, David Pittsinger, and the Maida Vale Singers.
I love the John Wilson Orchestra and the great joy of their latest album Rodgers and Hammerstein at the Movies is that it features the great Joyce Didonato. Joyce joins in the fun through the marvels of modern technology the orchestra was in London and Joyce recorded in Kansas. She sings on the track Youll Never walk alone which comes from Carousel and in my opinion no one does this better than her. ~ David Mellor Classic FM October 2012
[Joyce DiDonato's] performance of Climb Every Mountain surely ranks among the best ever recorded. ~ Warwick Thompson Metro October 2012
Joyce DiDonato brings her peerless legato and creamy tonal opulence to the big tear-jerkers from Carousel and The Sound of Music. [...] An antidote to winter blues if ever there was one this life-affirming disc is a guaranteed mood-lifter! ~ Presto Classical October 2012
Performer:
Featuring the Maida Vale Singers and soloists Sierra Boggess, Anna-Jane Casey, Joyce DiDonato, Maria Ewing, Julian Ovenden and David Pittsinger.
