Yay, it's Christmas - and I'm bringing the first two Potters back :) I've always loved this particular score. I know, William Ross "only" interpolated music John Williams composed for the first one. But he did so wonderfully and I still think that this is the more rounded and complete score (despite the lack of theme intertwinement). Four years ago I described the sound of my Deluxe Edition as "true reference material". That wasn't far from the truth. But over the years I thought that my set was sounding a little too abrasive and that the stage wasn't wide enough. And just like it was with 'Philosopher's Stone' I didn't get deep bass right. I corrected all of this for the updated version here while improving low-level resolution slightly. And since this score is now 15 years old (!), I re-titled it "15th Anniversary Deluxe Edition" :). Otherwise there isn't much to tell. I love the new and improved version just like I loved the old one.
I also updated the cover here. Four years ago I just took the faux-leather cover I used for 'Philosopher's Stone' and coloured it differently. But when I updated this set a few days ago, I thought that it would make sense to replace the badge in the middle with a badge or a theme releated to the movie. And since I created a template for possible future use anyway ('Prisoner Of Azkaban'... won't someone please give me the sessions so that I can turn them into a lovely Edition? Please?), I had the background with any badge anyway. So instead of the crest for Hogwarts I opted for a Slytherin crest. I dabbled a bit, I could have looked for a snake but in the end I decided that a crest representing Slytherin House AND Salazar Slytherin served all purposes. But beyond that... well, I erased one cover. I never liked it and so it was gone. I also attempted to create new covers but I couldn't find suitable material anymore and I also didn't want to spend too much time editing sub-standard material. Still, I'm happy with the improved covers :)
So please enjoy it. And give the score a little more credit, it deserves it ;)
Old Text:
Two years ago I created a Deluxe Edition for 'The Sorcerer's Stone' (grab it here) (
Thread 97866) and now its that time again for Harry Potter! The recording sessions for 'The Chamber of Secrets' were released on FFS five months ago and while they were shared as lossless FLAC they actually came from lossy material. Because these were the recording sessions they were not mastered in any way, which was plain obvious. The dynamics of these sessions was breathtaking: the differences between soft and loud parts were immense and while this is a sign of extremely well done engineering it was detrimental to the flow of the score. Apart from the dynamics the sound of these sessions was (surprisingly) superior to the OST, showcasing better staging and definition.
In order to improve consistency I reduced the dynamics as much as possible without the result sounding too unnatural. I also extracted the best possible sound out of this mp3 derived material by faking a lossless frequency response (test it with TAU analyzer, itll be reported as CDDA) and by tweaking the overall frequency response. In short: apart from the immense yet unobtrusive dynamic compression (for the experts: most of the time I used automated faders) I lifted the sound to the level of excellency presented by 'Star Wars Episode II' which is one of the best sounding soundtrack CDs ever released. The Deluxe Edition of 'The Chamber of Secrets' now is true reference material and Im very happy with myself (and also a tad proud). If these two CDs sound boring or dampened than you have problems with the tonality of your stereo; the music now has a breathtaking amount of crispness, definition and low level resolution while sounding warm and highly characteristic at the same time, Ive made things audible in soft areas youve never heard before while loud parts still sound as impressive as before. Another area of improvement is the staging because its much wider (but with correct stereo separation!) and much more natural and holographic now.
For the cover I just took the files I did two years ago for 'The Philosopher's Stone' and tweaked them to fit the new material (I also got rid of some errors on the way). Youll notice that the cover in the upper left corner is similar to one of the former covers, the only difference that its tinted differently (and obviously has different titles). That way itll fit right in.
Despite being now quasi-lossless you shouldnt create mp3s from it, basically you would re-encode an already lossy source. I faked a full frequency response for only one reason: so that mad people like me wouldnt complain about missing frequencies (they probably would not hear anyway). For portable use Id recommend mp3, aac or ogg with a bitrate as high as -V0 (for mp3) or 320 kBit/s in order for artifacts to remain inaudible.

Well, you already know my opinion on your amazing Deluxe Edition of Philosopher's Stone, there's little doubt in my mind that this score will be just as amazing as that was. And of course, I'll be onhand to reupload this just in case it gets taken down just like last time. No one who calls themselves fan of these scores should miss out on these incredible Deluxe Editions.

You should buy the OST, it has an additional track called 'Harry's wondrous World' which I did not include because it was tracked from 'The Philosopher's Stone' with a new coda sloppily tacked on.
And the ampersand was me, Johnny Williams is innocent ;)
As always, I combined some tracks and in this case I made it transparent because it was relevant to the story. I hate slashs and prefer ampersands when titling tracks.

No, it's not you. John Williams does it on all his score releases. The first Williams score of mine I noticed it on was Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. And then I noticed it on Tintin. And then I checked Star Wars, Harry Potter, and so on and nearly every one of his scores has an ampersand as opposed to a slash. Drives me up the wall

Youre right of course. But since I tagged all the tracks myself (and came up with more or less funny names in some cases) I could have easily avoided this. I really like those ampersands though, it creates some kind of order I understand.

Finally finished listening to this and must say i really enjoyed the listen. 'Molta Bella'! This is how the score should be heard. As smooth as butter! When i listened to this i actually felt like i was in the room listening to this live. Loudness is completely non existent compared to the ost which suffers from a very aggressive sound as with a lot of williams scores. i dunno what it is with his commercial releases but the brass is way too bright and loud. Here it is a pretty as a picture. Brass is soft and strings are tasteful. Even the bells make me smile. You should give yourself a pat on the back for this remaster. i dont know how you did it but you have made lossy material sound just like a lossless piece just like with lady in the water . So far you are the second person to achieve this. The other person knows who he/she is ;). A very well done to you yet again!

Interesting. The OST had a noticeable boost around 10 kHz which could account for the slightly piercing sound. The sessions lacked this, they were also mixed slightly different. The OST did have something funny going on in the left channel; it was louder but it didnt sound that way. Furthermore the OST sounded very compact which is curious because the sessions had an almost perfect staging and stereo separation. I wonder what ideas Simon Rhodes and Patricial Sullivan-Fourstar for the sound...
If theres one thing Im proud of (I deal in details :D) its that low level resolution is far superior. I finally discovered how professionals are making low level signals sound well, especially when their gain is brought up. Chamber of Secrets really made possible an "So thats how they do it!!"-moment. I have been using just an hour ago for 'Signs' again - and Im repeatedley very happy with the result.

... Oh, you know him. As for the ways... Square root signal improvements technic (includes noise reduction) through crossed sync-up captures remixing, when possible. Also, maybe frequency response remelting.
Sounds technical said like this, but more an "artist" somehow. Not a technical master as you are. :)

Aaaah, now I understand... partly at least. Its an interesting way to approach audio with methods knows from image related - visual - technology. Ive never mastered that approach and from what Ive experienced its limited. Though its very likely that Ive overseen some important things.

This is excellent - really love that this release includes more of the "chamber of secrets" theme (featured usually just before/after someone has been petrified). Is it just me though, or are two of the tracks suddenly cut short? The flying car and the quidditch match, that I've noticed.
Don't think anyone else has mentioned this yet, so maybe it is only me?!?

It could be that some music from the first movie was tracked for these scenes. I dont know since I havent seen it for a year or two. Its a fact that loads of music were tracked from the first one but Im unsure if it happened for these scenes you refer to.

Thank you, SonicAdventure. I can notice the differences in the sound timber -more obvious to me in areas not very loud- and spatially (that's what's staging is, right?) and enjoy them, but my biggest thanks are for adjusting the dynamics. While I hadn't any complaint about this score (I had not the sessions), I have suffered other sets, and the listening is really ruined when you have to fight against the album for the adequate volume time after time. Being the original thing so "raw" as you explained, you've spared us some extra heartbeats and swearings of our neighbors. They send their thanks too.

Thanks for this! I'm fairly new to these forums and have only just discovered your Deluxe Editions. I must say they are absolutely INCREDIBLE! I'm thoroughly enjoying the Avatar & Treasure Planet ones at the moment, now the HP ones too! :) Amazing, so thanks again! :D

If someone releases the sessions and if those will be of decent quality, there will be a Deluxe Edition of TPoA.

I'm sorry, I don't have that one. But keep in mind Sonic made it before the 2CD Intrada release. Maybe you just want to listen to Sonic's version... I don't know. But otherwise I would just try to get the Intrada release.

I would get the Intrada release. Oh wait, I bought it :D
Aside from some mastering issues and some crossfades that could be improved (or created), its a good edition.

I actually did! Maybe I'm nuts but a lot of the Intrada sounded shockingly bad to my ears. Some of the early tracks on the first disc, for example, sounded like shitty, badly compressed MP3. Maybe it was just really poorly preserved.
Regardless, the score itself pales in comparison to Williams' Amistad.

Sorry to keep posting the same request on here but the last time I tried to download the newly revised edition in flac from 2017 there were only two working links left and both of them required me to create an account with their site in order to get the links. After going through that process for both sites, I still couldn't get the download links. If anyone could provide some help with this issue or even kindly add an alternate download link, I would greatly appreciate it!!!! Thanks so much Sonic for your work!!!

All links are down, at least for FLAC, making it impossible to download the Updated 1.5 version.
Does anyone have a link to a mirror that we all can use? If not, could anyone upload it again?

Sorry, I saw this just now. No, I won't do a new version since those "new" sources are nothing new really. Besides, it wasn't mastered so where'd be the point?
