Edmund Meisel was one of the finest composers who wrote original scores
for silent films at a time when most such works were still more or less compilations
of classical music and/or inferior "original music" that was actually ripped off
from the classics, too, but credited to a composer. There were some notable
score at the time, especially in Europe: Gottfried Huppertz's Metropolis,
or Dmitri Shostakovich's The New Babylon are outstanding achievements.
Battleship Potemkin, with its brutal attacks and almost futurism-like style,
is particularly brilliant. It was considered so powerful and inflammatory at the time
that in some countries the score was banned from being played during screenings
of Eisenstein's revolutionary masterpiece. The Holy Mountain is mellow by comparison,
but has beautifully crafted melodies and individual scenes.

"[Meisel's] music for The Holy Mountain is romantic, and indeed veers into the impressionistic at
times, in keeping with the mood and subject of the movie.
The playing by the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana is impeccable, and [the] score is revealed as
substantial enough to stand on its own, separate from the movie for which it was written --
the lyricism of parts of The Holy Mountain score is extremely beguiling, and that film's music
may yet find an audience."
