I've put this here, because I didn't really know what to classify this game as but I figure, it's a game, so i'll put it in here.
I just bought my GameCube yesterday, which came with a free Gameboy Player and game. After having fun for 10 minutes playing FF Tactics Advance on the BIG screen, I put in my free game.
Now, I loved Lylat Wars (Star Fox 64 in the States). Back in the old days, I bought a Nintendo 64 for one reason - Perfect Dark. I never got around to getting it, but there were two games I did have, and played incessently - Star Wars Episode I: Racer, and Lylat Wars.
Sure, to an extent it was a Star Wars rip-off - the Arwing (R-Wing?) may as well have been an X-Wing, but the characters and locations were endearing. Who couldn't identify with Fox McCloud, fearless fighter pilot? It was an example of good old fashioned Nintendo fun.
So, when I got my free game, I had a choice of four - Super Mario Sunshine, Super Smash Brothers Melee, Luigi's Mansion, and Star Fox Adventures. Call me a heretic, but I find Smash Bros boring beyond all belief - even playing with my friends, I get over it in half an hour. Luigi's Mansion I played a demo of, and Super Mario ditto, and both seemed like normal platform fare to me.
That left Star Fox Adventures. A game I knew nothing about, except it starred my favourite fox hero... uh... Fox. So take it home I did - and I have not regretted it since.
I've only just started playing it, but already I love it - now, Zelda has never really appealed to me, and Ocarina of Time wasn't my cup of tea, and SFA emulates Zelda to a T. But I still love it. I can't really explain why - I think it's just the characters that needed to grab my attention. I haven't got into the meat of the story yet, but already it promises to be an indepth, engrossing game.
The most disappointing thing is the Arwing sequences - but they're still a blast. Sure, they're exactly the same as Lylat Wars, but they have prettier graphics, so it's ok by me. They're SFA's 'gummi ship' anyway, and they do a heck of a lot better job than that little nuisance in Kingdom Hearts.
So, first impressions - Fox McCloud kicking ass with a magic staff = cool. The fact that tis designed by Rareware makes it even better - I know i'm going to be playing a tight game the whole way through.
The only thing that i'm not looking forward to is the time-limit - FF Crystal Chronicles is Friday, and from what i've heard, SFA is a better game. But when The Twin Snakes comes out in a couple of weeks, Snake is going to require my full attention... so hopefully i'll beat SFA before then ;)
...and no, I haven't finished FF 10-2 yet. My PS2 is lonely. It will have to wait until after The Twin Snakes is done :D
But I digress - is there anyone else here who owns / has played Star Fox Adventures? Share your experiences!
