Herbert Howells
Orchestral Works I & II
1) Kings Herald
2) Paradise Rondel
3) Fantasia for cello & orchestra
4) Threnody for cello & orchestra
5) Pastoral Rhapsody
6) Procession
I was pulled over by the police for listening to this music too loud in my truck. Howells was known for his work for voice & choir. Only after his death did these works for orchestra surface thanks to the effort of the late Christopher Palmer. Procession grows ever louder, the orchestration, with its use of orchestral piano with harp and xylophone coloration reflects this excitement. Pastoral Rhapsody the composer conducted in 1924 and then allowed it to be forgotten. Why? Maybe he thought it too close to Vaughan Williams Pastoral Symphony. If so, who care? Its lovely. Paradise Rondel is based on a place in Gloucester good for walking and full of tunes such as these. Kings Herald he entered as a ceremonial piece for King George VI. Fantasia for cello is yet another work evoked by the death of his young son, possibly part of a future cello concerto, but then forgotten. Threnody for cello was to be the slow movement for the same unfinished work and another of his emotional musical expressions for a dead child.
