I wish I was kidding, I really do.
LucasFilm has just been bought by Disney. And their first move was to announce Star Wars Episode VII for a 2015 release date.

i believe luke became a dark jedi, and then a grey jedi or something, and then some other stuff happened, in the comics and/or the books or whatever. what i'm wondering is if they'll stay true to this or not.
either way, i think it's absolutely disgusting and completely typical of where modern film has gone as a medium, certainly among the big studios anyway, and i have no idea why they'd want to further pervert the franchise which fucked itself to death with the prequel trilogy. actually it's pretty obvious, it's a guaranteed buck or several billion, everyone knows this. doesn't make it suck any less. this isn't even a comment on disney's ability to make quality shit, just the fact that star wars, particularly the core story of the films, has been butchered to death and beyond.

Hopefully (slim hope) they will be based WAY after the ROJT - since this is the story about Annikan/Vader and his legacy. The Legacy comic series was set 100 years post Jedi and had Imperial Knights and Jedi Knights at logger heads until a new breed of Sith arrived to wipe them both out. All that stood in thier way was Cade Skywalker who despite his linage didn't care enough to help anyone but himself. Was a very good series.

it wouldnt surprise me to have them just give a big FU to the expanded universe. it would be a very george lucas type thing to do. i'm looking forward to the movies, and really hope they dont screw with the established continuity (or better yet, actually make movies from some of the stories in books and comics). but i don't have great hope, given holywood these days.
on a soundtrack note, i wonder if williams will return for these films, and also if the soundtracks will get a proper release now that a new company is in charge (though disney doesnt have a stellar record either with concern of soundtracks).
now I feel that Jedis force will be heavily raped

ha ha, a kingdom hearts style tie up would crack me up. the range, and intensity, of the reactions would be something to behold. some would absolutely love it and buy everything, others would rage like few have raged before.
no chance that will happen though, but i am not optimistic about whatever the film will be; if they did do something EU then i will be more interested, but i have no doubt that they won't think twice about deviating from the pre-existing EU storylines if they think their own story would get more of a reaction. as for specifics though, i mean, mark hammill, he's old now, right? it would be downright distracting if they got ford, an older chewie, old lando etc. i think carrie's dead so the princess is out, unless they digitise everything; i don't know.

Timothy Zahn has commented that he had a brief discussion with Lucas a year back, and new movies came up with Zahn worries that his creations would be for nothing and Lucas's idea (then) was to possibly do something with the next generation since Prequels were young Annikan, Originals were young Luke (sorry for the spoiler - son of Annikan). And the EU would be incorporated where possible.

After reading an interview with Hamill, Solo and Fisher saying they's reprise their roles, that's all I need to look forward to this. I don't think it's gonna match episodes 4-6. But I hope it'll be good enough to spawn episode 8. The prequel, while I found it was well done, didn't live up to a lot of people's expectations but I didn't think it was as bad as many made it seem.

I truly hope that in Episode VII they add just one minor line/reference in which a character refers to "Senator Binks" having been brutally murdered several years prior. I don't know how they'd do it but just to know that Jar-Jar was killed off even in canon would legitimize the new trilogy for me :P

Why is everyone so hateful towards Jar-Jar? Just because he was annoying doesn't mean he has to be hated. I have friends and family members, even random people on the street who are annoying. But I'm not hateful towards any of them. If Jar-Jar did something really bad, then there's still no reason to hate, But I can understand the hatred. He didn't do anything bad though. You ever see him kill or threaten anyone? No because he's harmless. Why hate someone so harmless? If you're gonna hate him, might as well hate 3P0 too because he's annoying and he's mean to R2 in the original trilogy. But do I hate him? Wish he was nicer to R2 (who was in both Star Trek moves by the way) but no I don't hate him r Jar-Jar.
Might as well hate Darth Vader and all the other bad guys who did a lot more than Jar-Jar and 3P0 did. Might as well hate the jawas too just for ending up in Jabba's Palace after Luke's aunt and uncle died in A New Hope.

Jar Jar didn't listen while he was the Naboo Senator 2nd so when Padme took off to save the galaxy with Annikan, Jar Jar forced the vote to create the Clone Army and voted for it! That was against everything Padme and Organa and their rebellion buddies wanted. Because of that, Palpy had his final card played for him and hello Empire!!
Because of Jar Jar, look at all the bad shit that occurred.
To be fair, Qui-Gon Jinn had already had the clone army started. Jar Jar only worked to get the Republic to agree to use it. xD

I think it's kinda cute that in the foul year of our lord 2013 star wars still evokes some sort of emotion from people. Quite honestly, to think that the francise ever had some sort of artistic integrity or values outside box office performance is silly. Even the original trilogy only provided an easily digestible, mass market alternative to the intelligent hard sci-fi of the 70's. Since those movies the few beacons of light in the swamp of garbage star wars media, be it books or video games, have always came out of hands not connected to George Lucas so I don't really see why there should be some wierd predicament set against these new disney movies.
The new movie will probably be some sort of re-imagination / split timeline thing like they did with the new Trek movie so that the nerds who actually care about something as fundamentally hosed as star wars canon don't wet themselves too bad.

Sorry, guys, but ever since Disney gave the franchise a continuity reboot right in the keister and re-branded the old Expanded Universe as "Legends" (read: non-canon alternate timeline), I don't think we'll see Kyle Katarn in the new movie, no matter how much we'd love to.
TheForce.net already has an article or two about this group of protesting STAR WARS fans DEMANDING that Disney reinstate the old EU - kinda reminds me of Barriss Offee during the final arc of The Clone Wars, Season 5: these guys mean well (after all, the EU as we know it is as old as the films themselves) but their methods are seriously flawed (can you say "death threats against R.A. Salvatore for killing off Chewie in Vector Prime"?).
On the other hand, maybe it's for the best - plenty of other multimedia franchises have gone through the old "start from scratch" moment: DC, Marvel, Transformers, even Star Trek, to name a few.
I guess that in the end, it all comes down to one's "P-Canon" (Personal Canon); for example, where both the old and new continuities are concerned, the only stories that make sense to me are the ones that answer questions brought up by watching the movies. I've got a pretty long list, but I'll boil it down to the essentials:
Shadows of the Empire (picks up where TESB left off and leads right into RotJ; explains where Luke got his green lightsaber, how the Rebellion intercepted the plans for the second Death Star and what Luke, Leia & Lando's original attempt to rescue Han was)
Clone Wars and The Clone Wars (maps out the 3 year period between AotC and RotS; whichever one you pick, you'll still get to see Anakin being every bit the bad@$$ Jedi Obi-Wan described to Luke in ANH)
The Force Unleashed and Rebels (explores the 19-year arc between RotS and ANH; each story fleshes out the aftermath of the Great Jedi Purge and the birth of the Rebel Alliance)
X-Wing and Rogue Squadron video games (delves into the larger galactic battleground during the Original Trilogy from behind the controls of your favorite starfighter)

Not gonna waste my time going to the cinema to see it as I know I'll be given it on Blu Ray when it's released in about 6 months time. Honestly, I don't know how I feel regarding this. On one hand, it's good that they are bringing a new chapter to the screen... on the other, Disney pretty much are gonna to do it, what Ubisoft does with the AC games, Sledgehammer Games/etc do with CoD...
I'm not that much of a fan of Luke and co truth be told... I'll stick with the Old Republic era.

I've seen it twice and enjoyed even more on the second viewing. I would not say it is perfect, but the new characters are great, especially Rey and BB-8. My only complaint is that it felt like we (the audience) missed the first act of the movie. An extra 15-20 min at the beginning to slow the pace down notch and give more context to the relationships between villain and heroes would have been nice.

I actually like the sound of the spin-offs. It allows us to see a different side to the Star Wars universe in the spin-offs, exploring characters that don't receive a lot of focus or whose backstories aren't fleshed out and events that are still mostly a mystery while the main "Episodes" continue the saga of the Skywalker family. The Star Wars universe is so vast that it lends itself to so many stories and takes. The spin-offs allow directors to be very experimental with the series and offer wildly new takes on the series. For example, Rogue One has been described as being very grounded and down to earth, focusing on a small team trying to achieve an impossible task against an overwhelming foe. It's also the first movie without any force users making it something we haven't seen before in a Star Wars movie. Plus, since Disney has ditched the bloated, incomprehensible, unorganised and, at times, quite stupid EU; it allows the Star Wars universe to be fleshed out properly with proper oversight, continuity and sticking to established rules.
And while Disney may be in it for the money, the people making the Star Wars movies are passionate fans of the series who do their best to deliver a great movie. Each movie is also a collaborative process allowing each movie to have a more focused vision and various voices pointing out what does and doesn't work (this is what the prequels lacked). There's also many fascinating stories to be told in the universe. There's many loose plot threads to be resolved and many questions that can be answered in the spin-offs such as: What set Han Solo on his smuggling path and what circumstances led to Chewbacca owing him a life debt and becoming his loyal companion? How did Boba Fett become the most feared Bounty Hunter in the galaxy? How did a small team of Rebel Spies manage to get the plans to the Death Star? What happened to Darth Maul now he has an army of loyal Madalorians and is he still hunting Obi-Wan looking for revenge? There's plenty of stories to be told. Only the movies, Clone Wars and Rebels are canon now meaning Disney and the team of Lucasfilm have a whole universe to explore.
I liked it. It was very derivative but was obviously constructed to take the best aspects of the original trilogy and apply them to a story with new and old characters alike, and compressed into a 2-hour time slot. The plot was incredibly formulaic and it lacked development, but it was exciting. Not as good as the original trilogy but much better than anything LucasArts could have made.

I was invited to see this on the weekend with my cousins... and yeah... I have to admit I agree with your assessment. My cousins loved it, thought it was the greatest... me? Yeah, confirmed to stay with the Old Republic era. Disney seems focused on continuing the SW saga set AFTER RotJ, and with some elements from the Old Republic era (games/comics/novels referenced in the prequel trilogy...) Just leave that era alone Disney and we'll be fine

But at least this movie didn't feel like a remake to A New Hope, The movie would bother me if it did, but it doesn't. I loved it. :)
One thing I wanted to point out was that the cuts between scenes sometimes used the same type of cut-away as in the original trilogy (I purged my memory of the prequels so don't ask me if they were in there). Lucas got it from Kurosawa (he even said so), so I was glad to see that homage that probably flew over many people's heads.
