This is for those of you who have the game and are playing it extensively. I'm interested in (A) Which version of the game you bought and (B) What you think about it, and finally (C) Why you chose to buy that version over the other one (even if it is something stupid like "I only own a PC" or something.)
I'd like to know the differences between the versions, so to speak, and this seems the best way to do so.
Cheers guys and gals. :)

Uh.... PS2 version isn't even out in English yet Adam. XD
If you haven't got it yet... I would recommend getting the PS2 version... just because the controls in the game were really made for a console.

That makes sense to me, I was just wondering if there was a BIG difference in the appearance of the game and the way it plays because of the differences in hardware et all.
Anyways, cheers for the pointers, guys.
Well on the PS2 you wont accidentally hit the windows key and minimize the screen and get booted from the game. So thats another plus for the PS2.
Also, even if you have the most up to date hardware on your PC... the game is going to look almost exactly the same on PS2.

Id say PS2 cause my PC is crappy
PLUS
PS2 would have better graphics!
it might have better graphics than your crappy computer... but overall the pc visuals are way better than ps2

Anyway, Typo has FFXIPC, and ish getting the PS2 also, though he would not necessarily recommend getting both.
It's just that if the PC breaks down for some reason, I've got the other system to play it on. Typo ish sick of HDD failures and other such computer-related mishaps =._.=;;,
Hmm, I am more likely to play the PS2 version since I could even play the game on the floor (yummy carpet) if I wanted to, instead of having to sit at the PC on this uncomfortable chair in this cramped up room. >.>

Final Fantasy games were never really PC games. I remembered that the FF7 graphics were pathetic, they were unaltered from the PS version and just didn't work. FF8 wasn't much better either. I haven't actually played FF11 yet, but I'm not expecting much from the PC version. One thing I'd like to know though is does having a keyboard make the game any easier to work, and can you get a keyboard for the PS2 that'll work with FF11.

I'd say PC simply because of all the macros you can set up, it makes partying so much simpler. The PS2 contoller simply doesn't have enough buttons for this game. Of course if you can get a keyboard for the PS2 then either one is great.

Ahaha i have the PS2 one cause im japanese but we have the macros too (^w^)b so dont wry about them but for ur questions i will have to say:
(A)i chose ps2 ver. because my ps2 is japanese and i read that the graphic is better for ps2 and the effects on the pc is better so i chose ps2 for graphics
(B)yes its really easy to control on ps2(havn't played pc so dont know about that part :) )

The main thing you need a keyboard for in this game is to talk to others, which, again, ish a huge part of the game. However, like Shizuku said, the PS2 controller can use all the macro sets as well, even more efficiently than the keyboard, as the keyboard has a 1 second delay when you press ctrl/alt to open the macro menu, while the PS2 controller can open the menu instantly. It's also fully configurable, has more than enough buttons (there's a button I don't even use~), and can supposedly use its force feedback function...though I can't seem to get that to work. =._.=;;,
Because the controller ish so compact compared to the keyboard and its many many command keys/hotkeys spread out all over it, I'd recommend using a PS2 controller even for the PC version, using a ps2-pc controller adapter ^^~.

Well you have to think about these things:
If you have a crappy computer, more of a console gamer and have a lay-zy boy chair, go for the ps2.
If you like computer chairs, badass computer and have swift-like fingers when using a keyboard then go for the pc.
....NEXT QUESTION o_o

As far as downloadable content goes, do you think that anything would be missed out on by playing it on the PS2? I'm still debating, as I don't have a computer good enough to run XI right now, and it would be cheaper to buy a harddrive for my PS2 then to buy a new computer. But I don't know.....
Maybe if I can find a wireless keyboard for the PS2, that'll sway me.
There really isn't much downloadable content... you can't modify the game in any way... just download patches and such. So I guess I don't exactly understand what you mean.
If you don't have a great computer, get it on PS2.

Well every once in awhile they add updates to download, like putting christmass lights on a bunch of trees in December. I'd assume that since you'll have the ps2 harddrive that you'll be able to download everything the pc players can.

Yes, that would be called a patch.

Uh my opinion.
I would perfer the PC over the PS2 version mostly for the hassle of trying to set stuff up together. You have to get a USB Keyboard... and if you want to type stuff, most likely you're going to be sitting down with the thing on your lap or lying down... which can be a bother sometimes.
Otherwise, PS2 is a bit more stable in terms of many things and you won't need to buy a lot of other things... except for 100 for the game, the modem, and a keyboard which you SHOULD have.

I guess what I'm trying to ask is if I'd still be able to get any and all patches that they made available if I played it on the PS2.

do you have to buy the HHD for the ps2 and if so how much will it cost and is there any extra cost for playing it aswell as the broadband fee?

The HDD comes with FFXI. It costs $99.99 USD.
And yes.

Next question: Anyone know if Square are gonna bother trying to release the game on another format? Xbox? Gamecube? Just to get it as mass multi-player as possible?
No they are not going to be releasing it on another platform.

Sony owns 40% of SQ-E, you'd think they'd let them release it on another platform?
SQ-E: Let's go release FFXI on the X-box
Sony: :notgood:
SQ-E: Awww *pouts*

holy shit thats expensive anyway i thought they were releasing FF crystal chronicals on the gamecube
They are, but that was a deal that Squeenix had with Nintendo... Square wanted to make a game for the gameboy (FFTA), and Nintendo wanted Square to make a game for the cube. So they just traded off.

Apparently they didn't on my computer then, because I have been playing it since it came out, and I have been accidentally pressing the windows key since it came out, and accidentally getting knocked off the server.
Also, don't double post... use the edit button.

Like Loki said, the windows key is quite functional, and is responsible for booting countless people when they press it accidentally.

With the controller, silly. I use a PS2 controller with the PC version, and all you have to do is choose 2 buttons to map as your ctrl/alt macros. My macro buttons are L1 (ctrl) and L2 (alt), and to switch macro sets all I have to do is hold down either button, then press up/down to cycle through the 10 sets. It's far more convenient than the keyboard, for sure.

The menu Typo was referring to is the one that appears after you press ctrl or alt. The actual menu you use to activate the macros, not the main in-game menu.

Why don't u just use a keyboard with the ps2 version as well?? I have a logitech keyboard for my ps2 and the controllers so u could set up hotkeys on the keyboard so in the game instead of using the controller and press 3 buttons at once, u could just hit one button on the keyboard. Using both properly is much more efficient then one or the other.
Can't u disable the window keys???
I would rather lay in bed and play FFXI then on a chair in front of a computer. reason one: much larger screen(i have a 27", 21", 13"(x2) tv's and a 52" HDTV), much better picture.
reason 2: A bed is more comfable.
Typing while laying down doesn't bother me at all, so its just who u r and what u like.

I'll probably get the game for PS2 when I've got the money(read:Summer), but would it be worth it to play on 56k. I'm pathetic when it comes to being up to date with technology(read:BROKE). My PC is almost five years old, still running Win98, and I don't see broadband in the near future. Anyways, aren't Macros like shortcuts or ways to put in multiple commands? I could be wrong. BTW, has anyone seen the PS2 version commercials on TV. ~EVERYTHING^XI~

Macros are shortcutted commands that you set to something like "CTRL + 1", then you press that and and it happens...
For instance, a Macro for the non-existant weapon skill "Plasma's Moogle Strike" would be something like:
/p <t> will feel my wrath! Plasma's Moogle Strike!
/ws "Plasma's Moogle Strike" on <t>
(forgive me if I'm wrong, as I don't have the actual game yet >.>)
very useful.

I own the PC version as I only own a PC and the PS2 version is not out yet in the US. However the PS2 version is bound to be more worthwhile. As this game is to be cross platform, the PS2 HAS to have all the necessary things for the game to run properly. Unlike a PC, nearly all PS2s are identical. This means there should be no crashing, no lagging, and no system requirement problems. For question # 2.... No they will most deffinently will not be releasing it on another console. Sony will simply not allow it; they basically have a mmorpg dynasty and will not be willing to let others in on this. Also they will try to make the PS2 version as comfortable as possible, because they will make more money selling the playstation version.

I'm getting it on the PS2 because I'm interested in the other and possible future uses of the HDD . Although I could get both if I'd want to, my PC is perfectly capable of running the game according to the score I get on the benchmark even if upgrading my video card wouldn't be a bad idea.
