is about the best game ever.
in fact, gamespy recently named it the best real-time-strategy-game ever (http://www.gamespy.com/top10/february04/rts/index11.shtml).
there's quite a bit of information there, there's even more on the web if you want to search for it. it's a war game, but on a massive scale- players having up to 500 units isn't at all uncommon, and sending gigantic waves of attacks will happen virtually every game.
a long, long time ago, I was listening to a conversation about Total Annihilation and Starcraft, and I think it was put best there: Starcraft is a skirmish game, Total Annihilation is a war game.
the game's actually seven years old now, but it's still insanely fun. myself, mogknight, acpo and a few others have started playing it online- and we need more people. >:O
you can probably pick it up on ebay (http://www.ebay.com) with the expansion quite cheap. or if you're on broadband and actually plan on playing it with us, I could probably arrange, uh, other means of getting you the game, if you stop by the chat.
GO GET IT. if you already have it, drop your AIM (or IRC nick) in here so we can get some games goin'.
if this gets popular enough I'll include some mini-tutorials/crash-course style things to get people started.
