When I was a child I didn't have the full appreciation for these fantastic songs that were produced for a flood of "Blacksploitaiton" films of the early 70's. This was one of them. The theme from this film, "Across 110th Street" was the perfect anthem for the time and the place the film is set in. The gorgeous orchestral backgrounds used to push the emotion of the songs accompanying the trade mark "wakka-wakka" electric guitars of soul music of the period is perfectly reflected here. The cheap production values of many of the films, hand held cameras, grainy film, bad lighting but often excellent performances of the casts were balanced in the sometimes desperate and tragic feel of the songs themselves. It was almost as if the producers and composers were reflecting the struggles of the filmmakers themselves as well as the often downbeat themes of the films.

Other soundtracks I suggest are "Shaft in Africa" with the Four Tops singing a fantastic song called "Are You Man Enough". Also check out "Come Back Charleston Blue" by Quincy Jones with Donny Hathaway, "Gordon's War", "Claudine", "Superfly" and of course "Shaft".

I had the pleasure of sitting and talking with both Anthony Quinn and we talked about it. A bit of interesting trivia was the part that Yaphet Katto played was originally intended for Bill Cosby! The film's budget suffered several cuts before production commenced and could no longer handle the hefty salary Cosby wanted among several other heavy hitters of the time. Quinn said the cast was a fine one and we would not have some of the actors that were showcased in it were it not for the film but he lamented wanting to see more experienced and well known performers in it.
