Plot summary

Genevive, 17, lives with her widowed mother, who owns an umbrella shop in Cherbourg. She and Guy, a twenty-year-old auto mechanic, are secretly in love and want to marry, but when she reveals this to her mother, her mother objects on the grounds that Genevive is too young and Guy is not mature or well-established enough, particularly since he has not yet done his required military service. Shortly after this, Guy is drafted to serve in the war in Algeria. Before he leaves, he and Genevive consummate their love for each other, which results in her becoming pregnant. While Guy is away they drift apart, and Genevive, strongly encouraged by her mother, accepts a marriage proposal from a well-to-do gem dealer named Roland Cassard, who has fallen in love with her at first sight and has promised to bring up her child as his own. (The character of Cassard is continued from Demy's earlier film Lola (1961).) Guy is wounded and is discharged before his two-year term is up, but when he returns to Cherbourg Genevive has already married and moved away. He struggles with depression and anger, but eventually is healed by falling in love with and marrying Madeleine, a young woman who had been caring for his now-deceased aunt lise. Using an inheritance from his aunt, Guy fulfills his ambition of opening a service station. Years later, the now conspicuously wealthy Genevive, traveling with her daughter, Guy's child, accidentally meet Guy at his service station. While the two have only a brief conversation about the state of their respective lives, the conversation is clearly fraught with unspoken fondness and regret.

Review by Stephen Cook
Michel Legrand's abundantly lyrical soundtrack to Jacques Demy's 1964 movie musical The Umbrellas of Cherbourg faithfully evokes the film's predominant theme of young love foiled by adult reality. The Umbrellas of Cherbourg's overriding melancholia finds a voice in two main melodic motifs Legrand uses throughout the soundtrack, the first from the Legrand jazz standard "Watch What Happens" and the second from his song "I Will Wait for You." Legrand's considerable arranging abilities are on display here as he works the recurring themes through a variety of settings: tragic duets cloaked in dramatic string passages, broken-down cabaret soliloquies, and even a tango piece la Astor Piazzolla. A prevalent jazz waltz theme also seesaws its way through the score, providing a break from the gloom. As with his later Demy soundtrack, The Young Girls of Rochefort, Legrand does integrate jazz into the mix, but not in such pervasive fashion; occasional big-band outbursts and light jazz backgrounds ultimately take a back seat to Legrand's preferred chanson mode. Combining Debussy's opaque melodies and Richard Rodgers song economy, he transforms the whimsical French song of Piaf and Trenet into petite arias. For Legrand it comes down to the song, and there are plenty of good ones on The Umbrellas of Cherbourg.

The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is a unique and, quite honestly, magical movie experience. Tough to describe, though. I mean, technically, it's a musical, but maybe it's a musical for folks who don't like musicals. I know I don't. I think I like this, though, because, in a way, the "songs" aren't really songs. Sure, the basic components of song are there, but the difference is that all of the "lyrics" are actually sung dialogue. There is no spoken dialogue and the movie never breaks out into song like traditional musicals tend to. This soundtrack is French chanson music sung in what, it turns out, is called a recitative style.

Directed by Jacques Demy with music composed by Michel Legrand, this emotional tale of love lost stars Catherine Deneuve (as Genevive, voiced by Danielle Licari) and Nino Castelnuovo (as Guy, voiced by Jos Bartel). Deneuve is absolutely luminous here. She's never been more beautiful. The Wikipedia page for this film provides an excellent synopsis, so I won't even try here. It's certainly not for everyone, but, needless to say, if you love catchy French music, heavy on the melodrama, you're apt to dig this.

Easily the best soundtrack release this film has seen is the 1996 double-disc release by Sony France. It is the complete film soundtrack and includes six non-film bonus tracks. The first is Tony Bennett's popular 1964 take on "Watch What Happens." This is followed by Michel Legrand's jazz trio take on "I Will Wait for You" from 1991. Next are what appear to be three early 1962 rehearsal tracks featuring Michel Legrand on piano, performing with his sister Christiane Legrand, who went on to provide the vocals for the character Madame Emery, played by Anne Vernon in the film. The final track is Michel Legrand Big Band's take on "I Will Wait for You" from 1995. This release has since been replaced by a shortened single disc version
