Hi,

Since about 10 days ago I'm getting a "Database error" message most times I try to reach the site, reply to something, post anything. Anybody else noted?

I'm using Firefox.

Cheers, wimpel69

Yeah, I've been getting the same problem, but on Google Chrome. Do we have to update our browsers or something?

it shouldn't have anything to do with the browsers

i made a few tweaks, let me know if you get them less

I'm still getting them left and right.

Spamming refresh seems to help at least some of the time.

EDIT: Using Firefox, by the way. Just in case that somehow winds up mattering.

I cannot use the search function any more because it shows "Database Error" every time now!

There's already a thread here (Thread 92783) to report issues.

Sarah

there's nothing wrong with posting threads for major issues. that thread's more for small hiccups.

True.

I just think it's more organized and better if issues are kept to one thread. That way staff don't have to run around from thread to thread.

Well, I don't get it as much, but whenever I try search function on the forums, I get a Database error.

I'm still using Google Chrome, does anyone else have a similar problem with other web browsers?

it's preferable this way as we notice at a glance something major is wrong.

Since you asked, the errors are happening more often for me now than before, actually preventing me from getting on the site at times. Seems if you keep trying, eventually you'll get where you want to go, but it is fairly annoying.

it is damn annoying. Sometimes I press refresh like 10 times to be able to be logged in . :/

I stopped getting the errors about 7am this morning but now the search feature doesnt work. I know threads exist but the search feature doesn't pull them up.

LeatherHead333
09-27-2012, 03:47 AM
I can't even look at my own threads anymore. Everytime i do it says "No results found" or something like that. So i have to look them all up manually which is rather annoying since most of them are buried deep in most of the threads i post in.

What was causing the database errors?

Sarah
09-27-2012, 04:04 AM
the /tmp partition was close to full which caused a lot of errors

Sorry if this sounds stupid, but is that like a storage area for forum data? What causes it to get full?

Thanks, Sarah.

So, they're temporary files, huh? I also read that they're often not preserved during reboots. However, temporary means temporary. Shouldn't they disappear on some sort of basis (daily, weekly, etc.)? Unless the reboot thing is referring to something else?

Hm. I just received a database error when I went to search the forums (What's New?). A refresh worked, though.

I still encouter them too. And a new thing.....too.

Find latest posts is not working at all. Basically says "Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms."

But it is supposed to work :/
I have been using that with a user , and so has he with me

i double checked and /tmp hasn't refilled

i ran table repairs to be safe

let me know if it helps

if it doesn't trying viewing the source when getting a database error and see if any additional information is there; paste the whole thing on pastebin.com and paste the text here

thanks ~

Well, don't count your chocobos just yet - I just got a fatal error when browsing the FFXI section, after I'd just deleted a whole heap of adbot spam:

Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded in /home/forums/public_html/includes/class_bbcode.php on line 3085

I'm starting to think this forum software is barely keeping itself together. :(

It's not the software. Something's probably just not set right.

Sarah

that's not related to the database exactly. the execution time may have been long because the search index was being rebuilt

pretty sure the db problems are all fixed though

Well, I have no idea what the exact cause of it is, but I'm still having trouble browsing in the FFXI section Sarah - I can view threads fine when I'm not logged in, but when I am logged in and try clicking on any thread in the FFXI section, it hangs and then throws up that error I posted in my previous post. The problem only started when I deleted that mass of spam that is plaguing the FFXI section the other day. I even tried merging the spam together to just one or two threads but it still didn't make any difference sadly. :(

Also unfortunately, due to being only a mod I can't hard delete the spam either, so either I have to put up with 25+ spam threads about handbags and ugg boots clogging the forum, or hopefully someone can find a fix for this, as not being able to browse a section of the forum I moderate isn't a good thing. :p

Have you tried clearing your browser's data (cookies, cache, etc.)?

Enkidoh
10-04-2012, 06:17 PM
To be honest Amaury, that thought did in fact cross my mind, but I'm reluctant to clear out Firefox's cache due me often needing to backtrack through my history to find a page I need but couldn't remember the URL for nor find through regular searching. But it's worth a try anyway.

Sarah
10-04-2012, 10:23 PM
it has nothing to do with your browser.

i can look into changing the max execution time but it's kind of a balancing act-- too high and load times could get higher for everyone. in the meantime though try deleting just a few threads at once

there's also a "delete as spam" checkmark that deletes all other posts/threads by that user :)

Answered with a certain "hit the fly dude" and getting to the point that was in original thought pointed out for a question.
Question that, which still needs an answer.

So, who will give me rep points form my stupid poem? XDXD

not sure how a technical description helps anything but okay xD

mysql has a max number of connections set so the server doesn't become flooded and unreachable. you have to balance that number high enough to prevent the server's load average from going through the roof while still allowing the appropriate number of connections for the forums and other websites-- this had to be tweaked again as it was too low

Ah, I see.

I get the general meaning of what you're saying, and I think I can explain it with an example, so let me know if I'm understanding right. :)

When roads get rainy, especially if it hasn't rained for a while, or snowy and icy, you have to adjust your driving and give more space between you and the vehicle ahead of you, etc., because if you drive like you do on clear roads, there's a chance you could get into a collision, especially with snow and ice.
