Film Synopsis:

This lavish historical drama based on the acclaimed novel by Rose Tremain won Oscars for Costume Design and Art Direction. Robert Downey, Jr. stars as Robert Merivel, a gifted medical student of the 17th century who ignores his studies in favor of pursuing debauched fun -- much to the consternation of his high-minded Quaker colleague John Pearce (David Thewlis).

Merivel achieves the high societal status he covets when he's summoned by King Charles II (Sam Neill). Merivel is chagrined to find that he's expected to care for the king's ailing Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, but the dog rallies and Merivel joins court. When one of Charles' mistresses, Celia (Polly Walker) becomes uppity, Charles arranges her marriage to Merivel.

In return for keeping Celia in a pretend marriage, he receives an estate and knighthood. Merivel, however, falls in love with Celia and, betrayed by an eccentric painter (Hugh Grant), inspires the king's wrath. Banished and stripped of his wealth,

Merivel rediscovers love with an Irish mental patient (Meg Ryan). He also rediscovers his passion for medicine during London's Great Fire and the Black Plague.

It was this film upon viewing it in late 1997 that convinced me to acquire a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel whom were made famous by King Charles II portrayed in this film by Sam Neill.

My dog Lucky came from Ireland, the breeders of these dogs in the UK are of the highest standards compared to here in the States where they are not breed with such strict standards and love.

As we are all aware life is truly a journey a life fraught with both happiness and despair, love and hate and all the other emotions that flow around and over us on this path we travel.

Life is finite and must end, for some it ends earlier than others and for those the passing stings like a cold wintry breeze.

My beloved Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Lucky traveled a long road with me and comforted me with unconditional love, never judging me or my actions and standing steadfastly by my side through all things great and small.

His journey with me was blessedly not a short one, but indeed a long one, but his passing on September 17th, 2012, was still no less painful.

With heavy heart and soul I dedicate this soundtrack to my dog Lucky.

Lucky Dawg (1998-2012)
