John Williams talks to Classic FM in exclusive interview - (320)
23rd August 2012, 13:50

"As Mister Williams became older and older it is a great time to have a lot of celebration of is work."

John Williams has revealed the secrets of his life and career in a candid and exclusive interview with Classic FM. John Williams spoke to Classic FM in a career retrospective interview that was broadcast on Monday August 27th at 8pm. Williams spoke to film music expert Tommy Pearson exclusively about his life and work, from composing the music for E.T. (“It was very difficult to get the music right…”) to working with Alfred Hitchcock and Steven Spielberg.

In the generous interview, which you can listen to below, John Williams talks candidly about the writing process and what it was like creating scores for some of the biggest and most iconic movies of all time. He also reveals his anxieties about his creativity, commenting: “It’s my character to never to be completely satisfied and always be at least 10% insecure about whether I have got the things right.”

He also spoke fondly about composing the scores to Jurassic Park and Schindler’s List at the same time, why more opera composers should have written sequels and why he still writes with paper and pencil. Offering a summary of his life and work, he added: “I am really one of the most fortunate people on Earth.”

I hope those Media Ventures hacks are listening to this and shifting uncomfortably in their seats, humiliated by Williams' erudite class. It brings Henry Jackass' "That's not a f**king theme, that's the f**king bassline!" into sharp relief. John Williams; a musician; musically educated, musically fluent, musically mature.

Very very cool. Thank you so much! Does anyone have any other interviews like this with composers?

WTF? That's not hardly a nice thing to say... nothing wrong with getting older, but still a very odd way of saying something!

Thanks for the share!

Well, it's a sad fact that Williams won't be around forever - and at the age of eighty, as they say, every day is a bonus. I think that was a way of saying (albeit indelicately) that is career has been so long and fruitful that it was appropriate to combine that with his birthday (a milestone age) and have a big celebration.

Though I agree, it does come over a little as "Amazing he's still alive so we'd better interview him now before it's too late" - but I don't think that was the intention.

A technical question. How do you get this at 320 kilobits per second? I also managed to record this programme on Classic FM DAB digital radio, which broadcasts at MP3-160 in the UK. I copy to a memory card via a timer.

The streaming is recorded from a PC to an other PC (or Mac) the sound is recorded via AUDACITY in WAV 48Hz file or AIFF format. These high quality files are converted in mp3 after this with MPEG Streamclip software.

I did a .cue file for easier access that can be checked out here (http://pastebin.com/Hs0Nzkx4) or downloaded here (http://pastebin.com/download.php?i=Hs0Nzkx4). To make it work, save the text file in the same folder as the mp3, and rename it to

Classic FM Interview - 23rd August 2012.cue
If you changed the mp3 filename, edit also the 5th line and the .cue filename accordingly. Then try dragging the .cue or .mp3 to your player.

Please, let me know about any error.
