The game release in Japan known as Final Fantasy VI was released first in America as Final Fantasy III for the SNES. They're the same game, it's just that the numbering system was different (III was the third American FF to be released, whereas Japan had had six released.)
The numbering system changed when VII came out and was known as VII throughout the globe.
FFVI was later re-released in America for the PSX, as part of the Anthology (I think...) Anyways, the only true difference between FF6(Japanese) and FF3 (American) is the name of the game. If you want to get info on the game, where better to look than the Shrine?

Final Fantasy 6 on the PSX is basically identical to Final Fantasy 3 on the SNES. There was no real difference... but compared to the Japanese versions, there were several name changes (Terra was known as Tina in the Japanese version.)
and the cut-scenes were re-done in CG

Okay...
Final fantasy III in the USA is Final fantasy VI in the UK and Japan, so if Final Fantasy III in the UK and Japan was never released released in the USA, what was final fantasy I and II in USA called?
And how come everyone thinks that the official final fantasy III in USA and Japan is final fantasy VI when its actually final fantasy III as in an independant game too final fantasy VI!!
Confused.. :whatever:

Right now it's not the matter of calling it "USA" or "UK" anymore. But to answer your question.
1, 4 and 6 came out in the US before the PSone ever came out with FF7. The rest never made it here (2, 3 and 5) before the PSibe.
However, they were renamed to account for the missing FF's.
I hope that answers your question. >:

I'm sorry about this, I know I'm nit-picking here. But has anyone else noticed that the release date for the Japanese PSX version is wrong on that link Bahamut ZERO put up?

How come they wont re-release the orginal final fantasy 3 (not the final fantasy 3 thats final fantasy 6 in the USA) on the PSX, just because some stoopid american might get confused with the title
-no offence-

I don't think that's the reason, Alpott, because they did release Final Fantasy II despite the danger that people could confuse it with Final Fantasy IV.
I guess it's Square's little secret. Or maybe they are clueless which game to remake along with Final Fantasy III...?

I wonder why they can't just include Secret of Mana with FF3? I loved SoM!

Why not release FFIII in Europe with Chrono Trigger?
Tokiko

Release Chrono Trigger with Chrono Cross in Europe, and Seiken Densetsu 3 with Legend of Mana.
Final Fantasy III with Final Fantasy Tactics, or something like that. There's lots missing in Europe.

Chrono Trigger is already on FFChronicles with FFIV in the U.S...
Releasing CT with FFIII in Europe may cause Lavos to come out of the Earth and destroy us all!

I know that, geez. I was talking about Europe, and it's really absolutely irrelevant that CT was released with FFIV in America. In Europe FFIV was released with FFV, so there. Europe still lacks CT.

I know that Europe is lacking CT.
And I was just pointing out FFChronicles, because maybe not everyone knows about that game

FF:WQ was the only FF I ever at any point found easy, even when I'm dangerously underleveled. Waste of time.
I've played through and beaten every FF game released. This includes the NES FFI-III, the SNES IV-VI, the PSX VII-IX, and FFX-X2.
These are the mainstream FF...I still have yet to beat FFTA, but I shall soon!
Once I get some batteries.

summary. I dont know enuogh about european to include, so some one else can do that.
------------------
Final Fantasy I Jp = Final Fantasy I US(released on NES originally) (rereleased on psx, and soon to be on GBA; with FFII as FFO)
------
Final Fantasy II Jp = Final Fantasy II US(released on psx and soon to be on GBA; with FFI as FFO)(not released on NES)
-------
Final Fantasy III Jp = Final Fantasy III US(not released on NES or psx. US release is still unknown)
------
Final Fantasy IV Jp = Final Fantasy II US(originally on snes) which now = Final Fantasy IV US (rereleased on psx as FFIV with CT as FFC)
-------
Final Fantasy V jp = Final Fantasy V US(not originally released on snes)(released on psx with FFVI US psx release as FFA)
------
Final Fantasy VI jp = Final Fantasy III US(originally released on snes) which now = Final Fantasy VI US(rereleased with FFV on psx as FFA)
------
Final Fantasy VII jp = Final Fantasy VII US, and so on. you all know the rest from here on.
------
FFO = Final Fantasy Origins; FFI & FFII(US)
FFC = Final Fantasy Chronicles; FFIV & CT(US)
FFA = Final Fantasy Anthology; FFV & FFVI(US)
------
FFIV jp = FFII snes version and FFIV psx version
FFVI jp = FFIII snes version and FFVI psx version
---
So the only game that hasn't been correctly re/released in the US is FFIIjp.
-----
So all in all, everything up to this point in the number ordering of the FF series is corrected by Square. So if you are confused, I hope this faq helped.
If i made any mistakes, just correct them please.
