After several false starts I've finally managed to convert the (almost complete) soundtrack to LucasArts' space simulator "TIE Fighter" from MIDI to audio, in a quality I'm actually quite happy with. The biggest chunk missing is the inflight music, which is very difficult to arrange as it consists of dozens of little snippets that get arranged in realtime during the game.
Still, Kusi81 did a great job with his inflight medley Ode to Tie (
http://soundcloud.com/kusi81/ode-to-tie-x-6-game-tie), which right now is at version X-6. Looks like he's going to improve on it further. It's a great addition to my soundtrack!
I've used East West Quantum Leap Orchestra, East West Hollywood Brass and Garritan Personal Orchestra 4 in conjuction with Cockos' Reaper for this.
The original soundtrack was composed by Michael Land, Clint Bajakian and Peter McConnell, using both original music and themes by John Williams.

It's very cool that you did this, Laserschwert. When I first listened to that title music, I seriously thought an orchestra was playing it, haha. And I understand about the inflight music; I've had the midi soundtrack to this game forever and always wondered why the inflight music wasn't there, and I couldn't for the life of me even remember what it sounded like, until finally I stumbled across it in a YouTube video, and I just thought "Good God, how did I ever play this game without punching out my speakers!?" I guess it wasn't so bad if you were just, like, flying around at the end of a mission when nothing was happening, but the music cues every time a ship jumped in or out or launched from a Star Destroyer or got destroyed or anything... very cacophonous. Thanks again. :D

Then there was X-WING and DARK FORCES ;-). Would you be interested in doing those one day? I know DARK FORCES was rearranged before, but I think sample libraries have improved greatly over the years.

I've added a link to a medley of inflight music to the opening post... I'd say it fits my soundtrack well!
Also, I'm not yet sure what comes next, as the existing rearragend version of "Dark Forces" is already very good. We'll see.

I'm going to download this right now. Have you done an orchestrated version of X-Wing?

Have you done an orchestrated version of X-Wing?Nope, this is my first and it took a few months on and off... a lot of learning. Now I need a break before I make another one ;)

Laserschwert, it seems like you've made your own version of the original music that was in the game. Does it sound the same as the original music? I don't have the game which is why I'm asking as I'm only interested in music that was in the game, not re-arranged music.
I was just wondering why you went to all the effort, couldn't you just have played the MIDI on your PC and "recorded what you can hear" using Audacity for example? Or you could have just plugged the speaker line-out into your line-in port and recorded that.

It does sound VERY different from what's in the game. Although technically it's wrong to call it a re-arrangement, since the arrangements haven't changed (since I've used the game's MIDI files for these). However, if you're after how it sounded with Adlib music back then, you'd be better off with TopDollar's rip (
Thread 55612) of the game's music (which isn't online right now, it seems).
My version is more the "possibly intended" sound of the music, because if they had the ability to use a real orchestra when the game came out (and managed to make it work with iMuse), they'd probably gone that route.
Anyway, a lot more effort went into the making of this than just "press play and record". ;)

Laserschwert, I thought I've seen your screen name over at Lucasforums a few days ago. Any chance of your version of the soundtrack making it into a mod?

I have no idea... I've never been into modding, nor do I plan to ;)
