^what tango says, windows media player isn't the only player out there... foobar, winamp, etc, you know...

You shouldn't even be using WMP anyways. Get Winamp for the audio, then get Windows Media Player Classic for videos and you will be golden.

Doublehex

That's when you go ahead and change the default file opener in the properties.

I'm just saying if they have time to do FLAC and OGG they could do a MP3 one too.... not everyone likes or wants to use FLAC/OGG

Infernus Animositas

MP3 is an outdated lossy codec. The sound quality is substantially better with OGG and that's why I use it.

I try to release the highest quality rips in whichever formats I choose (FLAC or OGG). If you don't like the format I upload, feel free to transcode it yourself :)

KAITO

That's only slightly better and also flac cannot be read by iPhone/itouch cause flac ain't compatible with apple devices. I might as well wait for my DD ost I ordered to come in the post then copy it... I would use a flac to mo3 converter but some of these program's have hidden program's

cooljacker
05-25-2012, 09:27 AM
^Then I assume you never heard of ALAC which is Apple's FLAC equivalent, if you insist on Apple products that much... Also I don't understand what's hidden? There are so many simple audio converters out there... If you think iTunes software is the ultimate one, you're (very) wrong. Broaden your view a bit, that's all.

i like listening to music on my mp3 player which is a iphone... why buy a sperate mp3 player just for one album or more in flac? i don't sit at my computer listening to music all day

MP3 is an outdated lossy codec. The sound quality is substantially better with OGG and that's why I use it.

OGG is not a codec; it's a container. The audio inside it is called Vorbis - which is also an outdated lossy codec - and its sound quality benefits in comparison MP3 are only really realised at lower bitrates. At higher bitrates Vorbis and MP3 are about even. That said, there's nothing wrong with Vorbis other than that most devices can't play it.

I absolutely agree with your wish to upload the highest possible quality... but I feel like the benefits of Vorbis may not justify the numerous problems. Particularly when you encode Vorbis at such a high bitrate; all the drawbacks of lossy encoding, at a bitrate not far off straight lossless.

Of course folk can transcode to whatever they like - but in all honesty and with the greatest respect, I think that Vorbis uploads might not be beneficial to anybody. The sensible standard at the moment seems to be a lossless FLAC encode and a LAME -V0 encode (VBR ~240kbps) for portable use or folk who don't want FLAC.

Not trying to get at you; just some opinions which you should feel free to ignore if you so desire. :)

Thank you for this rip - I'm not enjoying the score though there are some good moments. Since the CD has yet to materialise online (as far as I know) this is most, most welcome. :)

Negima: Don't you think it's worth your while learning how to transcode, rather than restricting your downloads by refusing to take anything in any format other than the ones you're used to? FLAC to ALAC is easy. FLAC to MP3 is easy.

The uploaders of music generally try to provide the highest possible quality (lossless) and usually select a format which is universally compatible (FLAC) to make it easy for downloaders to create whatever they need.

It's not hard to learn. Foobar2000 is excellent, free, and there are so many guides available online you'll have no chance of getting it wrong. :)
