I'm not sure exactly how much data minidiscs can hold (I think it's around 100 meg or so... Haven't really checked that closely), but don't you think that they could be used to, say, store game data? I only ask, because I'm curious as to why Nintendo haven't tried to create games on Minidiscs and further decrease the size of their handheld consoles and increase the size of the game that can be sold?
I'm also curious as to if Sony have a similar idea for the handheld console they plan to release.
It's interesting that the technology's been there for a while, but no-one's really thought about using it. Do you guys think minidisc / small CD based handheld consoles would catch on or not?

i cant quote directly or even list my source for this, though i think i saw it on the techtv channel, but i heard/read/something that sony was considering going to minis for future systems. dont they hold even more data than normal discs?
i think that might be a neat idea. **pictures gameboy-esque sony console** i might buy it--if it existed that is.
I have seen something like this before. Something that looked similar to a gameboy advanced SP... but there was a lid in the back similar to a psx that opened and a minidisc was played on it. I believe I saw it on TechTV also, but I don't remember who it was made by. I think it was just a prototype anyways.
I think the main problem people would have with this is moving around and such with your gameboy while playing a game. They would have to have a lot of anti-shock protection. I mean we all know how much it screws up your game if you shake your playstation vigorously while playing, because we've all been there....
... we have all done that right?

You have a valid point Loki... The judder motion on a train or in a car that destroys a game you painstakingly played on for an hour or so to get to that point would annoy the crap out of me. I'm also thinking that saving data would be tricky. A compact flash card within the handheld console could provide up to 256 meg of space to solve that though, so it isn't all bad...
Hmm... I wonder if this DOES have potential. I also wonder if I can change my idea for my final year project...

I think I remember reading an article that Sony are creating a disc that can hold upto 1.4Gb, the disc size it's self being about the same size of a MiniDisc. There is a name for this disc, but that I cannot remember.
And off MiniDisc realted news, Sony are creating another type of disc that will be able to hold upto 23.3Gb.
Looks like Sony are quite busy in the data storage department
