Greetings.

Well, the other thread I started, was basically a 'Which next gen console do you lie the best?' Humph, should've said that in the beginning. Oh well, who cares.

Point of this one, similar to the other, but based on the old school consoles.

NES - First console I ever got, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was the very first game I ever got. Years later, I tracked down a fully functioning NES and bought it for a steal. Fav game - Wizards & Warriors III - Kuros, Visons of Power.

SNES - This console ROCKS!! Look at all the great games for it, which are totally awesome!! Hell, I still have my faithfull SNES, with a heap of great games (Star Wars, Empire strikes back, Breath of Fire II, Magic Sword, Cybernator, Lost Vikings, FF II (IV), FF III (VI), etc, etc)

N64 - Alright in the beginning, but in my mind, died at the end, with all the Pokemon games and such for it. Still, Rogue Squadron and Mario Kart 64 are great, but Goldeneye 007 is the BEST shooter I've played, and even now, can still stand against some shooters available now.

Sega Master System I and II - Good console, and games were fun and fulfilling. Particularly the Asterix games. Heh.

Sega Megadrive I and II - A lot of great games here, and still a gem to have.

Sega Mega-CD - Great for one game, SONIC CD. As well as the Lunar games.

Sega Saturn - First 32 bit console (I'm not including the 32 bit add on for the Megadrive). Great games were born on this console, and then 'beefed up' and ported to others. Also, a lot of fun and hilarious games, as well as shooters and RPG's. The three Neon Genesis Evangelion games for it, are quirky little titles (Yes, I have them as well.)

Sony Playstation - Apparently, this was based on the rumoured CD drive for the SNES (look under a SNES, and there's a little latch which comes away, a serial port or something. The CD drive was to hook to the SNES through this.), although I'm not too sure about that. This one had it all, great games, graphics etc, etc. And a heap of RPG's, my fav gaming genre.

In my opinion, they are all great consoles, and, as you all have no doubt guessed, I do have these consoles, as well as the next gen consoles as well. What can I say, I'm a collector.

My own personal favs? The Sega Saturn, Playstation and SNES, for one thing, great selection of thoroughly entertaining games.

So, which is your fav? (And guess what? This is a multiple choice poll as well, so have fun and indulge yourself. Remember, say which one/ones are your fav, and why?)

When you get down to it, it's between the SNES and the Megadrive, which were the two closest matched consoles ever, and with the greatest catalogue of games ever. Mario Vs Sonic. Zelda Vs Wonderboy. And it's too hard to pick a winner between the two of them. You might as well flip a coin.

I have never been big on the sega systems... and I don't consider Playstation or N64 Old school sistems, so I am going to say SNES because I feel like there were so many great series that were just built on this system, and so many great games.

The Playstation has the biggest (I think) Selection of RPG's on any console, so I love it of course, and would choose it over the SNES any day... but I don't really think it is old school

The N64 had a few REALLY PERFECT games: Mario Kart 64, Ocarina of Time, Goldeneye and Perfect Dark, WWF No Mercy (The best wrestling game of all time), and I've always loved Conker's Bad Fur Day. I love my N64 and continue to play it.

Over all though the SNES has the biggest selection of good games I think: FF2, FF3 for U.S. Breath of Fire 2, Mario RPG, Mario World, Zelda: Link to the past, Donkey Kong Country, Super Metroid... god so many good games... so it gets my vote.

Well, the only thing we ever owned was a NES, then later a PSX... so of course it's SNES~
Reasons: Secret of Mana, Super Mario Kart. That's about all. My life was sad.

I absolutely adore the SNES due to great games such as Zelda: A Link to the Past (my first RPG), Killer Instinct, Super Street Fighter, Super Mario All Stars + World, Yoshi's Island...and so much more~ (I cannot think of any others)

Fair enough the PSX has it's fair share of great games, heck FFVII would never have existed if it weren't for that. My question is...should it really be considered as an 'old school' console now?

I've owned a nes, snes, genesis, playstation, and n64. Out of those I like the snes and playstion the most, the colony wars games were great. I'm a bit dissapointed that youleft out the coleco vision, nothing beats the manic depresive smurfs game, ah the memorys.

i just gotta say, im a Sonic fan, well was, he was the greatest, beats Mario anyday, so i was a sega fan until ps1 came out and then i went 2 that and started on FF games and forgot all about Sonic and tails etc, even tho i go back 2 them sometimes and still play the game, which still rules, but is nothing 2 FF games these days

Super Famicom all the way!!! There were some of the greatest titles of all time on this beauty. A plethora of RPG's come to mind... FFII(IV), FFIII(VI), ChronoTrigger, Secret of Mana, MarioRPG all from Square, Lufia and LufiaII, Breath of FireI&II, Zelda: a Link to the Past, and Earthbound. Other genre games represented as well, such as Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat, the Mario Worlds, Mario Kart and F-Zero, Super Punch Out, the Donkey Kong Country series, its own serving of MegaMan, Ogrebattle, and of course Super Metroid. Like I said, a lot of great classics.
Now I mean no direspect to the other systems, for some of them I never really had a chance to play. Sega definately had a lot of good games itself from Sonic to... well I never really played it much but someone did. The original Famicom deserves its place as well for as much reason as the SNES. Heck, it's home to the orignators of so many popular series that I would say video games today would be nowhere without the little 8-bit gem.
As for the N64 and PS0 I don't yet consider them old-school as many others have said. I'd say it takes 2 generations of removal to be "old school." And on a side-note, there are still PS0 games being released in '03.

So I would have to say either NES or SNES...
NES games were just fun and awesome, and had some of my fave. games - FF, DuckHunt, Super Mario 1-3...

SNES was also very kewl! and also has some of my fave. games! - FF4-6, Super Mario RPG, SM All Stars, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana [Seieken Densetsu 2], etc...

I have owned every single console on the list xD. My favourite consoles were the NES, SNES and N64. That was back when Nintendo could make decent games that didn't take ten minutes to complete �_� .

Overall, it's gotta be the SNES. Yoshi's Island, Secret of mana, FF, Super mario world, Pop 'n Twinbee, Donkey Kong (1! Before they got shit)... I could go on forever.

The SNES rules and it was the best there was, and still can compete as a time consuming console.

No offence to the one who started this post but how can you say that the PS is old school. Thats like the present day computer for some, and it is not old school, neither is the N64.

Both consoles might be old but trust me they are not old school. Maybe in another five years but not yet. They're still quite new computers for a few people and shouldn't have been on the list.

I loved Streets Of Rage on the Mega Drive and the X-men Games on MG.
But SNES rules with Mario and Yoshi game. MarioWorld i think, and SuperMetroid with Samus Aran. And not forgetting Killer Instinct or Street Fighter. All classic games and well worthy to be called old school games.

Mega Drive was the best. it was just the one that was far more enjoyable to play. MOST people haven't even played it, so they just choose SNES (oh yeah, I was RAISED on SNES but i don't know anything about sega lololol 0_@ ;), which makes me sad (sad :() cos it really was the superior console. Well, it had the best platformers, and the more interesting RPGs - not the best ones, but they were more original. Oh, and don't be RIDICULOUS, Sonic beats Mario any day - don't get me wrong, I love the Mario series as much as the Sonic series, but Mario just isn't cool. He's a fat plumber for fucks sakes. Sonic would beat him, and is way.. well, cooler. That's just blatantly obvious. To say anything else about the characters is just really, really stupid.

As far as I'm concerned, if you haven't PLAYED all the consoles you're not FIT to make a proper jusgement. =/

As for what I own... At the moment, I have a SNES, N64, Mega Drive, PSX, and Saturn. I've played NES and the Sega CD and owned a Master System for a while. Still working on acquiring them, though. =/

(er, on an aside, I actually don't hate the people who chose the SNES, because it's very close, it's the ones who asay SNES IS THE BEST but know nothing about the md.. which.. irk me...)

Duo, I have the MD and SNES and I like both of them, don't get me wrong but i just love the SNES more. It is the far superior console.

You got ur point with Mario being fat, whatever but did you ever think about Sonic being a spikey hedgehog who only runs fast!! DULLNESS OR WHAT? All Sonic does is run fast, Mario's got the Fire-Flower and Mushroom aspect of the game and all Sonic does for a living is collect rings, BORING!!
Mario is better and I think the MD is a great console but SNES handsdown . . .

Firstly, Milliardo (Sorry I'm focusing on you, but you were the last to raise this point.), the reason I put the N64 and PSX here as old school, was because I consider them to be old school. Nowadays, lots of people I know have one of two of the newer consoles (IE, XBOX, PS2 and Gamecube), so I placed the N64 and PSX in the old school category.

Weh you think about, the PSX is an old console nowadays (I am not including the PSOne. It's too damn small and ugly looking with the monitor attachment. YUCK!), being around for nearly, and I'm saying NEARLY, 7 years. Most game consoles have a 'life', if you will, of five years in the sun, then fade away into darkness.

Not to say I don't enjoy my PSX. After all, I'm towards the end of playing Persona (And stuck BIG time in it.), and I truly do enjoy the console. When it was released, it set the standard (So to speak) for all the new consoles. One gripe I do have, is no longer cartridge based. Before some people flame me, let me have my say. The cartridge based games were extremely good and had an advantage over the CD consoles. You can burn a PSX, PS2, DC, etc games onto a CD-R, but tell me, can you burn a cartridge onto a CD? I do know there was some technology like that floating around, but never even saw one.

The cartridge's were more sturdier and couldn't really break as easily as a CD. Also, care wise, a cartridge was easier to look after, while with CD's.... You know what care you have to exercise.

Still, these consoles are great, for they have all set the standard for the next in the line. Master System 1/2 - Mega Drive (Genesis) 1/2. NES - SNES. etc, etc. And to me, that's what makes them what they are, great reminders of what we used to play and enjoy (and in some cases still do enjoy. :) ) and I think it's nice to go back and play something, you haven't played in ages, to reminisce (SP?). Then again, I'm just an old guy (25 - Ancient! LOL), and I like them.

and an opinions an opinion but if ya really think about it, if it was old school would they still be making games for the PS (not mentioning N64 coz I haven't seen a new game on that for quite some time!! lol!!) They put the newest FIFA on it and these new dance games for the PS

I have a Sony Playstation and a Sega Genesis. Both are pretty awesome with great games. I love the Genesis's Streets of Rage and Sonic the Hedgehog games. I'm hoping that someone makes Streets of Rage for the PS2 and I'm looking forward to Sonic Heroes although the game could be awesomer if you can mix and match your own teams.

Okay, so maybe the PSX and the N64 aren't "old" old school, but they are still yesterday's news now that the PS2, Xbox and Gamecube are all around �150 or less. The PSX will still have life for kids, say, and Sony would be wise to tailor for kids at this time in order to extend the PSX as long as they can (and let's face it, the PSX is one of the most successful marketing strategies and consoles ever.)

I prefer to divide the genre of gaming into four regions, really. The 8 Bit Region (NES, Master System, Gameboy, Game Gear), the 16 Bit Region (SNES, Megadrive, Atari Console, etc), the CD revolution (PSX, N64, Saturn), and the DVD/CD revolution (PS2, Gamecube, Xbox, Dreamcast, etc.)

But hey, that's just me, and it's a tad off topic. It's six of one and half a dozen of the other as to what's old school or not.

Yes, Mario seems to have more .... aspects in it, to vary the play. But Sonic also has the chaos emeralds, super sonic, and when you get to Sonic 3 and S&K, there's the way they lock together and such. =) Honestly, I think it's a personal thing. They're both excellent games. The only real deciding factor is your own taste, in the end.

And I respect that you prefer SNES to MD. That's cool. It's people who don't know anything about one console and just choose the other one that irritate me. ;)

Snes. I've been getting games non stop for the system for years and still haven't run out of games to buy for it. Just got one in the mail today.


On the great mario vs sonic debate of our youth:


Mario games are better than Sonic. Sonic 2 isn't even a good game at all, and Yoshi's Island tops all of them. However, it doesn't really matter. There are so many great platformers on the SNES that the old MD - bless its heart! - has to take its sonics and pulsemen and hide in the corner. However, Ristar is good enough to shun its MD breathren and kick back at the party with all the cool games on the SNES.




No, seriously, the MD is a neat little system. I notice the PC Engine isn't on the list of systems though.

how dare you not have the nomad! that would have to be my fav simply because it is a mobile genesis. but it sucked AAs like they were water. for those of you who dont know what a nomad is, it is a handheld system that could use the sega genesis cartidges, i came with a battery pack that held 6 AA bateries and depleted them in about an hour and a half of continuous play. the power cable for the genesis could be used for it though.

Sorry for forgetting the Nomad. Thing is, I also forgot to put the Spectrum and Milton Bradley's game console, the Vectrex (Which I still have, in full working condition and about eight games with it.).

My mind doesn't function properly around this time of year. Then again, I don't think it does anytime. LOL
