Greetings.
I can't remember if there was a thread like this before or not. If so, you'll have to forgive my lapse in memory.
In any event, which of the following is your favourite console?
Sega Dreamcast, Sony Playstation 2, Microsoft X-Box or the Nintendo Gamecube.
Personally, my favourite is and always will be, the Sega Dreamcast. Even though there weren't many games released for it (Here in AUS, that were any good that is), there were some definite gems. Shenmue 1 and 2, Skies of Arcadia, Sword of the Berzerk, Grandia II, Daytona USA, Record of Lodoss War, Dead or Alive 2, Sonic Adventure, Crazy Taxi 1 and 2 and Wacky Races. These are great games on what a lot of people (A lot I know.) consider to be a bad console.
Still, I like my Dreamcast and the games for it, and that's all I care about, yes?
Has to be Sony. The PS2 just has so many good games, and they just keep coming. I also love the multiplayer games on Gamecube, but overall PS2 gets my vote for the FF series, Xenosaga, MGS2, Devil may Cry, Dark Cloud, GTA3 and god so many more.... plus it plays dvds also.

I think I'd have to make a tie between DC and PS2 here...I like the GC, but I don't own it and therefore don't know all of its awesomeness..which is alright.
Like Loki pointed out, Ps2 has some of the best games/series ever...there's really no reason (in my opinion) to hate the PS2.
The DC was such a short-lived system but so great...classics like MvC 1 & 2, DoA2, Shenmue...and who could forget, one of the greatest games of time, Jet Grind Radio. The DC has definitely been a great part of VG history, and even to this day, it's capabilities are mind-blowing.
So...if I could vote for both, I would, but I can't so..yeh...tie on these two for me. =B

Easy peasy the PS2

I'm gonna have to say the PS2 as well. Why? Because it's the one I actually went to the shop to and paid cash for. I played briefly on the XBox, but bar Project Gotham Racing in four player mode, I wasn't really that interested. The Dreamcast had some good games, but it sat in our lounge during the second year mostly unused when James "borrowed" it off of a mate for the whole year. And I didn't even consider touching the Gamecube despite the cheapness in its price.
The PS2, however, had FFX, MGS2 and Gran Turismo 3 as starting games for me, and that was enough for me to buy it.

Easily the PS2 because well it's proof that hardware isn't always best. The games on it are easily the best, plus it's the only console getting MGS3, YEAH!!!!
Yeah until they make Metal Gear Solid 3: Substance for X-box.
The reason why I will not even consider buying an X-box is because nearly every game on the system you can get for the PC or PS2 .

Seeing as it is only consoles I'll have to say the PS2, even though I don't yet own one. I've got the ole PSX for now and that system still is the $#!%. Next, I'd go with gamecube because, face it, it is not a kiddy system and I hate it when people say that. Great games that you cant get anywhere else. Never had a Dreamcast and I feel that I missed out. Lastly is the Xbox, Its got pretty graphics and some ok games but it hasn't really put out anything that I've just gotta play, besides,my brother's got one and its not that great. Of course PC's are a must, but they are not consoles are they. By the way, you should have put some of the older systems on there DH. Nintendo Entertainment System A.K.A Famicom, enough said.
But I digress, let me get back to what I really think is the best. It's not a console and it's not a PC, it's my handy go anywhere GBA. Yes the little handheld is my favorite out of anything out there today. I've gon through cases of batteries and worn out plenty of baterry pacs with my little pocket player. And now I've got the gameboy player attatchment for my gamecube so I can play anytime I want. I get addicted to the games spending hours and at times days with a title. And with all the retrogames coming out I'll be sticking with this one a long time.

Very very touch choice.... lets see....
Dreamcast is good in it's right because it generally rocks with hardcore gaming stuff. Fighting games and anime-ish games up the wazoo with that. It also featured a bit of online gaming.
PS2 is good because it has a large abundance of games that are pretty damn good in their own right. Final Fantasy and Metal Gear for example. Same with DC, has online gaming compatibility.
Gamecube is good because of it's many good games though not as much or not as known as the PS2 games. Game's such as F-Zero, Animal Crossing, Legend of Zelda, Viewtiful Joe, etc etc etc are great games in their own right. The only gripe with the Gamecube is that there is only one game that supports online play, the rest are LAN suppported.
Xbox is good for really two things... FPS's and online play. That deserves a spot in my room already. Other bonuses include harddrive additions like installing the game in the HD so it loads faster and adding a custom soundtrack with your music CD's. Best thing about it though is mostly online.

Dreamcast by far. All the great platformers, puzzle games, fighters, and even Fire Pro! I LOVE THIS SYSTEM. I play it every day. Marvel vs. Capcom 2, Chu Chu Rocket, and FPWD. :o~~ There were only a few games made for that system that were actually bad.
It was the next gen system, and still is. Online play just hit the newer consoles a few months ago. It hit DC 4 years ago.
AND IT PLAYS EMULATORS, MP3'S, AND VIDEOS! It's totally awesome. If you could find the games, you could even burn them without cost.
The PS2 had some good games (as did the Gamecube), but the bad outnumber the good. DC owns on every level.

PS2 without a doubt.
X-Box while technologically superor...has just a crappy game library. Nintendo's GameCube, while not as powerful, holds a bit more quality games.
However, PS2 is were most of the popular, ground breaking, and artistic games come out of. It not only has better games, it has more variety of games, and just more games in general.

Shut up PS2 people. I may be an irate Sega fascist (though obviously not, since I won so many consoles :)) but the Dreamcast is clearly the best. Not technologically, but in terms of games. It didn't have MANY games, but it had SO many good ones. It's good-to-bad game ratio was probably the best ever. And they were better than most PS2 games, by far.
it was such a PLAYABLE console. I LOVE THE DREAMCAST.

I have a dreamcast, and I don't think the library is that impressive.
Many of the games were simply ported (though only after the downfall, though some were ported anyways) and if you take count of the games and the genre, you will not exceed the PS2.
The PS2 not only plays so many years worth of its own games, but its PS1 games as well if you even include that.
I don't think there is any factual basis that Dreamcast has as bigger library.
Though I will say your "ratio of good to bad games" is possibly, even probably correct from the numerous reviews and stats I've read.

I didn's say that the DC has a bigger library. If someone else did... well, then they're wrong.
I would discount the PS backwards compataility when looking at the PS2, it's more of a marketing thing than something I would consider when giving a general opinion of a console and the games released specifically for it. Just as I would ignore the fact that Bleemcast! can play PS games on a DC. Not that this wouldn't influence my purchase - if it was a choice between a backwards compatible PS2 and a DC, at the same price - well, PS2 all the way, but that's not the point.
I would generally judge a console by the quality of its games. And, in my view, the DC simply has better games. Particulary RPGs - maybe this is why I liked it so much, but it has classics such as Grandia 2, Skies of Arcadia, and Shenmue, 1 and 2. Granted, there aren't a lot, but compare this to the tat we have on PS2 - the only half-decent RPGs so far released (at least in Europe) were FFX (and that's only just scraping it) and Wild ARMs 3. The few other RPGs I've seen were total rubbish such as BG : Dark Alliance, a 'console user friendly' version of BG. i.e, they dumbed it down. Things seem to be changing - slowly, and the new BoF looks okay (I don't even know if we're getting XenoSaga here), but when you consider the volume of games for the PS2, and compare it with those for the DC, that's pretty shoddy.
Other games I find worth of mention are: MDK2, Rayman 2, Sonic Adeventure 1 & 2, Legacy of Kain (this was a rehash, but a great game so =P) Virtua Tennis (for a sports sim this was really addictive) Quake III Arena (online fun. runs surprisingly well on 56K) Power Stone 2, UT, Sega GT, Mr. Driller, Chu Chu Rocket (free), House of the Dead, Typing of the Dead (XD) Ecco the Dolphin (Ecco's always bloody absorbing) RE: Code Veronica, Samba de Amigo (excellent), Crazy Taxi (excellent), Jet Grind/Set Radio (excellent). And of course, the original Soul Calibur, for a long time the only console you could play it on.
I would find most of those games to be of exceptional quality.
Now compare this to the generic, poorly thought out dross we more often than not get for the PS2. - Primal - DNA (Dark Native , uh, something, oh we just want an acronym to be cool) The continually re-released FIFA INSERT YEAR bullshit, EA games, It's In the Game, fuck off! (This is true of all consoles, of couse - I just hate EA ;)). I've already made my point concerning RPGs. FPS, it's half-decent, more or less the same as the DC. Nothing much original, excluding Eye Toy, which, though innovative, isn't nearly as great as games like Samba de Amigo - yet, at any rate.
I'm not saying the PS2 is a bad console, it's great, and when it's good, it really does shine. But its ratio of good to awful games is unacceptable, and the relative quality of these goos games just pales in comparison to the quality, and (relative) quantity of DC ones - particularly when you take its somewhat small library into account.
When choosing the best console, it's innovation and quality which count for me. And that's why I'd choose DC. It really makes you realise how much crap there is on other consoles. And if you don't think its library is that impressive, then you clearly haven't been playing the right games.
It's okay though. I still love all you other consoles just as much.

Gamecube. I got the most games for it, so it would be my most logical choice :B Plus it has SCII, Zelda, MK:DD (which is only fun when playing together... not just alone)
^^;
Ps2 is winning posistion though in my list; cause of FFX :B and soon to come... but not soon enough FFX-2.

I'm X-Box all the way, I love the Big box and Microsoft, and the console itself has wonderful games and titles in its Library. Sure it doesn't have FF games on it, but so what?? lol, most of the new FF games are crap anyways, I like the old school ones on the nes, snes and PSOne.
