Are there any SFX? I ask because there was an isolated score on the DVD that was not-so-isolated and only missed the commentary.

You seem to be wrong. This edition partially comes from the isolated score - not from the DVD, but Bluray. There are no sfx in it. I added three samples from unreleased cues for you.

Ah, thank you! Seems I have been out of the loop on this one. Well, then, thank you again, because this is one of my all-time favourites.

Is it me, or are isolated scores "coming back" a little bit nowadays? They seemed quite big in the first few years of DVD, then basically disappeared, and now... :D

I don't think they did. The last isolated score I heard from was Jackman's X-Men First Class and that was quite a while ago. I haven't heard of any isolated scores from blockbuster movies since then that are coming this year.

There have been a number of Bluray's over the passed couple years with isolated scores, rom films, to even some TV show (though rare).

Some people think it would hurt sales of future CD release, but those of us who know better know it would not, for the most part.

There are a number of film scores which drop enire cues (which would only then be heard on a limited edition), fade out or completely remove parts of cues.
Edit parts of cues into other ones and move then around the film.
Or even "film versions".

A DVD isolated score for such a film offers a unique edit for a score fan.

A limited edition offers the whole score (depending on the label, or what tapes are left) with alternates, un-used score, even sometimes demo cues, with notes and mastering from fellow score lovers who take better care for the sound and the mix.

Well, off the top of my head, I could add the complete scores for both Battlestar Galactica movies and Caprica, although I'm not entirely sure about the last one. My theory is that they finally have the space for such "minor" extras as an isolated score. Remember the Extended Editions for the Lord of the Rings movies? If I remember correctly, they were originally planning to put isolated scores on the DVDs, but eventually scrapped that due to disk space limitations. I'm kinda glad it went the way it did; otherwise, we wouldn't have gotten the nifty Complete Recordings sets.

Fenton re-used themes he composed for "The Blue Planet" (2001). I added some info about this in the initial post.
