30 bucks ?...

Amanda

The cost of just one of the THREE bottles of insulin I need to, you know, live. On disablility. Then of course the other 2 or 300 for meds I need but don't really get every month. You know, broke. As in no, no 30 dollars right now. I encourage the buying of albums, of course i do. Many benefits to actually having the disc. But fact is I can't.

And I am sorry, I don't mean disrespect, or to be snarky. It is just that some of us can't get everything. I get one or two albums in about 6 months. But I can't get more than that. But, selfishly, I want to hear the music. And honestly, 99% of what i have dl'ed the last year, I have deleted. I am glad I did not buy them. (mostly the new releases).

This debate always ends badly. So. I am just saying for me personally, right now, it is not an option. :/

Sorry Babydoll, I didn't mean to argue on a specific, personal and obviously delicate matter.

I just wanted to make a distinction between labels who remaster things and labels who re-work everything from ashes (finding the music sheets, re-recording an entire score, etc.) when I posted "support this awesome label" [even if this former distinction is not an excuse per se]

I was so upset the other day about the Cowboys issue. Can you imagine : a long oop album and it's still impossible to get the expanded version because the "V" problem. And meanwhile the Ebay vultures...

Babydoll, I do apologize if you think my "30 bucks ?" post was somehow sort of an offense...

Amanda

I agree, if you like this music, buy it and support the re-recordings. If this isn't your thing you might enjoy the re-recordings of Taras Bulba or The Fall of the Roman Empire instead. Different strokes for different folks so buy the Tadlow/Prometheus albums you enjoy and support this Re-recording company.

Of course if you are a fan of Bernard Herrmann instead you can always check out the Tribute release of The Battle of Neverta coming out next week. The damage is already done; Tadlow are jacking it in after these because they just don't sell. As much as I hate Fitzpatrick's business ethic, the guy is sinking his OWN MONEY into these things. Love can only stretch so far. This is the end of the era of re-recordings, and it's in no small part due to mindless posts like this.

Happy Christmas to you too. Reported to moderators.

Robert Jordan: The abject mastering failure on the Conan The Barbarian set. He instituted no quality control, refused to acknowledge the problem even when presented with proof, hid behind that ignorant tosser Ford Thaxton who proceeded to viciously abuse anybody who heard the problem (ie, his customers - the people who keep him in business) and told barefaced lies to cover up the gargantuan foul up.

Contrast with other labels; when an issue is discovered, however small, it is immediately acknowledged and addressed - and most importantly, those who have paid good money for the product are looked after. Look at the one tenth of a second distortion on Intrada's Space Camp that resulted in a full recall and repress - or Silva Screen's repress and offer of a free replacement following the discovery of a mastering error on last year's Doctor Who series 5 disc.

That's more or less the problem. :)

Did he do something bad or wrong ? What's his business ethic ?

James Fitzpatrick is a great guy, it's just that since he left Silva Screen 10 years ago or so and started Tadlow he has run his business with his heart instead of keeping it a strictly business endeavour.

He has invested a ton of his own money into Tadlow to keep it afloat, and none of Tadlow's releases have made back their production costs.

Perhaps their last two releases Taras Bulba, Fall Of The Roman Empire fared a bit better and here's to hoping that Conan sells well.

I think they'll do well... but not well enough. Tadlow has never made money from re-recordings - Fitzpatrick's main line of business is as orchestral contractor for the City of Prague Philharmonic.

I have great respect for him in that respect; he takes money from the profitable side of his business (the production line music factory) and invests it in projects that are guaranteed to make a loss, just because the music is great and because he wants to preserve it.

I can't fathom why he had the attitude he did over the Conan issues; one would have thought a man who essentially paid for the project out of his own bank account would be slavishly dedicated to a quality product... That he would ignore the issue, stand back and let Thaxton rip new assholes for the people who did nothing but point out the truth - that I cannot abide.

I have heard that if you shout loud enough, Fitzpatrick will send you a NEW MASTERING which is better - not perfect, but an improvement. This proves that he knows there is a problem but will not publically acknowledge it. Not cool, not cool at all.

... And another proof he knew it and reckoned it is in this second set: the dynamic is better preserved, and it seems there's no distortion/clipping issues this time.

Also, I completely agree with your point about the selling matter.

Sad. And you have no doubt those downloads killed the re-recording business? I guessed the enthusiasts buy it without the care if it's shared elsewhere. Look how many stated from time to time here in this forum to download a score as a sneak preview that is already ordered. Nevertheless it looks bad if a score is shared on a forum and they don't sell enough to keep the business running.

Now all Conan scores can be heard with bigger orchestras.
To my surprise someone told me recently that he dislike the new recordings and stick to the original stuff. Matter of taste ... but ... WTF. LOL

tangotreats
12-26-2011, 02:54 AM
I don't think downloads killed the re-recording business. But the re-recording business has always been on a knife edge, simply because film scores are a very niche market and production costs are shockingly high. Unless you're re-recording music that has mass appeal and will sell a billion copies, you are going to lose money.

With shrinking interest in film music, a shrinking music market in general, the imminent death of the CD as a mainstream music distribution format, increased production costs, and yes, free and fast downloads... well, re-recordings are doomed. Absolutely dead. It's simple economics. From a strictly business perspective, they have been obsolete for probably something like twenty years - but Tadlow and a handful of others are keeping the pilot light on with a mixture of love, blind faith, self-financing, and robbing-Peter-to-pay-Paul-style financing initiatives. That can only last so long.

These Conan discs are among the last major projects that we will ever see - I might go as far as to say they are the last major projects we'll ever see. We'll get two or three more from Stromberg and Morgan, and that will be well and truly that.

I'm only following that thread because I'm amazed of all the "noise" that goes with these recordings...

There's nothing worth of interest to be reminded for the century here, IMO. Would it be a big concert tour, that would be something else ! ;)

... About these re-recordings, at the time they released the first Fitzpatrick shouted everywhere that the Conan score wasn't reaching Poledouris expectations who was disappointed with it. He first caught a lot of attention saying this (and more having Poledouris familly "in his pocket"). I didn't quite understand at that time so much the original recording is full of emotion and power (even if the masters used for the releases sound a bit old !) - and I didn't understand more comparing with the Prague re-recording wich advantage remains only in a bigger orchestra.

But - one year later, when it comes to release the 2nd Conan re-recording, Fitzpatrick revealed (for those like me who don't know all the thoughts of a composer) that Poledouris's disappointement concerned "The Destroyer" 's score ... and not "The Barbarian" !!! ... It's easy to observe how he successfuly washed the brain of a lot of folks since his first statement now.

Something is striking besides when you listen this 2nd opus: just listen to all music tracked from "The Barbarian" for this one, and you'll see it matches much more to what we have on the original "Barbarian" score !!! ie: orchestration, playing/tempos. That shows all the liberty they took for the first Conan re-recording, while going finally back to the original for the same music on this 2nd release.

I don't have anything against creative efforts to attempt something different, I'm just shocked and disappointed of all the sales pitch from the beginning to lead this Conan operation.

In the end, I think that for that 2nd score (wich is quite music for kids, exactly like the film was let's admit :D) any body who likes it wins at having this re-recording, the original being quite awful. But for the first Conan I'm not even waiting for a any ensemble that could grab that magic of sobriety that has been able in 1982 to go straight to the essential: the music itself - with comparatively so humble means.

- Someone said here that that's a "matter of taste". Well, it could be first a matter of love.

Anyone know what's up with the "Sword and Sorcery: The Adventures of Conan" tracks?

Nevermind, it is Poledouris'. Info:

LIMITED EDITION OF 3000 UNITS A return to the days of High Adventure! Basil Poledouris provides the music for THE ADVENTURES OF CONAN – SWORD AND SORCERY SPECTACULAR. Pleased with the success of CONAN THE BARBARIAN, Universal Studios teamed up with Landmark Entertainment Group to produce a live-action stage show for the Universal Studios theme park that would capture the danger and excitement of the Hyborean Age and bring it to a modern day audience. Basil Poledouris, who also scored CONAN THE BARBARIAN, was hired to write the music for the show, which would last close to twenty minutes and called for wall-to-wall scoring. Performed by the London Philharmonic, Basil’s music for the show functions as a symphonic suite. Produced by Super Tracks Music, this special release contains two tracks. The first track is the entire symphonic suite to THE ADVENTURES OF CONAN. The second track is an excerpt from the show, including music, sound effects and narration. This release has been long anticipated by fans of the music for Basil Poledouris and his music for CONAN THE BARBARIAN.

Now, does anyone have a rip of the original recording (http://www.amazon.com/Adventures-Conan-Sword-Sorcery-Spectacular/dp/B000E1Z49C)?

From my many playthroughs of this, I vastly prefer the original recording. There's something special about the separate Horn of Dagoth track (my favorite from Destroyer). More foreboding, more magical. It invokes the feeling of there being a stone god/monster more than this recording.

But the re-recording of Adventures of Conan is amazing (probably as it is the first time I heard it). So good, I added it into Skyrim.

HELLPPP!!
Am I going crazy or is the track 13 "Door Lift - Dragon's Head - Conan The Destroyer" completely f'ed up?
I just got my copy yesterday and I listened to the said track, during Dragon's Head at 04'20'' either the PITCH SHIFTS one half step down or someone handed the orchestra members a transcription which at 4'20'' transposes without any warning one HALF TONE below, probably to bridge between Dragon's Head and Conan the Destroyer.
I find this totally unacceptable and unprofessional.

I spent the night listening closely and I felt upset the orchestra played as if the members were half asleep, except in two or three pieces.
The Prague philharmonic and Nic Raine execute most of the score in a very flat way, a score in which the pieces have had their tempo REVISED poorly, the music re-arranged supposedly the "closest possible" to Poledouris' notes, but this is only a marketing trick.
Not only does the piece "Dragon's head" brutally shift a half tone at 4'20'' (see my first post), but in the piece "Farewell Valeria" , at 1'04" SOMETHING IS WRONG, the notes do not follow the sheet music, ONCE AGAIN THE MUSIC IS REWRITTEN AND POORLY ADAPTED because the part repeats itself doing
G, A, G, A, G, F, Eflat
when it should go instead :
G, A, A, Bflat, G ,F, E flat , which is what we hear in the movie

"True to Poledouris' notes" my you know what! In the booklet, it clearly states :
"NEW SCORE AND PARTS PREPARATION BY TONY MYKULKA" Which means what it means, the score has been rewritten and adapted.

So I end up with a re-recording that is very uninspired in it's execution and rewritten by a newbie for unknown reasons.
I'll pay more attention to other pieces in the rerecording to see if similar goofs occured.

The only moron I see here is you. Just STFU and go kiss the feet of your idol, Nic Raine, if you're so fond of him and his team of incompetent jerks.
Instead of making fun of me, wimpel the troll, simply listen to the pieces I criticized to see what I was talking about, then come back to say what you think of those precise parts.
If not, simply remain silent .

I'm sorry I'm not as anal about it as you are, clearly you have no life. The CtD re-recording is solid in all departments and a huge improvement over the badly played OST.

Y'all do realize that just trading insults will get no one anywhere at all, right? He is convinced the Prometheus edition is the most reprehensible thing ever. You are not, and neither will change the other's mind. This is just going on way to long...

Badly played ...by the ROME ORCHESTRA? Go back to school man.

"solid in all departments", such as a score rearranged by someone who doesn't understand anything and doesn't respect anything from the original orchestrations...
"Solid" in it's lack of vibrato? In it's slow pace which never was meant by Poledouris? Stop blabbering about things you've never checked and go watch on video Poledouris' live performances of the OST in the past. It's never too late.

The Prague performance is only half decent in some departments, but clearly there was a big problem since the beginning of this project, especially in the rewriting of the sheet music and the choice of orchestra/conductor.

Go and try calling some random person in the street "moron" and guess what will happen to that pimply face of yours.
