Okay. We've got the best ever video game villain thread located on this page somewhere, but nothing about who are the best heroes. So I'll ask the question now: Who do you think is the greatest hero in video gaming history.

It's tough to narrow it down, so I'll list the few I admire:

Solid Snake (from Metal Gear.)

Let's face it. He's tough. He's cool. He's got one of those voices that speaks menace when he talks. He can sneak, he can shoot, he can blow up tanks and helicopters by himself. I thoroughly enjoyed being Solid Snake in Metal Gear, Metal Gear Solid, and Metal Gear Solid 2.

Sonic the Hedgehog (from Sonic the Hedgehog...)

... Yeah.

Seriously, when I was a kid, I loved Sonic. He was fast. He was cool. He had his own cartoon. He was the man. Uh, hedgehog.

Crono (from Chrono Trigger.)

Yes, Crono ruled. He was tough, he did cool music, his heart was always in the right place, and he never said a word. Best way for a hero to be. The rock in the party that is immovable no matter what is thrown at him.

Tokiko
08-09-2003, 10:45 PM
Guybrush Threepwood (from Monkey Island)
He has everything a hero needs: a girlfriend (who is cooler, richer, and more popular than him), an arch enemy (whom he's utterly scared of) and the loveable incompetence that makes him the best hero ever to walk a computer screen. He has got no talents except for the one of survival, which is also bitterly needed. Yes, he shows us what a true hero is: someone who finds his way out of the problems his idiocy has gotten him into.

Cate Archer (No One Lives Forever)
A Swinging Sixties Skirty Scottish Super Spy, with more weapons and gadgets than that new... female terminator thing in that... new terminator film which was... crap basicly.
Cate is the most classy and entertaining Video Game character ever, kicking the H.A.R.M. organisation to next tuesday and still having enough tact to make 'Bond-esque' quips at the end of the day.
Sex-ah, Suave, and Surprisingly Original.

(I think my head's gonna blow with all the Alliteration :D )

Runner up:
Max Payne (Max Payne)
The Best Action Hero in a Game to use Bullet Time, seeing as Enter the Matrix was... crap basicly.
Also, after seeing the Screenies from the new game does anyone else think that the older Max looks looks like Richard 'Yes, I killed them, but it was in self defence' Hillman from Coronation Street?

Max Payne.

Richard Hillman.

Best Video game hero........

Mine would be Lara Croft[B] from the tomb raider series.
Why? cause she pulls off absolutely fabulous stunts and kicks ass with that Inventory of guns. Absolutely fabulous

Next Runner up would be[B]Konoke from Oni. Another Kickass babe. Pulls off impressive combos that leaves you gasping for more.

There would be quite a few :

MegaMan : I mean, he's the character that appeared in the most games in videogame history. Yeah, more than Mario or Sonic. He's blue, and he's just and he blows up everything to pieces. What else do you want ?

Sonic : Reasons already mentionned by BZ.

Mario : The pionneer mascot of gaming. Need anymore explanations ?

Viewtiful Joe : lol Not quite as renowned but just play the game. You'll understand. He rocks.

Any Final Fantasy character you can relate to. That all depends on your own personnality.

Ryu (Street Fighter) : A character and game that spawned many clones.

There must be others but that's already quite a few.

The dude from Prince of Persia: Sands of Time. Just the way he can manuver from object and object is cool enough. :D

Yeah it has to be Dave, he has everything needed for a hero, and more. Theres only one other that could beat him and thats Gray Fox (aka Frank Jaeger), though not totally a hero, the parts where he is a hero he totally is the best, plus he is a martyr.

I think the clear answer here is the Excitebike dude. Because I mean, no matter how many times he wipes out, he just gets back up again and keeps racing! That's what being a hero is all about!

Kunio can't die. If he falls thousands of feet into a pit, he just heads back to the most recent mall that he's visited for some shopping. Plus, he excels at multiple sports and not just the weak "X-treme" sort like motocross.

MegaMan : I mean, he's the character that appeared in the most games in videogame history. Yeah, more than Mario or Sonic. He's blue, and he's just and he blows up everything to pieces. What else do you want ?

Nah. I think the person that stars in the most games is "whoever the hell is the star of all of those damn Medabot games." Probably some sort of Medabot. Mega doesn't even star in all of the megaman games either. There's "X" and "Exe" and whatnot. And he's sucked since the NES/excluding Dash(legends).

Tokiko
12-27-2003, 08:22 AM
Does that mean I have to defend Guybrush now? He can be killed, but it's hard, that means you have to be really dumb or evil-minded to actually get him to die. I haven't checked out the fourth game but in the first one you can drown him.

I succeeded in doing so.

Kunio can so totally die. Returning to places after dying doesn't count--it just means you're starting over before you died.

And this Monkey Island fellow, well, maybe it's hard for him to die, but he still can die. I mean it's proof that he's mortal, that's all I'm saying.

Excitebike dude wins.

I have no idea why I latched onto the Excitebike guy because I don't even like Excitebike. But he is a real true hero. I'm sure of it.

Look. X and .exe are simply different MegaMans. Heck, the MegaMan in Legends isn't Rock ( MegaMan's real name ) either. Like the different Links of the different Zeldas. So that counts. And he doesn't have to star to be in it. He just has to appear in it. He doesn't star in the MegaMan Zero series and yet MegaMan X is in both of them. And , YES, MegaMan is the video game character that appeared in the most games. Around 30 or something. I unfortunately can't "factly" prove it but you can trust me, I've seen it on countless websites and game infos. I know this isn't great proof but I swear it's true. Just look around. And count the games some form of MegaMan has appeared.

And besides, the X series is far better than the classic series. X and Zero are just cool.

Yeah, he can be destroyed. But then he can be repaired, right TK ? ;) lol MegaMan is immortal.

12-27-2003, 07:33 PM
Oh, I see. I thought you were talking about the character "mega man", not the "megaman and the other various people that star in the megaman series" as the "best video game hero". Kunio starred in over 20 games and he actually starred in all of them. He didn't try and take credit for a double dragon game just because the DDs appeared in his. He didn't let his new futuristic copy star in a game and then try to take credit for that. He isn't a silly spotlight whore like megaman must be since megaman wants to take credit for everyone else's work!

NES mega man 2+3 > Megaman x series.

But seriously, I don't think that when people say that Megaman has appeared in the most games that they're including games outside of his franchise. Mario's appeared in quite a bit more games that him as mascot characters tend to do. Much more than 30 anyways -and only a few years ago the number for MM was less than 30. Hell, there were 8 "Mario picrosses". plus side roles like refereeing in tennis, or rocking out with the wrecking crew and battling donkey kong.

And there are 29 medabot games even though the property hasn't even been around 10 years yet. So give it time.

Kunio can so totally die. Returning to places after dying doesn't count--it just means you're starting over before you died.

No he doesn't. He has less money by the time he makes it back to the mall as well as all of the items he bought since being there before. This is proof that time has passed since his supposed death.
or I could say that THE EXCITE BIKE GUY DIES EVERYTIME HE WIPES OUT AND WHEN HE GETS BACK UP ITS BECAUSE HE WAS BROUGHT BACK TO LIFE.

On Sega:

Sonic

He has tons of games, used to have successful cartoons, and is known even by people who do not play games. He is easily the mascot and the coolest cat there.

PlayStation

Lara Croft

Hands down, as bad as you may think the games are (and trust me when I say I think the latest game was disgraceful, you can read my review if you'd like) she has movies, comics, more sequels, sex appeal, style, and just too well known and kick-ass. Though Lara Croft kicks ass, her games of lately do not. I will say that. She is always saving the world, being sexy and successful at doing it too.

Nintendo

Mario??? He doesn't really save anything I know about, and the game is kinda cheesy...but he has been around the longest.

XBox

The game has no real heroes that are memorable...

UPDATE: Your right, Nintendo's hero would have to be link after giving that a second thought.

TK
12-28-2003, 01:56 AM
Mario doesn't save anything? If by "anything," you mean "not Princess Toadstool and the entire mushroom kingdom," then yes, you are correct.

That's not proof that time has passed, it's proof that you have been punished for dying. Besides, even if that happens in one game, he can die in other games. Or at least be knocked out for substantial periods of time, which the Excitebike guy can't. Even if the Excitebike guy does die and then come back to life, he does it immediately so it really makes no difference.

Megaman could be destroyed past the point of repair. Like if every part of him was vaporized, he'd never be repaired. Ever.

Hey Gandalf, the Xbox could claim 1 memorable character. The master commander from Halo, though I only mention his name out of respect for Bungie for bringing us good games like the Myth series and Oni.

Oh yah! I'll like to add a honourable mention to my list of best vidoe game heros and that would be the girl you play in "The longest journey" I can't remember her name but she was way cool to play. Maybe it's because she has a helluva lot of One-liners. One thing for sure, she can't die in the game. NOT EVER!! Guess that makes her a whole lot better then Kunio, Megaman and Mario huh?! LOL!

Anyway...lemme' see.

Mega Man, in each series except EXE 'cause it'z ghey - He's Mega man. He's blue, he's a robot, and he kicks ass. Go Mega Man.

Cloud Strife - 'The arrogant bastard gone good' before the name Squall Lionheart existed. He's tough, he's a badass, and he rules...'nuff said.

Mario - Whether you like it or not, he's the original, and he's had many a job (Doctor, Typing teacher, painter, etc.). He's the one unstopable little bouncy-pouncy Italian guy that does it all.

Link - The ultimate in badass. He can carry loads of weapons, but truthfully, all he needs is sword, his shield, and perhaps his trusty steed..and the ass kicking commenses.

Beat (Jet Grind Radio) - So maybe his heroism isn't necessarily considered legal..he still defended the GG's territory, and showed up the Love Shockers, Poison Jam, Noise Tanks, and the Golden Rhinos...Beat's truly a man..er...kid/teen of rebellion.

Kain and Raziel from the Legacy of Kain series own them all, I'm sorry.

Totally immortal, absolutely impossible to kill (When Kain runs low on health, he flees the battle in bat-form to the previous checkpoint with fully-restored health. And Raziel simply goes to his stomping-grounds, the spectral realm, where he regains his strength by feasting on the hapless souls there and returns to the physical world to do more ass-kicking).

Coolest attacks: I mean, Kain with the Soul Reaver, 'nuff said. Plus his devastating spells like Inspire Hate (Cause all human enemies to target one another until they are all dead) and Flay (rip the skin off of whatever you've targeted) and Blood Gout (instant gibbing of your enemy). His many rage attacks and "limit" style combos.

And then there's Raziel, while he doesn't have all the various attacks Kain has, there's just something about stomping around as a demon-wraith with the Unbound Soul Reaver as his weapon, shifting between the physical and spectral realms at will, and basically just kicking anyone and everyone's ass that gets in his way. Only person to ever defeat Raziel in straight on combat other than Kain was the Hylden Lord, and all he did was shunt Raziel to the Spectral Realm long enough to beat a hasty retreat, the coward!

Yeah, the other characters you've called off were something, I guess. But Link, Cloud, whoever you call off would all shit their pants if they had to face either of these two, kthxbye.

Apart from the ones already mentioned... Solid Snake and Cloud Strife being the most obvious, of course...

Squall - Final Fantasy VIII

Just because of the hair. My hair looks like that. Therefore he is cool.

Ashley Riot - Vagrant Story

Especially and the end. I won't say any more than that :O

Master Chief - Halo

He's big, he's green, and he's not a turtle. He blows aliens away with style, and doesn't even let freaky undead things stop him...and he's got a neural connection to a cool AI chick. MC rocks.

And...the biggest hero of them all...

Actually, I think all of the FF7 crew could hold their breath for about 20 minutes. And that's without the Underwater materia. With it, however, and they could stay under indefinitely (in theory, depending on how long you hold out against Emerald Weapon before killing it or being owned).

Oh, btw, Raziel could go anywhere, including Hell itself, without sustaining damage from the environment. Again, Kain and Raziel > all.

Heh, I have to agree with you Azderiel Bane. Guybrush Threepwood is a great hero. Compared against the same villain, Le Chuck.

But, at the moment, my Best Video Game Hero (Well HEROES, as I've got three of them, all from the same game as a matter of fact) awards go to the following.

Zhang Liao (Dynasty Warriors 3 and 4) - Carries a coll looking weapon called the Blue Wyvern, has awesome attacks and a strong sense of justice.

Zhen Ji (Dynasty Warriors 3 and 4) - She's a babe! Carries a mean flute, Dark Moon Flute, and her Musou attack kicks, especially if you have the Way of Musou item and her Musou bar maxed out.

and finally,

My new namesake, Xiahou Dun (Dynasty Warriors 3 and 4) - Carries a big damn sword and wields it effciently. Lost his right eye to a arrow, but he pulled the arrow out and ate the eye, saying "Cao Cao will bring light to this world, for that, I'll give him one eye!" Afterwards killed a lot of enemies.

But also, an honourable mention must go to Ash, from Evil Dead : A fistful of boomstick. Sarcastic quips and comments, a chainsaw (as well as other attachments) a boomstick (remington 12 gauge shotgun) as well as other weapons and he's a hero.

Guybrush is a master of Survival. He's faced countless ghosts, cannibals, zombies, pirates, zombie-pirates and random other threats. He's the kind of hero who survives anything. Call it lucky. I doubt Raziel, who sounds to be some sort of undead anyway, and Guybrush is good against the undead) could hurt him.

Raziel also has a similar dossier of enemies that he has defeated, and with his telekinetic attacks (Ether Shackles), the Soul Reaver, and the fact that he devours the souls of his opponents, I think Guybrush would go to the grave easily (Or, rather, to fuel the Elder God when Raziel consumes him).

Forgot to add two of the best heroes of all time...

Freelance Police.

They are the true heroes in videogaming history.

I heard that new game got canceled (Sam and Max)

The nameless guy from Doom is the greatest hero from this side of Phobos. :(

I'd say Samus Aran from Metroid because she saves humanity and others from the metroids, space pirates, mother brain and the phazon threat (all very powerful). Her suit's cool too and also the fact that though she's a bounty hunter, she does more heroic stuff than hunting bounties.

Frog (Chrono Trigger): He is honorable and modest considering he's a knight. He is a true hero though he swears vengeance on Magus for killing Sir Cyrus (another cool hero). Later in the game Frog (in other words you) get the option of having a final battle with Magus and if you say no that makes Frog an even better hero instead of some person wanting revenge. He's also a great swordsman and talks like one does in the Middle Ages, making him sound more heroic (in the old sense).

For Link, I find it more enjoyable to play as him cos he never speaks, so you can think of something for him to say in its place (one advantage of main heroes that don't speak).

Guybrush cos of his ability to defeat powerful villains (ie LeChuck) without using a gun or sword or weapon of sorts.

Gordon Freeman? Silent dude that never complains about the ridiculous scenario GMan dumps him in and stuff but saves the human race in the end anyway. It's like he's just dragged into the problems others create but still saves the day, making a good role model for a hero (except that using a crowbar to kill combine/marines isn't good role modeling).

Leo Stenbuck from Zone of the Enders: pilots a sought after mecha by accident and uses it to defeat the baddies, though he refuses to kill anyone showing good moral.

Sorry for the long explanations.
