Very cool thanks for this, Does anyone know of a upload/link of the isolated score track from the 20th anniversary premiere at the shrine auditorium that is on the 20th anniversary dvd?
I was at that premiere in 2002 it was soo cool watching the movie and hearing john williams conduct the orchestra live durring that screening.
It was very cool they included it on the dvd for the 20th anniversary release.

Thanks a lot!
"First Kiss" and above all, "E.T. is Dying - film version" are reel treasures. The last one is not just a variation from the album version, it's a new darker composition. Beautiful!

Thank you very much for this.
Quick question, hopefully you all dont kill me but what is an Isolated Score?
darkknight1978
12-20-2011, 10:12 AM
It's when the music is placed on a separate track/channel on a Laser Disc/DVD/Blu-Ray. It's typically referred to on a movie's special features as an "Isolated Score".
phbart
12-20-2011, 06:10 PM
Yes.
I think it's worth mentioning that Laserdiscs contains only one track of 2-channel digital audio and one track of 2-channel analog audio, and features such as audio commentary, isolated musical score (and so on) are recorded on the analog channels, so this is not a digital rip. Although the quality is good, we aren't getting the full potential of an actual digital mastering...
Can anyone who has downloaded this please post the tracklist?

Thanks for linking to it phbart. Having seen this mentioned on FSM I've been very curious to hear it. So this at last, beyond a proper CD release, is the definitive version of E.T.
Thank the maker this got a Laser disc with Isolated score release!

I tried ripping it today and even though it says isolated score it has the 20th anniversary performance mixed in with the sound effects and it's nearly impossible to get a clean rip.

What does this have that the original & remastered 20th Anniversary Edition does not have? I thought the remastered re-release had everything.
And exactly what is a LD? There's CD's, DVD's, Blu Ray's.......what's next lol?

No it was missing a few short tracks and the film versions are a bit different in places from the album version. LD is a laserdisc, DVD's predecessor. It was popular throughout the 80's-90's and died out in the late 90's-early 00's (may have been dead before then).

LD=LaserDisc. Previous from DVD, expensive big discs (LP size). The definition was limited compared to DVD. But some amazing editions were made for this format.
Obsolet today.
What you get here compared to the previous editions are mostly two track you can't miss. The short "First Kiss" track and the "E.T. is dying, film version", entirely different from the piece previously edited on CD with the same name.
The rest has mostly a different mix.

According to Wikipedia, the Laserdisc format, although superior than VHS and other home video formats of that time, was never popular, reaching at best 2% of the US households. But it did dictated how future home video formats should be. Enthusiasts claims it was superior than DVD, and some even go as far as claiming it's better than Blu-ray. I completly disagree, however we have to praise the fact that if it weren't for this format, we woudn't get gems like this one shared here...

I've dug out my 3-Disc 2002 DVD set (I'd completely overlooked this at the time) and ripped the track in question. Like codyap09 said, the track unfortunately includes the movie's SFX on all channels, as well as the audience reactions (I did a quickie cleanup mp3 version without the centre (dialogue, etc) channel, if anyone wants it I'll upload that too).
Here it is anyway:

I also ripped the accompanying featurette from the Bonus disc, along with another JW featurette:

Do you mean VCD, with the really low resolution video and even lower quality audio? Can't forget SVCD either.

Nope, these were pre-VHS discs! Basically the size of an LP/LD but incased in a hard plastic shell that loaded the disc into the player (without actually ever seeing it). As far as I can recall the quality of sight and sound was pretty good. But again, I watched these things as a child. A child who wasn't reviewing the picture and sound quality of a film with anality! But merely watching a film to be entertained.

The player -
You would load the disc by basically shoving it in, then quickly pulling it out (the player would basically "grab" the actual disc that was contained inside the plastic casing). When one side was done, you'd shove the casing into the player again, wait a second, then pull it out, flip it over, and load it again, to play side 2.
Basically it was the "vinyl" LP of video. And, like what was happening in the music industry, cassettes and CDs became the popular formats.
A laserdisc with a dual-sided DVD for size comparison purposes, in its player -

Personally, I always liked laserdiscs, and really appreciated discs that came in CAV format (as opposed to the more standard CLV format) especially, since you could freeze-frame and get a perfect still image (couldn't do that with video tape). Also, some discs had features you simply could not find anywhere else. The Criterion Collection laserdisc of Francis Ford Coppola's Bram Stoker's Dracula (
http://www.horrordvds.com/viewarticle.php?articleid=195) is still an exceptional disc production, and it's such a shame that it was never fully ported to DVD or Blu-Ray.

Very nice. Very curious to hear those 2 tracks that were mentioned.
I actually own a couple Selectavision videodiscs myself, though I never actually had a player - I just bought them at a local shop for the artwork. They are actually vinyl records inside that play with an actual needle. I'd love to know how these would have looked back in the day.
