N. Richard Nash’s 1954 dramatic play, THE RAINMAKER, was adapted by the author himself for the 1963 musical version, 110 IN THE SHADE, which featured a superb song score by Harvey Schmidt & Tom Jones. The earlier play was also adapted by Nash for the excellent 1956 Paramount film version starring Katherine Hepburn & Burt Lancaster. An interesting fact is that Joseph Anthony directed the original play, the film and 110 in the Shade. The film featured a magically appropriate Academy Award nominated musical score by Alex North, which separated from the film makes for a wonderful listen, especially since one can hear echoes of Harvey Schmidt’s music for the later musical adaptation. RCA released an LP of Alex North’s score for THE RAINMAKER which went quickly out of print and has never been reissued in the US in any format. A poor sounding CD of the LP master was released by RCA Spain in the 1990s but was also quickly withdrawn. This newly remastered file of the score is assembled differently from the RCA soundtrack album and was mastered from a 50+ year old inch acetate reel tape. It appears to be from the RCA album master source since the infamous “orthophonic” curve was present which I have tried to minimize as much as possible. THE RAINMAKER is not only one of Alex North’s finest film scores; it is arguably one of the best film scores ever written for any picture and presents an interesting comparison and favourable companion to Harvey Schmidt’s music for 110 in the Shade. I hope you enjoy it.
