Do you wish they would bring back Airships in the Final Fantasy series? The last one we got was in 9… I don’t know about you but I LOVED getting 3/4 of the way through the game and then getting my airship that i can cruise around anywhere with. It really put a bad taste in my mouth for the series when they stopped adding them in.

Unfortunately, the loss of a controllable airship in the series was a casualty of changing game design – with the move over to 3D environments from FFX and beyond the explorable world map was abandoned in favour of linked zones, and that also meant the loss of a controllable airship. At least in FFX, XI and XII airships can be explored internally, even though you can’t pilot them yourself (most are either just choosing a destination from a list and then instantly appearing there, or riding an airship that flies on a set route, such as in FFXI).

But yeah, I too would love to see a new FF game with an airship to fly myself again – there was just a real sense of freedom and accomplishment in the earlier games getting to that point in the game where you gain your wings and make the world pretty much your oyster. 😀

Blame FF7, and I hate to admit it – FF:TSW, and the turn of SQ to SE.

When a company realizes they can milk a particular aspect of, well, anything, stuff gets streamlined.

Airships were a ‘gift’ to players in the early days to say – ‘hey, you’ve been playing this game for like 30+hours, have something to speed you around the world better’.
But, now, with advanced graphics taking over story, characters, and fun game play, Square-ENIX has removed many things they felt were ‘too old school’.

Remember FF13?
Yeah, it started to get ‘decent’/’good’ after 10+hours of game play —-> what the fucking fail was that?

SE
I am disapointed
