I live in Australia and in our distant PAL territory, FFXI has only been released for the PC. I have been holding out for the PS2 version as my computer is not capable of running the game. I was just wondering if any of my fellow PAL residents (or any of you friendly american folk) could tell me if there will in fact be a ps2 copy in my region. Should I stick to my guns and wait for Squeenix, or just upgrade my computer and purchase the PC game (if i should have enough money)?

Unfortunately, you’ll be waiting a very long time, as Sony has phased out production of the PS2 hard drive, which the PS2 version of FFXI requires. Meaning once the US and Japanese PS2 versions of FFXI are sold out, it will no longer be available, and sealing the chances of ever seeing a PAL release, at least for the forseeable future.

Apparently Square is examining other options for the PS2 version of FFXI, but at the moment at least, only the PC version will be available in Australia (which is the version I’m playing on).

Really, you’ll have to upgrade your PC if you want to play FFXI that badly (I got a brand-new Sempron 1.6 ghz ‘bare-bones’ system with 256 megs of RAM, 80 gig HDD and on-board video/sound for only $400 AU (although I spent an extra $50 on a G4 MX 440 video card for it as well), and it runs FFXI on it very well, even with 56k dial-up. So, a new PC to run FFXI shouldn’t burn too much of a hole in your wallet.

Don’t hold your breath for a PS2 version of FFXI in PAL areas. Honestly, FFXI, even with a pretty bad computer, is better on the PC, things are so much clearer compared to the television screen.

Oh darn… I appreciate Squeenix’s games and all, don’t get me wrong, but I always feel we PAL gamers get short-changed. What with the shoddy conversions and delays. Well I guess Japan IS a ntsc country after all and they have no obligation to cater for other regions but it would be nice considering that European gamers have funded their operations substantially over the years (perhaps not to the extent of Japan or America, but substantially nonetheless).

We never even got Final Fantasy Tactics! I wanna play that game 🙁 Too bad I’m financially challenged.

But thanks a lot for the info people. I think I shall just have to save my pennies and get the PC version after all. 🙂
