When I was in college and this was first released on LP, it received constant airplay on the local classical station. It remains THE FINEST recording of its kind. If you like your Christmas haunting; the dark chapel lit by torches and sputtering candles; braziers waving incense into the cold air; the echo of voices chanting in procession; and Chaucer readings, 10th century Saxon readings, 14th century English readings along with a couple of ancient prophecies; this is for you.

I thought I already had this album, but after a diligent search, I’ve come up dry…

Medieval, Baroque, Gregorian Chant – All are nice when applied to Christmas music 🙂

This recording came out in the mid-1970s… when most of you were not walking the planet. As already mentioned, it was repeatedly played on the Chicago Classical FM station at the time. I have only heard it it played once in recent years, which is a pity. Because it is THE Christmas recording. Others have tried to better it, including the Boston Camerata’s exploration into other Christmas time periods. Nothing has ever come close to this. After wearing out LP after Lp I was overjoyed when it appeared on CD- though it did not have the extensive liner notes included with the LP. Oh well. It is the music that counts- and how this takes you back in time and place.
