Anyone playing the new Star Ocean game?

I know it’s not technically new, but at the same time, it’s also very new…I’m enjoying it very much…I was hoping someone else was. I’ve just finished a dungeon involving slimes that teleport you if you touch them (to avoid naming it), and I have Ilia, Roddick, Joshua, and Cyuss in my party.

Anyone else enjoying this new game? Star Ocean: The First Departure, I mean.

Oh, that looks great. I dont have a psp though, but the original Star Ocean is still on my to play list cause I haven’t played it yet.. I hope you have fun with it!

They put Star Ocean 1 in Star Ocean: The Second Story style, so that people playing Star Ocean 1 can go straight into Star Ocean 2 easily. X3 It’s…a gorgeous game. I felt like I was going to run into Rena or Precis (but not Claude, he’s too eww) at any moment. The landscapes, music, and sprites are just so similar–in fact, a lot of sprites in Star Ocean: First Departure I’ve seen once before in Star Ocean: The Second Story.

But since you’ve played it. I just have to say this to someone. >>; Cyuss. ♥

I was going to buy it, but I ended up getting the super rare Valkryie Profile: Lenneth instead. Its also made by the same crew: Tri-Ace!

I don’t blame you, Mr. Flame. Any sophisticated lady, such as myself, would be able to tell you that purchasing an older item is more important than purchasing a newer item; Star Ocean will be available for a while. I’m not fond of Valkyrie Profile myself (as in, I’m not very good at it), but I do love having it in my PSP RPG collection (alongside Star Ocean, Jeanne d’Arc, and Popolocrois–a small collection indeed).

It’s been awhile since something made me laugh that suddenly.

Anyway, I’d love to play SO just as soon as I get a PSP. Which is to say never. :/

This is one of those games that makes me wish I had a PSP 🙁

Unfortunately I don’t have a PSP, but I have played the original via translated rom and had a good time with it. I didn’t get super far because my attention span has reverted back to that of a 5 year old, but I definitely need to pick it up again.

I almost bought a PSP for the re-release of this game, Star Ocean 2, and Valkyrie Profile, but I realized that I’d played all of them extensively and couldn’t justify the purchase. Not yet at least. DS is holding up for now and anticipating the release of the new Valkyrie Profile game 😡

I’m the complete opposite. I missed out on this, Star Ocean (well, it was released only in Japan), and Star Ocean: The Second Story. Well, I have Star Ocean 2, but the disk is scratched, so I’ve never been able to finish it. So I bought a PSP just for games like the ones you mentioned.

I play my DS and my PSP the most~. A true lady is never caught without her handhelds~!

oh thats cool, i didnt know they made it like SO2. I dont have a PSP, so I guess I didnt look into it hard enough. I have SO2 for the PSX, it is a awesome game. back to Treasure of the Rudras!

Yes, yes it is. I was never able to finish Star Ocean: The Second Story because my second disk was too scratched. I bought it used. I’m looking forward to finishing the game for a change when the PSP remake comes out in January.

Yeah. I’m just about to visit the Pugatorium. I have Ilia, Roddick, and Cyuss. Missed one of the guys and Phia. D: It’s a good game.

Eee, I’m almost done with my second playthrough, Ngrplz. I read your name as "Nogrlplz" and that made me laugh. Anywho, which characters have you recruited? 8D I’m a huge fan of Ilia, Cyuss, Mavelle, and Welch.

I only have Cyuss Ilia and Roddick at the moment and am upto the Pirate Cove.

Second playthrough? Is this a short game?

RevSQ; You can’t recruit Ashlay if you recruit Cyuss. If you want Phia in your party, say no to Ioshua! If you want Mavelle in your party (and both are great party members, IMO), say yes to Ioshua.

It’s like this.
Recruit Cyuss: Can’t recruit Ashlay, can’t recruit Erys
Recruit Ashlay: Can’t have recruited Cyuss, you can choose to add Mavelle
Recruit Phia (early on–bad idea): Don’t recruit Cyuss and Ashlay
Recruit Ioshua: Recruit Mavelle automatically
Recruit Mavelle, Ioshua, and Ashlay: Can recruit Erys

Now…there are still more! These don’t cancel out anything.
Pericci: Grab her ocarina; can be recruited if there are 7 or less characters in your party
Welch: Can be recruited if there are 7 or less characters in your party
Phia (Later in the game–comes with something good, better idea): Can be recruited if there are six or less party members in your party
T’nique: Can be recruited if there are six or less members in your party

Ilia, Ronyx, and Millie always join. For example…my playthroughs were like this.

1. Said yes to Cyuss, Said yes to Ioshua, Mavelle joined automatically, Said yes to Welch
2. Said yes to Cyuss, said no to Ioshua, Mavelle did not join, recruited Phia late in the game, Recruited T’nique, Recruited Pericci

To get Erys, you must have Ashlay, Ioshua, and Mavelle.

(This list has been basically made after I tried so many things and talked to a lot of people–I’m positive it’s accurate)

It’s how Star Ocean is done. If it doesn’t appeal to you, don’t play the series. I don’t play certain games for reasons like that, too, Mr. Bassist. 🙂 Doesn’t bother me, though.

I love the Star Ocean series for its excellent replay value (especially SO2).

And I hate Star Ocean for its excessively long intros. PLS LET ME OUT OF ARLIA FOR GODS SAKE.

Arlia is so horrible. I had a friend who bought Star Ocean 2 and tried to do a Rena and Claude playthrough at the same time. He…never made it past getting Celine.

Mr. Bassist, sorry for offending you. I was trying to say we all have our little turn-offs that will stop us from playing a certain series. I don’t play RPGs where you get a game over if the player character dies, but the rest of the party is still alive. I just don’t–it’s a gameplay decision I’m extremely annoyed with.

I’m playing Star Ocean 4: The Last Hope whenever it comes out, but I don’t have a good reason to play the old ones like 1 and 2 since 4 is supposed to be a prequal.
