out of morbid curiosity, how exactly do they identify these accounts?

To be honest, even I don’t know.

The only real thing they have going for SE is if the user were to exchange large amounts of gil at one time (which is stored in the log) and if the user was found cheating in the game (by using a speed hack by making them run faster or botting).

Otherwise… they really have nothing going for them and for all we know, there were just scapegoats.

I don’t know either, but people paying USD for video game currency really makes me lol

Quite simple, SE has the power to monitor the in-game currency (gil) that comes and goes from your character, when they see a millions of gil suddenly appear in your inventory without having sold anything on the AH they start to wonder. And in the case of the gil sellers themselves, well, wouldn’t you find 6 people with identical names that are always in the same place at the same time doing the same thing a bit sketchy? It’s not that hard to find people cheating the game.
