The first soundtrack on DG. The catalyst for this extravagance is Lang Lang, the young star pianist whose playing features throughout Tan Dun’s score. On the opening track, he shares the theme song with the young Chinese singer Jane Liang Ying Zhang. This presents an unfortunate juxtaposition, with Lang’s commensurate artistry pointing up Zhang’s vocal limitations as she croons her way through the song. The tune itself, though hardly original, adapts well enough to various treatments as the composer demonstrates in the track Desire, where the tune is picked out, staccato-style on the strings against a running accompaniment, and in Lady in Red where, like a spectre at the feast, it’s heard in a wordless melodic line with a zither plucking away below.

By way of contrast, the prevailing soft-focus mood is broken up with passages for piano and percussion, vividly recorded, with echoes of Stravinsky in his neo-classical vein. Dun saves his bonne bouche for the final reprise of the theme song, a fine peroration where he adds solo voice, percussion, string and a miniature trumpet figure to build an exciting and affirmative conclusion to this lavish retelling of the Hamlet story.
