The Inaugural Concert for the European Year in Music took place at the Teatro Real hall in Madrid on January 21, 1985, the programme consisting in four pieces by four leading Spanish composers from the so-called Generation of 51. These were Carmelo Bernaola (1929-2002), Toms Marco (1942, the kid brother of the Generation), Luis de Pablo (1930) and Cristbal Halffter (1930), the latter from the prolific Halffter saga.
Bernaola is represented by his Second Symphony, which I have already uploaded in another, more recent version. Toms Marcos piece is the second of his choral concertos, the earlier one being for violin, this one for piano, with the late Humberto Quagliata taking on the solo part. All pieces are of a then-recent vintage, except for the Halffter, his Cantata of Human Rights, which premiered at the UN headquarters in 1968. Using words by Norman Corwin, it contains (as far as I can make out) aleatoric elements.

Of the four composers represented here, three have been film composers. Halffter created a lot of scores for the films of Rafale Gil in the 1950s; Luis de Pablo, apart from the early 1960s monster movie The Sound of Horror, was involved in much of Carlos Saura’s early work; and Bernaola scored numerous comedies, dramas and horror films (including Horror Rises from the Tomb, presented here by me).

The pieces are distributed into two CDs:

CD 1
– Carmelo Bernaola Symphony No. 2 (1980)
– Toms Marco Sacred Space (Choral Concerto No. 2)
Piano: Humberto Quagliata

CD 2
– Luis de Pablo Adagio (1983)
– Cristbal Halffter Yes, Speak Out, Yes (Human Rights Cantata) (1968)
Catherine Gayer (soprano)
Michael Rippon (baritone)

Madrid Symphony Orchestra Arbs Orchestra
National Chorus of Spain
Conductor: Cristbal Halffter

I believe I have sent links to everyone on this thread so far. I just want to say that those of you who enjoyed the Bernaola symphony can find the very same piece in the following thread, in another performance with better sound:

Thread 233014

I am surprised that as many people as the above have been interested in this. I thought I’d get one demand at most. Maybe it had to do with the HORROR RISES post.
