After the War of Secession (1861-1865) the disenchanted Lieutenant John J. Dunbar heads to a distant border post that has been abandoned by the soldiers. His loneliness impels him to come into contact with the Sioux Indians; this is how he meets "Standing with a fist" she was raised by his natural family, then after the loss of her parents, she was adopted by the tribe as a child. Little by little, between Dunbar and "Standing with a fist" there is a loving relationship and this brings Dunbar closer to the Sioux, between them a relationship of respect and mutual admiration is established.
