THE WIZARD OF OZ (1939) 80th ANNIVERSARY FILM VERSION 32O

The film version of The Wizard Of Oz has never been released but all the pieces to create a film version are available. This years marks the 80th Anniversary of the classic film and the last time we had a release of the score was from rhino records in the mid 90’s and even that two disc still had some takes missing that were used in the film and some dialogue from the film in two tracks. I used the isolated music and effects track as reference to put together this film version using the 2 disc rhino release along with the audio vault material that was included with all the DVD and blu ray releases that have the recording sessions with material that wasn’t released. Now it’s all pieced together as heard in the film.

Excited to give this a listen. I’m not sure if you know but there’s several hours of material on the Bluray and DVD, called the Wizard of Oz jukebox I believe, that has the Munchkinland sequences minus vocals in some places with the vocals being on a separate track. I tried reconstructing the entire sequence using that but it’s really difficult. Just a head’s up. Edit: it sounds like you did that but the timing is off in places. The vocals sometimes get ahead of the music.

Just listening now, it’s sad that the mono version of Cyclone will be the only way to hear that cue minus SFX. That’s not the only thing it’s missing either, it’s missing an entire channel. The only way to hear the film version with the missing channel intact is through the music and effects track which not only features SFX but is also SHORTENED.

Kudos for the work! This project isn’t an easy one and some gripes aside, it’s an enjoyable listen. My advice though is to definitely go back and work on Munchkinland some more to fix the timing issues and consider changing takes on some of the vocal parts. It’s an uneven listening experience. If I had access to the resources I did I’d gladly send my version but even if I did, I have no time to work on it so it could take a while.

Here’s hoping for Gone with the Wind soon! That movie is also turning 80! It’s tricky too as there’s no isolated music and effects track to work with.
