WHAT IS THIS?

There can and should be so much more written about From Software’s tremendously underrated first person dungeon crawler series King’s Field, but this is not the place. Suffice to say they live in the shadow of Dark Souls and deserve to be better known.

Tsukasa Saitoh would go on to composing for Demon’s Souls (keen ears will hear clavichord samples used here in KF4 also used in Demon’s Souls themes such as Old Hero), but it can be argued that this right here is his masterpiece. This collection of music is simply totally unique, a quietly unnerving combination of soft folksy pieces, strings, synth pads, drums, tribal vibes, orchestral pieces that completely suits the tone of the game. Decrepid tombs, tunnels, dilapidated shacks in dangerous forest groves. Malignant caves and dank dungeons. And this music is perfectly suited to such adventures. And one of the most emotionally-charged staff roll themes ever made, fact!

Remastered with my usual techniques. In-game tracks were rendered using original PS2 game music data files, these use a sample-based playback similar but far more capable than the SNES. The samples are likely 8-bit and are quite noisy so some songs have noisy sections that are difficult to "fix" without impacting the music in an undesirable way. The introduction was taken from a movie file from the game. The final two tracks "Damp Tomb" and "Cut Song" are taken from a rare promotional music CD entitled the "King’s Field IV Special Music Disc". More information here: https://vgmdb.net/album/12745

As the PS2 makes use of higher than CD-quality audio, this remaster is provided in 24-bit 48kHz format (FLAC only). If you have trouble playing it, try a different audio player.
