Departing from the turn-based, rock/paper/scissors mechanics of the preceding Fate/Extra games, The Umbral Star steers the Fate series into a whole new direction: A Musou game. The player assumes the role of a custom made Master who can assume control over 16 Servants with vastly different playstyles. They must defend their kingdoms, known as "Territories" in game, from an invasion of malignant alien forces, and even other Servants. Each Servant can be upgraded with various skills and, once a meter is filled, have the ability to unleash their powerful Noble Phantasm. Outside of combat, interestingly enough, Extella has visual novel elements that explores that backstories of the main cast, which hearkens back to the Fate series’ roots.
