I listen to a lot besides VGM, but you mentioned Skyrim for instance; Jeremy Soule is my 23rd most played artist, with Skyrim and then Guild Wars 2 being the most frequent soundtracks I put on by him. Vast majority of these plays have been between late August and December, so basically it’s fall music for me, and this jives with a lot of non‐vgm I play that time of year (Summoning and Obsequiae come to mind). Stuff with a kind of misty, kind of fantasy feel to it seems to define my fall playlists.
I listen to chiptune stuff more in the late spring and summer.
uh
Stuff like is it raining, is it snowing, is it oppressively hot, all have a lot of relevance, but I’m drawing a blank when it comes to soundtracks specifically.
But like Lnasa, Irish folk on the refined end of the spectrum (highly skilled instrumental stuff vs tavern songs if that makes sense), almost all of my plays of them come between June and August and specifically when I’m driving, especially through rural areas. Probably music I associate with getting out of the suburban swelter and into the cooler countryside‐‐green and lively summer scenes without the need for distraction from the heat. Vs. at home in the summer is the only time I listen to a decent chunk of death metal. Maybe more abrasive stuff that helps me accept that it’s 90 degrees in my house and there’s nothing I can do about it.
I’m just rambling because I just woke up and haven’t had any coffee yet haha. But yeah, if I went down the line of climate/season factors I think I would find artists that I uniquely prefer in each setting.
Personally, I like to listen to the score for Halo 3: ODST on days when there’s a pretty good chance of rain in the local forecast.
…I’m serious! It’s practically instinct! At the very first sign of rain (darkening clouds, a flash of lightning, the rumble of thunder or that first whiff of rain on the breeze) I start up the music and let the Northwest Sinfonia (under David Sabee’s skilled baton) carry me back to the rain-slicked, war-torn streets of New Mombasa on that fateful night of October 20, 2552. …Marty & Mike really hit it out of the park on this one.
Sunny to partly cloudy days, on the other hand, call for a Sonic the Hedgehog OST marathon (in no particular order: 1, CD, 2, 3 & Knuckles, Mania – speaking of which, hope to have my hands on a copy of Sonic Mania Plus by this time next week).
Not sure if anyone else here has done this, but… Every week of May the 4th (or whenever it suits me), I treat myself to a STAR WARS soundtrack marathon (in near-perfect chronological order – both Story Group and Legends):
The Phantom Menace (Ultimate Edition)
Attack of the Clones (Clone Attack Edition)
Republic Commando
The Clone Wars (Film Score + TV Soundtrack)
Revenge of the Sith (Sith’s Revenge Edition)
Solo
Rebels
The Force Unleashed 1 & 2
Rogue One
A New Hope
Rogue Squadron
The Empire Strikes Back
Ewoks
Shadows of the Empire
The Freemaker Adventures (thanks, CGCJ!)
Return of the Jedi
