In my search of rare treats for all of you, I found this soundtrack for an obscure OAV titled "Sequence" released in 1992. I don’t know much about the plot of this OAV, except that involves romance, sci-fi and a lot of pop songs with 80s stylings.

Anyway, what drew me to this soundtrack was the name of his music composer: Toshiyuki Watanabe. Anyone who has listened some of his works knows what are his strengths and characteristics as a music composer, he knows his way in front of an orchestra. This soundtrack belongs to the earlier part of this music career, so I wouldn’t say that this album occupies a prominent place in his discography, it’s more of a humble effort.

In this case, the score evokes a feeling of gentle warmth, in consonance with the OAV story. Some strings, harp, piano and woodwinds, that’s all what Toshiyuki Watanabe needs to establish the mood of the album, where the cues rarely deviate from slow tempos and flowing melodic lines. Forget dramatic gestures, when this soundtrack explores darker territories the cues are too short to go anywhere or only offer vague feelings of uncertainty. As you’ll see, this soundtrack is pretty fine in depicting a romantic atmosphere, special mention to the flute writing, but regretfully there is very little beyond that.

Although I don’t care too much for the 5 vocal songs included in the album, that are standard anime fare to my ears and don’t add anything to the score, I guess they have their reason to be, mainly for commercial purposes.

Try and Enjoy!

Good find. In case anyone wonders, this anime was not subbed in English but a high quality rip was released by Renascent last year.
