Description:
Sometime earlier this year around May, I was scrolling through posts on Twitter when I came across an announcement that completely surprised me, something that I’ve been hoping for since 2011 or so. Japanese record label Three Shells announced a four disc set titled Akira Ifukube: Nikkatsu Film Music Complete Works (3SCD-0032). The set was to include music from all fourteen films that Akira Ifukube scored for Nikkatsu, Japan’s oldest film studio.
Originally limited to two hundred copies and retailing for nearly $100 USD, the set quickly sold out well ahead of its release date of May 31, 2017 (that date also happened to be the composer’s 103rd birthday). Luckily, Three Shells manufactured another two hundred copies, which gave people another chance to obtain this amazing set. I was lucky enough to get a copy as an early birthday present back in September.
Out of fourteen films, only master tapes to six films have survived. To present music from the remaining eight films, Three Shells went through the films’ optical tracks and lifted segments of music that had as little dialogue and sound effects as possible. Most of the music in this set was previously unreleased. Only selected cues from most of these films were released in the past. The complete scores to five films (featured on discs 1 – 3), plus all surviving cues from "The Burmese Harp" (disc 3) are presented here for the first time.
Collection 1 (Disc 1) features the overseas score to "The Maid’s Child" (1955), recorded in 1958 (tracks 1 – 17). Supplementing this are selections from the original version of the film, lifted from the film’s optical track (tracks 18 – 22). The second score on this disc is "Scoundrels of the Sea" (1957) (tracks 23 – 35).
Collection 2 (Disc 2) features the scores to "Tear Down Those Walls" (1959) (tracks 1 – 19) and "Teikoku Bank Incident: Prisoner on Death Row" (1964) (tracks 20 – 51).
Collection 3 (Disc 3) features the score to "Japanese Archipelago" (1965) (tracks 1 – 26) and all surviving cues from "The Burmese Harp" (1956) (tracks 27 – 44). Supplementing the surviving cues from "The Burmese Harp" are additional selections lifted from the film’s optical track (tracks 45 – 52).
Collection 4 (Disc 4) features selections from eight films, all from the films’ optical tracks. The films are "Muddy Youth" (1954) (tracks 1 – 8), "Women of Ginza (1955) (tracks 9 – 12), "Three Faces" (1955) (tracks 13 – 18), "Police Diary Part 2" (1955) (tracks 19 – 23), "Silver Suicide" (1956) (tracks 24 – 27), "The Crime of Shiro Kamisaka" (1956) (tracks 28 – 33), "Wandering Shore" (1956) (tracks 34 – 38) and "Who is the Killer" (1957) (tracks 39 – 42).
Akira Ifukube’s scores for Nikkatsu are some of his finest film works, from the heartwarming score to "The Maid’s Child", the Jazz-like score to "Scoundrels of the Sea", to the emotional score to "The Burmese Harp". Thanks to the efforts of Three Shells, all of this music is forever preserved for all to enjoy.
Track List:
UPDATE (01/08/19): I have revised the track list, and the updated English track list PDF is included with the new download links (see below).
Due to the unique formatting needed (I created the track list to replicate the booklet’s track list), I am unable to provide the proper track list for this post. To present the track list here, I had to leave out certain details such as composer and lyric credits for most tracks. Even omitting things like that, I’m still unable to properly format some of the tracks. The proper track lists (Japanese and English translated), presented as intended, are included with the link in PDF format.
For the complete track lists as originally created to replicate as it’s presented in the booklet, I made a few changes. I corrected the composer and lyric credit for tracks 15 -17 on disc 1. I also added quotes to most song credits that were missing in the booklet’s track list. There are also some minor changes that I won’t mention. Also, there are some additional errors in the booklet’s track list that I chose not to correct.
First is disc 1, track 2. Instead of M-2, it should be:
M-2 青森県民謡「おらのぼんぼこ(寝させ唄)」in the Japanese track list, and
M-2 Aomori Prefecture Folk Song "I am Disappointed (Lullaby)" in the English track list.
Second is disc 3, track 22. Instead of M-23-1, it should be:
M-23-1 ロシア民謡「ドゥビノシュカ」(「仕事の歌」)in the Japanese track list, and
M-23-1 Russian Folk Song "Dubinushka" ("Work Song") in the English track list.
Lastly, the tracks’ file names are identical to the English track list presented with this post.

Akira Ifukube music is one of the best original ever to come out of Japan and the world. Such a gifted composer.

Yeah, the set is actually in a DVD-style case. As the photo of my copy shows:
Your custom cover is quite neat! However, you accidentally used the Daiei logo, and one of the films is from 1965. LOL! Still, not bad.
Ah, it’s a DVD!
Cheers,
TB
Yep, you got it. For decades, it was an encircled K. However, it went through a vast number of variations over those years. It even looked like the Toho logo for a while.
Yeah, it was interesting to see CDs in a DVD case. Three Shells did the same thing when they released their eight CD set, Michiaki Watanabe: Nikkatsu Film Music Complete Works (3SCD-0029).
I’ve seen quite a few such as "Death by Hanging" (1968).
That one I’ve seen. I believe it was based on the novel by Kobo Abe. Same era as Woman in the Dunes and Face of Another, both great Hiroshi Teshigahara films.
They are great!

You’ll have to make a few more posts before you can send and receive private messages. I’ll be happy to send you a link once you’re able to.
Oh…I’m just not very chatty….
I understand.
The forums require users to gain a certain number of posts (5 posts) before they can have access to the PM function.

Indeed you are!
So how many is that? I think I’m almost there…

I just can’t think of anything to say. I give up!

While I’m not sure what score it was from (possibly Suruga y???ky???den?), I can pretty easily describe the cue because it contained several motifs from his other scores, specifically: the first few bars of "Ending" from Baluchaung Project, "Retaliation of the Mysterians," and the Heisei MechaGodzilla theme.
I would be extremely grateful if you could help me find or even just identify this cue. 🙂

It’s my thread, so I don’t have a problem. You guessed correctly. It’s Great Fight (DB31I), from "Suruga Yukyoden" (1964).
Awesome! Any chance you could point me in the direction of a download link?
I’m not sure if one is out there or not. I used to have it once upon a time, but I don’t think I do anymore. I’ll check to be sure.
Either way, thanks for your help.

To those who requested the link, I’m so sorry for the long delay. I’ve had a lot going on within the past couple of months, and I didn’t see your requests until today. No worries, as the link has been sent to all!
It looks like I sent it to you back in 2017. That’s okay though, as I recently made new rips and revised the track list. Anyway, the link has been sent!

Yes, but I had some hard disk problems a year ago and I lost a lot of files. That’s why I’m asking for it and the other Ifukube Concert again. Anyway, link received and rep added. Thanks !!
Oh no! I’m sorry to hear that! I thought you had a good reason for asking the link again. You’re welcome, I’m glad to help you out.
